Part of me wishes she couldve stayed as sweet and innocent like this the entire movie, but then i realize the reason this movie is so amazing is because its perfect just the way it is
I believe Esther really was heartbroken to learn about what happened to Jessica and she was sincere when she told Kate “she would have been lucky, you’re a great mommy”. As Isabelle Fuhrman said in an interview, deep down all Esther wants is to be part of a family. However, she’s still a sociopath and will use whatever means necessary to hurt whoever gets in her way.
I think it was the most honest human moment from Esther in the entire film. She was fake all the time from the very beginning but something hit differently in this scene.
That’s easier said than done; don’t forget that Esther/Leena was a 33-year old woman trapped in the body of 9-10 year old girl. She may have had the body of a child, but she had adult feelings and desires, coupled with whatever other issues she had from her traumatic childhood. Even if she had grown up normally, she’d still probably be somewhat angry, bitter, and maladjusted (though maybe not quite to the extent she was in the movie), because she would still want to experience love (both familial and sexual), along with the rest of the things that come with being an adult. And while she could pretend to be a child in order to get familial love, that would only work for so long; remember, she has an adult mindset, so she wouldn’t be able to tolerate being treated like a child for long. But because she has a child’s body (and I’m guessing her condition is completely untreatable since it’s so rare), those desires will largely go unfulfilled, leaving her stuck in her rut, frustrated, angry, and heartbroken. Basically, Esther’s only hope of salvation would be a brain transplant into the body of a 33-year old adult woman; after which she could get treatment for her issues, and then properly pursue her desires. But since those Transplants are decades away, she’s stuck as a kid. I’m not saying it’s impossible for her to have a normal life; just EXTREMELY difficult, with a Capital E.
I agree, agizzy23. True, Esther/Leena was a psychopathic, remorseless home-wrecking killer, but even killers have moments when they feel emotions such as sympathy, or even empathy for those around them or their victims. In this case, Esther genuinely felt upset by Kate’s story and for her unborn child, because both Esther and the child were denied the chance at a true life. Esther because of her medical condition, and the baby because of the miscarriage. Thus, Esther truly felt sorry for both her foster mother and the baby, because all three of them had been denied something they had wanted so dearly. Later on though, her rage at supposedly being ignored destroyed what little sympathy she still had for her foster mother, and.......you know the rest.
The fact that Esther knew she would be found out (I mean, people are gonna get suspicious if she doesn't grow at all) means that she knew she was going to get rid of Daniel and Kate the whole time, and yet she and Kate had a such a nice scene together makes it extra heartbreaking.
Anybody else notice that Esther was fake crying until Kate hugged her? As soon as she was out of sight she just became straight face again. This film is amazing
@Emma albino have u watched the movie? or read about the original script? because thats actually true. Thats what fucked her up. She could not find true love because of her condition. She did not age...
@@camm3217 yeah i know, but i think that she was going crazy because of her condition and the thought of never finding a man who will love her. who knows, maybe she wasn't heartless before!
@Bia L It's a movie? I'm not saying that what she did was right in any way. She is a psycho and i know that. I just thought that Esther really felt bad for Kate losing her baby. That is just a conspiracy i would like to believe in. It's my thoughts and i'm just sharing them.
When Ester was crying l felt bad but then thought she s a crazy perdón iron Man Batman suicide squad Spiderman Tony Stark Robin Marvel capitán América 2 Harley Quinn the Avengers Thor Hulk mujer malilla
That scene reminds me of the time where my friends saw my picture portrait in my room of my friend who passed away when she was 15 and asked me who was that in the picture then I told them who she was and I told them I have a dead friend they patted my shoulder and said they were sorry to hear that 😢
i believe Esther was faking because in the orphan script i read she Hated jessica her entire plan was to get rid of kate and the son so she could be with jhon and max Esther's not really 'evil' she just wanted to proove her father wrong that she could find love im sure if Esther didnt have that disease she wouldnt of gone through all of this trouble i wish i could help her reason with her in anyway :(
Well esther is more of a tragic character then just a psychopathic killer her motives were to only find love but her father told her she will always be this way and no one would ever want her because who would wanna have sex with a child?
@Arikm7 esther was a victim of prostitution and human trafficking in the script her father fell into the arms of another woman and she killed them both and resorted to prostitution and she would act as a child so older man could sleep with her she even murdered some of her clients she was very twisted in the head
i never held you, but i feel you, you never spoke, but i hear you, i never knew you, but i love you. such a touching memory for baby Jessica. just beautiful, yet heartwarming. 💔
I'm reminded of Claudia's words, the little vampire child from Interview with the vampire: "...And it means something else too, doesn't it? I shall never ever grow up." Esther can never have the life of an adult, and just as Claudia, will remain locked in her eternally young prison. An unbearable fate, and it makes me understand the broken and psychopathic nature of Esther more clearly.
I loved Esther in this scene but later when she tried to kill Daniel in the hospital or when she killed John I was shocked. I though how could I like her? Then I recognized that she was playing the sweet girl xD
why did they have to make this poor sweet child into the villain. Why couldn't they make this movie about empathy and anti-bullying? Why must every mainstream movie contain horror genre.
Isabelle is your name? Is that right? Hwel, i loved orphan, who did you doo that? Its soooooo cool, and In the film, your name is Esther? Right? I loved the film best of aaaaal the films
