Chris, I discovered Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, and John Hartford on the same day. The day I watched the DVD of Down From The Mountain, the concert for the film Oh Brother Where Art Thou. That day turned this old Deadhead's gaze in a whole new direction. It has been a great ride. There is so much music in my life that I can trace to that moment.
I was in college in Madison, Wi when Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball came out in 1995. I was listening to a lot of Christian Music at the time and the stuff that was coming out of Christian Music Industry had gotten so bad that I started looking for inspiration outside of that industry. Thank God for Emmylou Harris and T-Bone Burnett for showcasing and introducing artists like Gillian/David, Patty Griffin, Julie/Buddy Miller, Innocence Mission. I cannot imagine my 20s without that music.
