These two are the BEST duo alive. They make my soul sing and soar.

I can't not cry thru this song... one brother gone many years, my mom, dad and stepfather and soon enough we will all be gone.

I keep coming back to this tune because it's deceptively simple and so easy to miss its brilliance. You have to listen to the counterpoint Dave's guitar plays to Gillian's vocal, and the harmonies they use as well as the metre. Just brilliant, as are many of their songs.

When Gillian sings, you can hear God.

I heard over the Rhine perform this 20 years ago and it made me cry and this song is still just as powerful today

[James Dylan Dean, my real artistic name] It was only months ago when I first discovered this country duo on RU-vid. I was immediately entranced by them as being everything that I wanted to be with music, only not as two people. hehehehehehe Just a little about myself. I am in my seventies now, and cannot remember when I was not enthralled by music. At first it was just any music that I heard, but I did settle on folk music for years, like THE BROTHERS FOUR and THE KINGSTON TRIO. Then when I was fifteen, I decided to learn to play the electric bass guitar, which was relatively new at the time. I remember that I wanted to play it from the chord positions, though my tutor wanted me to learn single note runs and rhythms. He said that I was doing great, but I bent the door of my father's prize auto on a date and he made me sell my guitar to par for the repair. I still loved music and enjoyed Brenda Lee and the Beatles when they became popular. My interest widened to many of the famous bands of the time and such performers as Tanya Tucker and the female singer that did NO ONE DOES IT BETTER (my memory blanks out at inopportune times, sometimes) in one of the sexiest musical performances ever. At the age of thirty-five I picked up the guitar again and that began an almost forty year struggle to play like I wanted to. I liked finger picking and drifted to the work of Chet, Doc and Jerry. I did learn a lot of rolls and other finger picking patterns, but just couldn't get the feelings that I wanted. Then about five years ago, I decided to not play as others did, but as I wanted to and I really began to progress then. I don't play enough to become really good, but at least well enough to please myself. I commented on Gillian and Dave's postings, I guess that at one time I caught their attentions and she mistook me for a fellow pro player. You have no idea of how much that meant to me. A couple of months later, I had a series of dreams where they took an interest in me and invited me to come back East and meet them. A result of this was that Dave worked with me to get my abilities significantly improved enough to play with them. And they did an album with me of their favorite songs, including NO ONE KNOWS MY NAME and ORPHAN GIRL. In the glorious exaggerations of the dreams, it was a hit because of a newer and fuller sound with me. The dreams have stopped, but not the total love of their music for me. Sorry, if this is too long or seems gratuitous, Just sharing with fellow admirers of them.

I never used to listen to Gillian Welch. I figured I wouldn't like someone who is so popular. Boy, was I wrong.

I wish my generation would love artists like this more. This is true music made with real instruments. I truly was born in the wrong generation.

Did you know if Gillian ever found and met her birth mother? I was also adopted and searched and found my birth mom, then met her in 2018! She passed in January, 2022, so only got to know her for 4 and a half years, but those were wonderful years! She was wonderful! So, was just curious about Gillian and if she ever met her birth mother.
