This device is used for a patient with a class 3 underbite. The headgear will be worn during the night while the patient is sleeping. The process can start as early as 8 years old.
@@acey6647 correct!! also if you do get on waiting list as an adult they really don’t care you could be waiting up to 5 years and then eventually forget you! what happened to me ):
I hated it, my jaw was hurt so badly each night that I can’t sleep at all, I do regret not wearing it now (I can’t wear it bc i went to another place to live where the dentist is not there) but it was painful just to imagine I got to say
@@Key-xl9py Tbh i think that headgear hurts more bc like braces is temporary pain whereas headgear u go thru constant pain every night bc the headgear is literally being pulled against ur chin, leaving a red rash / bruise. I no longer need to use my headgear and im getting braces tomorrow which im so happy for. Gotta say goodluck, cause headgear hurts so much and for some reason, when it pulled my jaw forwards, it also made my ears hurt too. But if you wear your headgear everydsy, its worth it because I get mine off 3 months early.
@@Key-xl9py i also got a ton of acne because the oils in my chin were trapped underneath the headgear with no air. After a while, my chin also feels numb like I cant feel it at all because of the headgear. Its probs the worst pain ive ever had and im 13 years old.
Watch Orthodontist Dr Bill Hang's Vid, titled "Angle Killing" He said that most underbites/class 3 are NOT caused by a Prognathic Mandible, (Very Rarely the case) and that aswell as the upper jaw being too far back, the lower jaw can also be a bit too far back from where it should be. And that Surgically setting the lower jaw back is often a mistake, As it can make Breathing issues worse. He mentioned an example of a man who had Surgery to set his lower jaw back decades ago, to "fix" his Underbite, but years later ended up needing to have surgery AGAIN, but to bring both upper and lower jaw forward to eliminate his sleep apnea.
That‘s probably different from patient to patient. Sometimes the upper jaw is underdeveloped, that’s when this treatment comes into play. Sometimes the lower jaw is overdeveloped and the orthodontist has to do something else
I had it it bothered the hell out of me couldnt sleep with it nor could just sit still with it on but damn do i regret it now im 19 and i gotta get surgery if i want my underbite jaw fixed
You‘ll have to see an orthodontist to tell you this for sure, because he can take a look at your personal case and determine what is possible. Generally speaking 17 is rather late for these types of treatment, because the growth is mostly done in your facial bones. Therefore surgery most likely will be needed. But I‘m not an orthodontist and this isn‘t medical advice I‘m speaking from my personal experience with my jaw issues and what my orthodontist told me. So seek out a professional in your area for definite answers
Ever heard of "Anterior Segmental Maxillary Distraction?" where only the front part of the upper jaw is surgically cut, then gradually and incrementally distracted forward using a Distractor. (Instead of a full Lefort 1 Osteotomy)
@@someone-lp9veI’m 18,my orthodontist has prescribed it,he’s not sure whether or not it will work, but he said we will apply this to you and follow you up for a month or more,if there is any change,we tell you to continue
Yes it literally hurts a lot and im not exaggerating. In 13 years old and I have a blue headgear. I only wore it for 6 months, although i need to wear it for 9-12 months because i wore my bands. When wearing my headgear, it hurt my jaw so much and my chin. As of right now, im wearing my headgear on and tmr in getting braces. It made my chin feel numb all the time and there was redness and a huge bruise 24/7. I also had a ton of acne on my chin too because of the headgear. Goodluck wearing your headgear, because its gonna hurt a lot. Just wear your bands and you’ll be fine, because you might get it off early.
@@kiwis.kimi2 ITS fine at least you won’t have screws inside of your jaw later cause you’ll need surgery for it. i need an hess. hear. :( i went though 2 orthodontics procedure 2 time braces 1 time expander and i rlly need headgear but nobody offers it :(
Nope iI think 14yrs is the latest. As an adult your jaw is already grown and developed. When you’re young it’s still growing so I guess the headgear slows the lower jaw, while Upper grows.
It depends, I would usually wear it 16 hours a day, so I could be free of it during school time, but it really depends on what your dentist's plan for you is, maybe you only need it 8 hours or less
