The origin of the hymn is assigned to the year 626, when Constantinople, in the reign of Heraclius, was attacked by the Persians and Avars but saved through the intervention of the Most Holy Theotokos. A sudden hurricane dispersed the fleet of the enemy, casting the vessels on the shore near the Great church of the Theotokos at Blachernae, a quarter of Constantinople inside the Golden Horn. The people spent the whole night, says the account, thanking her for the unexpected deliverance.
Τhis Hymn gives thanks to the Virgin Mary, when she miraculously saved Constantinople from an attack by the Avars in 626 AD. when Emperor Heraclius was away with the Army where he was fighting to take back the Holy Cross from the Persians.

The name of this hymn is Ti Epermaho' and is sung to Our Theotokos for protection and sung usually during Easter Lent. It is indeed ancient and goes back to Constantinople and the Eastern Roman Empire.

Impossible not to be moved by the music and the lyrics no matter one speaks no Greek and must read the English translation. This chant has the power to give to any listener hope and strenght and get much needed resiliance in today´s life! Whoever composed this masterpiece was very far-sighted and able to see his work would help people in the course of time!
I am Western however I find this song and music very moving. Moving into tears as a fact.I wonder if both armies from Ukraine and Russia sing this together that the war would stop.

The Theotokos spared Constantinople from the Persians hence the all night Akathist to her . All we Orthodox need to repent more and more so that the grace of god will fill the hearts of those who live in this city and worship again in the Ag Sophia . I fear it fell because of sin and that it remains in heathen hands because of our sin to this day. We must humble ourselves across the world to usher in Gods grace . Καλά Χριστούγεννα !
In thanks for the lifting of the siege and the supposed divine protection of the Virgin Mary, the celebrated Akathist Hymn (The Standing-Up Hymne ) was written by an unknown author, possibly Romanos the melodist, year 626.
I assumed this was a modern composition related to current events, but now I'm really excited to learn that it's actually an ancient composition related to current events. This is so full of beauty and power and I love the Blessed Mother so much that I'm definitely inspired to start learning everything I can about the Orthodox Church.
