Imagine if after the first Balkan war, the League of Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro and Greece had formed a Balkan Union to combine their military strength and economy. Such a polity would have been too much for the turks to hold on to their last remaining parts in Europe freeing Constantinople and Bosporus gradually. It would have been the most powerful European polity in eastern med. A precursor to NATO & EU but combing strengths of all without the violent ethnic divisions that has kept these countries weak individually and prone to external interference. When I see the current demographic trends of all the 6 modern countries of erstwhile Balkan League, maybe such an union would have made more sense now that we can imagine.
I'm not happy that the nations of Europe allowed Byzantium to fall either and I want to see it restored too.
The Byzantine Empire did not have a national anthem. This is an Orthodox hymn rending grace to the Virgin Mary for a victory over the Avars. Now play it at 1,25X speed...
The story goes (I think) that the night before the capture, Constantine XI prayed in Hagia Sophia and then rode his horse slowly through the dark city to take up his position on the great Theodosian walls. I have an image of him on the parapets turning around and looking back one last time across the doomed city. The weight of a thousand years of history must have been absolutely crushing. Then he turned back to face the overwhelming Ottoman forces that he must have known would overrun the defenders and end the Byzantine Empire before the sun set that day. 😭

The Roman Empire was not a nation, it was an empire. Therefore it didn't have a national anthem. There is no such thing as a national anthem for an empire. In fact, back in those years, there was no such thing at all. Speaking for national anthems during the medieval era is pure nonsense.
@@rafexrafexowski4754 It never split into two different empires. It was a co existing rule of two administrative centers of power. One empire ruled by two emperors. Like England, a monarch and a prime minister. Terms like "The Eastern Roman Empire" and "western Roman Empire" is for easier understanding and explanation of both rulers. The Empire still was one, both emperors helped each other and both were roman. once a western Emperor died, the east would take all western territories until a new western emperor was sat on the throne. and the only reason they fought against each other is when a usurper took one a throne without the other emperor's approval.
This is not the anthem of the Byzantine empire, an "anthem of the Byzantine empire" never existed. This is a hymn to Maria, Jesus mother, Panagia Theotokos (The Blessed Virgin Mary) composed and sang all night long, standing up, by the people of Constantinoupolis the night the City (Constantinoupolis) was saved by Her from an invasion of the Avares
