Hi, it was so nice to see that someone took the trouble to mow the grass on the bank of the river and get rid of all the bushes behind you. I learned this casting technique by placing a bucket on the Army parade ground and casting from the edge into the bucket. The way to do it in most rivers is to hold three or five loops in your left hand and cast with your right hand whilst standing in the river waist deep. Get the picture? Cheers mate. Harera

The sink tip lines are great compared to the original full sink lines that were awfully difficult to cast. The color change helps as well. The one thing I don’t like about sink tip lines is any strike is muted vs a floating line. Fishing still water with tiny nymphs for small trout you can barely tell if you get a take.

I find initiating with a roll cast to be the most elegant solution most of the time. Oftentimes if I start with maybe half a rod length of floating line out, either one or two successive roll casts gets the fly airborne and turned over just like I had forward casted a dry after a back cast. And that point usually shoot a little line on a single back cast and then make a final forward cast. It really feels like you’ve warped to a few false casts without ever having to pick line off the water.

This is extremely difficult for musky fishing... With figure 8’s you have to almost be right at the rod tip. I guess your still gonna have to work for it in that aspect, but this is excellent info to quickly punch out some larger bass flies as he stated in this video. Still good to know - thank you 👍

Great info Pete. Your videos have provided me with a lot of useful information I have put to use. I have a question regarding sinking line. What weight (grains) tip would you recommend for a 9’ or 9.5’ seven weight rod for steelhead.
@Detroit3Pistons
@Detroit3Pistons 2 года назад
For maximum efficiency do you want the weighted part of the line inside the rod guides or at the tip of the rod?

How do you not get blades of grass stuck on your fishing line?

When do you to go to a Full sink line rather than Sink tip? Is it determined by depth? distance? Sink rate? or something completely different? Thanks for these videos! You’ve helped me learn tremendous amounts! 🎣

Yes and yes, somewhat challenging question. They make sink tip lines to do almost everything and full sinking lines are much more specific. if you can find it, Kelly Galloup and Bob Linsenman wrote a book called "Modern Streamers for Trophy Trout" does a really great job of explain how and when you use these different lines. In the future, we will make a video that specifically explains this in great detail. Great question, thanks for asking it

@@newflyfisher Thank you for replying! I really appreciate all Orvis’s great products, videos and help! I’ll definitely check out Kelly’s book, I’m subscribed to his channel also. He’s probably the best fly tying instructor on the internet. Wishing everyone at Orvis a safe and happy Thanksgiving week! God bless

Would the Polyleader be the choice w/ a short tippet for articulated streamers ?
@newflyfisher
@newflyfisher 4 года назад
Personally I would just use a heavy piece of mono (10-16 lb strength), 3-4 feet in length to tie to you sink tip for retrieving articulated or any larger streamer. Easier to cast and trout are generally not leader shy when quickly retrieving a streamer like an articulated one.

What's the quickest way too get my fly down 15 ft in river
@newflyfisher
@newflyfisher 3 года назад
Use a quick descent sink-tip that is 15-20 feet in length. a type 5 to 7 would work

Can’t really do that from a boat. This is a skill you should have in the toolbox.
