ORVIS fly casting instructor Peter Kutzer demonstrates how to make a proper bow & arrow cast with a fly rod. This cast is essential when fishing in tight conditions with brush and obstacles all around you. Try the bow and arrow cast and fling a fly right into the openings of a log jam.

*I already own the Battle II combo **enjoyable.fishing** recommend and decided to try a Fierce II combo to carry out to the pier. Works great and for the money they are hard to beat.*

and with that, my mind just blew up. I've been flyfishing for nearly 40 years and it never dawned on me you could do such a thing. This is excellent.

Well, I have gotten a hook in my finger when I first started trying this cast. What I do now is carefully grab the hook by the bend making sure the point of the hook is exposed and not covered by my index finger and thumb or grab the fly by the tail if it has one. I haven’t had a hook in my finger since. All though I think I just jinxed myself. Pete

#1 Mostly when using bow & arrow cast you're in tight quarters so shorter is easier to handle esp with overhanging trees. Softer rod is a bit easier to load for this cast #2 there are a lot of variables in terms of distance with bow & arrow. fly choice, leader length & rod length. Joe Humphreys has 1 of the best bow & arrow casts I’ve ever seen. He has a technique where he holds excess line in his hand and can bow & arrow an impressive distance. For myself the max effective distance is 20-30 ft

I was just trying this last weekend with fly rod. I did this with my spin cast years ago. Great little trick for though hard to cast areas. By the way I wasn't to successful with my fly rod. Oh darn! I have to go fishing to try it again.

Thank you! Just read about this random cast in the new Trout Tips book from TU. Can't wait to try it out on some nice holes I've seen that until now I've been unable to get a decent presentation to. Should also keep me from feeding flies to the foliage.

I've been doing this for years with my spinrods in tight mountain creeks in the woods where casting is impossible to catch brook trout. Never applied it to fly fishing but now I'm going to. Didn't know it had a name I just thought I was being clever, haha

Really enjoyed that video, thanks. In my area, I deal with overhanging branches 70% of the time. In your opinion, what type of fly line would be best suited for this kind of presentation.....floating or weight forward?

definitely didn't work that easily when i tried it last weekend lol I'm going to play around with it more and see what happens

What do you think about inverting the rod so the reel is pointing up and the rod is bending the way it was designed?
@Ebolson1019
@Ebolson1019 7 лет назад
I'm going to guess this works better with longer rods. Don't think I could do this with my 6' 5wt

I know that fly rods are made to be bent and loaded but will continueously doing the bow and arrow cast wear out your rod or do any damage to it??
