ORVIS - Fly Fishing Lessons - Setting The Hook And Fighting Fish

Peter Kutzer of the ORVIS Fly Fishing School in Manchester Vermont is back to help you set the hook and fight your first fish. Peter shows you the differences between fishing for trout and other small fish and when you're stripping a fly for saltwater species or freshwater big game.
The way you set the hook makes a huge difference in your success rate, so knowing the correct motion for a given situation is important. Many a flats angler has been ridiculed by his guide for losing a fish to a "trout set."
Next, he moves on to fish-fighting technique. Although the classic fly-fishing pose involves the rod tip held high above the angler's head, this is actually an inefficient use of the fly rod's power. Instead of fighting a fish off the tip of the rod, you want to bend the butt section. Phil Monahan joins Pete to use the scale on a BogaGrip to demonstrate how much more force you can generate by fighting "off the butt section."

I actually did this spinner fishing once. I was at Meadow Lake in Idaho. Just got stocked a day or two before. I knew I was gonna get a bite, so I was waiting while reeling in. Think I was actually using a fly, too. I felt a bite and set the hook. Hard. Went from horizontal to vertical in fractions of a second. This little four inch rainbow came out of the water and had to hit 30 or 40 feet before bouncing off the tree behind me. Whole family saw it, and I was young enough I didn't need a license. Needless to say, I did not live that down for a long time

Rod position depends on tippet strength. I agree with you when fighting fish with heavy tippet but say five pound pound trout with 5 or 6 x you need to use the soft part of the rod and keep the butt 90 degrees to to fish.

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ru-vid.comUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

I'm probably missing something but I thought the purpose of using the flexible tip portion of the rod was to absorb the force from the fish's fighting so as to not exceed the tensile strength of the line? For instance, if you are generating 1-2 lbs of force using the rod tip and the fish jerks generating another 5 or so lbs, your 6-8 lb line will probably be fine because some of that force will be absorbed by the rod tip bending more and transmitting that bend down the rod, or no?

Doesn’t increasing “pressure on the fish” really mean increasing pressure on the line and the knots? Doesn’t that make it more likely to snap off, lose a fly and lose a fish?

Now I was just wondering, since you apply more pressure when fighting with the butt of the rod, will that break your line if you are using light tackle and are fighting a decent fish? In this case, does that mean if you are using light leaders and tippet that you should fight a decent fish with the tip of the rod? Any help is appreciated, I was just wondering.
@billedwards2657
@billedwards2657 7 лет назад
DKOutdoors this is why it's important to match your lines and tippets to your rod. Lighter tippets? Lighter rod. That's why we have different weights. If you're using 6x tippet you're getting 3lbs max and you'd be right on the edge with the pull displayed here. Obviously you should adjust your technique as well if you're going lighter than that but if you've got a good hook set, solid knots, don't be afraid to muscle a fish a little bit when you have to.

When the fish bites and starts pulling, whether you use trout or strip setting, the line will keeping reeling out.... Guy here says to not fight it and wait for the line to stop automatically... isn’t the spool going to run out of line or if you hold the line it will cut your fingers from the fish pulling and the line going between your fingers and rod?

In my 20 + years of trout guiding experience. I teach the complete opposite of this video. Once you have a fish on keep the tip high (statue of liberty high) let the bend of the rod absorb ALL of the pressure of the fighting fish. Fish are lost because once the tip is dropped and pointed at the fish you’re relying on nothing but the strength of your knot and with a big fish that’s nothing….

thx for the tips I've done that same movement in the past but once or twice a bass has pulled my fly line all the way and now all I had left is the backing line to use and when I got to that I started to fight back like basic fishing like for catfish I still got him but should I do that or should I just let him keep pulling the line then pull back when he relaxes next time I go fishing.

Interesting 🤔 I was taught to avoid setting the hook straight up because the way the hook is angled and you’re not putting so much pressure on the fish. I guess you could set the hook straight up but then switch to the side ?

@CrU5a3R
@CrU5a3R 11 лет назад
pull the fly line out, it can pull out on its own but your drag has to be waaaay down.....so pulling it out will be the best, as you learn to cast out you'll know how much to pull out for different distances.

Hello, thats so far one of the best vids I've seen, and it doesn't only apply to fly fishing, I use the same method (going sideways) when lure fishing, it just seemed natural and I lost way less fish due to becoming unhooked compared to fighting with the tip when fighting fish like that. One thing that remains unclear to me- how do you recognize a take? Do you feel it on the rod, or do you observe the fly line like some lure fisherman when jigging with high-vis braid? (mostly interested in fishing a sinking or moderate lines) Thank you very much :)

Ok so I just got my first fly fish rod and I have two primary questions if someone can please help 1) The line is constantly in free spool so it gets dragged without resistance. If there is a fish on it how do you fight it since they can just take all the line? I see the videos show theres a locking mechanism but I havent figured out how to do that. 2) My reel lever is on the left side and im right handed...how do I switch it? Any advice? Would appreciate any help
@deadlyshark5439

I just started fly fishing too, but I might be able to help a little. 1. Try to see if there is any drag knob on it at all. It will probably be on the opposite side of the reel knob. Also, if you are coming from regular fishing, there is obviously no cast so pulling out line with the drag set is ok. 2. I recommend that you have the retrieve knob on the opposite side of the hand you cast with. That means if you cast with your right, then put it on the left. This is the best way since you have the same hand on the rod at all times and the same one on the line/reel knob. This is good for fly fishing since you probably cast more frequently than normal fishing

Sometimes when Im watching fly fishing videos, the fisherman will fight the fish by stripping only, they dont use the reel at all. Other times they will reel up all the slack and fight the fish with the reel. How do you know when to fight using only stripping or reel up the slack fast and use the reel?
@thibaultjaberg4658
@thibaultjaberg4658 8 лет назад
+jacob lahr I'm no expert but I think sometimes when you have a big fish you'r more confortable fighting it with the reel because then you can walk around without snagging your line. But on the other hand if the fish is coming towards you very quickly you might need to stripp in the line very fast in order to keep the tension on the fish.

you won't do that much fishing light tippets for trout in spring creeks and tailwaters. Not a good tip for beginners because the low rod points the rod tip right at the fish, fish takes off, angler fails to give line, fish breaks off. In the East using 5-7X is common, particularly during late summer and autumn.
