Tightline or "Euro" nymphing is a very effective way to catch trout when fly fishing, and it works when other methods of fly fishing are not effective, like when trout are in deep water and not feeding aggressively. Dave Jensen shows how he utilizes this nymphing method, and explains how a beginner can quickly learn how to catch those trout that seem to be glued to the bottom.

For beginners??? Decades of fly fishing addiction!! First hole with this setup and technique, that nice cut hit me hard!! I don't think I'll be using an indicator for a while😆 Great fish in honor of my Mother on Mothers Day!! Thank you!! Love your videos!!!

I've been (risking heresy) crossing over from my spin and baitcasting roots into drop shotting with both my Tenkara and fly rod...I love the ideas in this video, thank you!

Thanks for posting this video. The trout season opened in my local river in Ireland two days ago,so I've decided to get into nymph fishing.. it's a limestone river, with a meandering river flowing through lush green meadows, woodland and through the quaint town of Ennis.. The insect life here is amazing. And the wild brown trout are plentiful.. Im 45 and been dry and wet fly-fishing since I was 12 and now I'm going to get into nymphs, I'm looking at the orvis Clearwater 2 and 3 weight rod, it's 243 Euro including postage So I'm looking forward to 2021 and my start to nymph fishing. Have a good years fishing where ever ye are 💫💫✨

I've used this technique effectively on heavily fished water where the trout see hundreds of flies daily. Two keys are to keep your dropper length pretty short and also to use a tight knot to secure it to the running line. This will save a lot of fishing time by keeping the dropper from tangling with the main line. A really great technique.

Big Papi By tight knot you mean not a loop or swivel knot where the fly can have action?
@bigpapi3636
@bigpapi3636 5 лет назад
Cachi - Kinda. I was referring to the knot that connects the dropper to the main line. I tie the dropper off with a uni-knot rather than a loop to loop for instance. The rig fishes better if you can get the dropper out at a 90 degree angle to the main line. I've experimented with various knots to the top nymph itself and I don't think it matters. The key is keeping the dropper from constantly tangling up with the main line.

@@bigpapi3636 I usually have my bottom fly (point fly) 18-24 inches below my upper fly. I tie my upper off the tag end of a triple surgeons knot. works great!

Mitchell Engelhardt Hi. So you’re running maybe 12-14” between flies? I typically try to run more like 8-10”. Regardless I get about 80% of the takes on the bottom fly.
@mitchellengelhardt3450
@mitchellengelhardt3450 5 лет назад
@@farmerbob4554 That's pretty close to what it would be. I think it may be a little closer between flies due to the angle you are leading your rig through the water. But I am with you. I get more takes on the bottom fly as well. Tight lines!

Hey Dave, I met a gentleman on the water yesterday who was euro nyphing. he was kind enough to show me is tactics. he was running a long secion of 5x tippet to a few feet of colored line as indictar to another long tippet about 10 ft in legth to wich he had his nymphs rigged in tandum, (a heavy fly on botton and an emerger on top), I was not aware of the distance between point and dropper. have you encountered this set up before? i landed one fish but the control was verry odd at first. Thanks! excuse any spelling errors its late and in heading to bed after this. Cheers

I would stick to your original rig-placing various split shots at the bottom and tying unweighted flies of droppers on the tippet. This allows you to vary the shot size acc to the water flow and depth. Fishing weighted flies that have less movement than unweighted flies is the key.

Great video. Are you suggesting using a perfection loop connection of the 3x leader and 5x tippet? Also, what knot do you recommend to attach the dropper line to the 5x tippet? I really enjoy your videos and am learning a lot! thanks!!

Try using a bloodknot with the leader attachment and leave a long enough tag end to tie off the drop nymph

what about fishing in bc where more than one fly is illegal? is there a way to fish for trout like say on the Cowichan, on the fly with only one? and no indicator...as those aren't allowed either (or weights like split shot)

Could you use a 7 ft 5x leader, tie on a tippet ring, and attach both flies to the ring (one short and one long) to accomplish something similar?

What's the point of casting 25 feet out if you're just gonna strip it back in - aren't you supposed to let it drift? (new fisherman here)
@sterlingspor7851
@sterlingspor7851 3 года назад
Casting upstream your flies immediately begin to come back towards you. You’re stripping in the slack this creates so you can effectively set the hook if you happen to get a take. I’m certain you have learned that by now, maybe this will help others with the same question.

Have fun trying to fish it with an indie if that’s what you’re implying. So let’s say 30 feet of tippet and a whole lot of weight cuz you know it ain’t gonna be vertical. Your flies will be trailing the indie at angle most likely. I guess you could try a drop shot with an indie to really have a chance at ticking bottom. There is no one rig to fish all. It’s all about adapting as you go.
