Osborne House in the Isle of Wight was bought by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert in 1845 as a retreat from court life in London & Windsor. Albert was very much involved in the total redesign of the house and gardens which they had first leased in 1844 from Lady Isabella Blachford.
The Italianate design inspired by Prince Albert came to be imitated in public buildings throughout the British Empire.
The Prince planted many trees in the parkland himself and the gardens and estate eventually covered more than 2,000 acres. The house is full of collections reflecting their shared tastes and many were commissioned as birthday gifts to each other.
Queen Victoria died in Osborne House in 1901 and no other member of the Royal family wanted the upkeep of the house so in 1902 the estate was given to the nation.
Victoria and Albert’s private rooms, had been sealed since 1901 on the orders of Edward VII but 1954 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave permission for these rooms to be unlocked and the public admitted, including her bedroom where she died. The gates that sealed the rooms are still present.
