Babylon, Decision To Leave, The Northman, Nope, The Whale, and Mia Goth for Pearl got snubbed. I’m genuinely shocked neither of those movies didn’t at least get a cinematography nomination
Northman is my favorite movie ever and holy shit did it deserve cinematography imo. Also Decision to leave not being in Editing or Director is a big cap.
@@zachsutton6195 I would’ve swapped Elvis for Nope in cinematography. As much as I liked Elvis, I think the cinematography in it is messy. And for film editing, Babylon should’ve taken Elvis’ place. I think stylistically Babylon had much better film editing than Elvis
Whenever people get on me for caring about awards shows I think of the Ron Swanson quote from Parks n Rec “I still think awards are stupid. But they’d be less stupid if they went to the right people”
1st: Andrea Riseborough had this Last Minute Campaign through Social Media and many celebrities were endorsing her, this is a story that was being brought up about last week. 2nd: Everything Everywhere All at Once actually did not make on the Visual Effects Shortlist, that the Oscars Posted on their site, the other 5 that could've got in that didn't we're: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World Dominion, Nope, & Thirteen Lives. & 3rd: Women Talking joins with The Blind Side, A Serious Man, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Selma, & The Post to get Best Picture & 1 other Nomination since the Picture expansion for the films of 2009/2010 Ceremony
Remember that Spielberg is loved by the academy. The biggest snub was Babylon and the biggest surprise was the triangle of sadness. I wanted South Korea to be nominated again in the international category.
Wow, having seen Babylon just last night you are spot-on about Margot Robbie not being nominated in Best Actress. That was a tremendous performance. Every year, without exception, the Academy makes astonishing omissions.
Excellent video! Biggest Best Picture snub for me was Babylon. I honestly don't understand the hate it is getting. Saw it once and have wanted to see again ever since. I can see it becoming one of those movies that eventually become a classic after having a not-so-promising beginning.
It doesn't get hate, it's just very... divisive. I watched it with three friends two of us (me included) LOVED it, the two others HATED it. For whatever reason. :D
I didn’t like it much because it was too long and just felt like a jumbled mess of a story. That’s for me at least. I plan on rewatching it because I want to like it or even love it like other people
Sad about Danielle Dreadwyler, Till was spit on this award season. In my dreams I see EEOAT doing a Return of the King move, but I know it more than likely won't happen. I still need to see All Quiet on the Western Front, I plan to watch that, RRR and Woman Talking this week hopefully. I appreciate your videos. Sending good vibes from Charlotte!
Decision to Leave not receiving a nomination is both egregious and a downright snub. It is the second time they have done this to Park Chan-wook - the first time was for The Handmaiden (2016). The man has directed some of the best noir-style/thriller films seen in the last 20 years - JSA: Joint Security Area (2000), Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), Old Boy (2003), Lady Vengeance (2005), The Handmaiden (2016) and, now, Decision to Leave (2022).
Thanks for the reminder. I knew I was still annoyed with them about something, and it's their over-looking of The Handmaiden. When I saw it, I was convinced it would be the first Korean film to win Best Picture. All I could think with the decision making was that it was too sexy for the Academy. It's difficult to find evidence that Hollywood understands sensuality, so The Handmaiden may have made them uncomfortable. As for Decision to Leave, do they think they've done Korean films having awarded Parasite already?
Happiest for Jamie Lee Curtis finally getting a nom. Thought "Everywhere" was awesome and wondered how it would fare come Oscar time- not too bad, apparently.
I also thought Michelle Williams was overacting but I saw video clips of Steven Spielburg’s mom and she does act like the way Michelle Williams portrays her.
Danielle Deadwyler was so good in Till (only female performance to contest Cate Blanchett, maybe; Dale Dickey also?) Also, why did they decide to leave out Decision to Leave? Also, Paul Mescal winning would be such joy!
These Oscar reaction videos are just the best. Am honestly very happy with lots of these nominees! The ratio of Babylon noms to Fabelmans noms needs to be reversed, but otherwise, this is overall pretty awesome. Already looking forward to your next year’s Oscar reactions video!
Biggest snubs by far are Decision to Leave missing International and Danielle Deadwyler missing Lead Actress (could also include Top Gun in Cinematography but I'm not as *upset* about it as I am just shocked it's not there). Biggest surprises for me were Top Gun in Adapted Screenplay and The Whale missing Picture as Triangle AND Women Talking moved in instead of one or the other. (I kind of feel about The Whale the way you do about The Fabelmans tbh.) Also Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie. Can't believe that campaign memed itself into existence and then worked.
I was reading about the "Andrea campaign" yesterday online. It's not just a few fellow actors, it's a lot of them, all academy voters. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if she wins. The actors are the biggest branch. Since Andrea isn't nominated at SAGs they may well give her the Oscar. After SAG there's a month long to campaign and vote. Crazier things have happened at the Oscars 😂
RRR for Best Picture? Are you guys crazy? The movie is like Indian version of Fast & Furious. Grand picturization but average acting quality and logic thrown out from senses. The actors in the movie are average actors who have never been shortlisted for National Awards before. Only reason the movie in limelights due to massive marketing campaign done heavily in USA. As a Indian, I am embarrassed that this movie is representing India
@@madhurmumbai726 Well you will be happy to know that this is not the movie India offered for consideration. The official entry from India is Chhello Show. Do you have an issue with Naatu Naatu being nominated?
I like Babylon but know we’re in the minority, so I’m not surprised at the few nominations it got. Perhaps it could have cut back a little on the bodily fluids and a certain cameo to make the movie less alienating. Thanks for doing this! Looking forward to your prediction video 😊
@@SCharlesDennicon But it’s never in the awards conversation. I thought it could get some nominations for crafts, and it did. I did not expect to see it pop up in other categories which are quite competitive this year.
I'm surprised you haven't watched Puss in Boots! It's so cute and it's extremely good, amazing story, writing, characters, humor, visuals. If you want a movie that's gonna make you feel good (or have an existential crisis idk) you need to watch it!!
Just saw Babylon. A fascinating mess. More Baz Luhrman than anything remotely reflecting the era. And yet I'll be watching it again. And Margot Robbie! Her choice of roles is always fascinating. And I suspect there are hidden reserves we haven't seen yet. (Plus it was fascinating to see her playing opposite Samara Weaving for a moment. I've always thought they should play sisters in a film.) Just saw Triangle as well. Glad to see it there. I think most of the Wakanda Forever noms are just Black Panther holdovers. And jeepers! Spielberg has gotten way too much respect here. I wish I had seen All Quiet for my month long Netflix moment, but I just can't do them more than one month a year. And I'm really getting to hate the Netflix's no physical media policy. I am praying Guillermo made a deal for his work with them to get his stuff out of Netflix jail. Ditto All Quiet... Thanks Marianna it was a joy to watch the announcements with you. Everything Everywhere All At Once better win. And the Fabelmans better NOT.
Excellent video Marianna. Loved it. Was great to see your reactions. I was happy to see everything everywhere get nominated a lot. I adore that movie. Still need to see all quiet on the western front, but I’m sure it’s absolutely amazing. Will check it out soon.👍
Your reaction at Andrea Riseborough! HARD SAME. You should research how her campaign went. Personally, I think it was an unfair use of privilege that robbed other people's chances. I am still not fully over her nomination but I'm slowly coming to terms with it, but I am genuinely afraid her momentum of being the "indie pick who did her own campaign" will steal the spotlight from Michelle Yeoh which should definitely get the win. If ever that happens, we riot.
I wouldn’t say it was a “privilege” being a non- household name in a movie with a tiny budget and no money for months-long Oscar campaign. Compared to companies with millions of dollars pushing for awards, this is a grassroots movement to get people to see her movie and performance. Stories like this is why people should still care about award shows. And I say this as a Chinese fan of Michelle since Yes, Madam! Don’t worry, it’s still a race between her and Cate.
@Alice Wang it's not grassroots to get your famous friends to promote you. They mostly all had the same exact instagram post as if they just copied and pasted a source. It's definitely privilege
are they her friends though? or just admirers of hers? She's not exactly a big name in Hollywood nor even a household name. Andera is by far one of the better preformances in her category for To Leslie. How is it privilege? Surely having millions of dollars behind you for your film is privilege?
I'm not replying because I didn't intend nor want to create an argument in Marianna's video. I just wanted to share my opinion. This would be my first and last reply. Privilege takes different forms. Let's not deny that she has white privilege. You could say other actors have privilege in a financial sense because the firm that represents their movie (not them) have millions of dollars for campaigning.
Really excited this time, and thanks for putting the Nominations together ! By the way, I really have to compliment your video-set up, pardon my English, But I like how lines and lighting are on point, there’s depth and a clear focus, sound is qualitative as well 🎉
I'm surprised Nope didn't get any nominations. I would've preferred Nope take the best picture spot over Avatar 2 (Even though I mostly enjoyed Avatar 2, it wasn't the best film of the year). The academy really isn't a fan of horror films or science fiction movies. Other snubs include The Northman, Pearl, The Menu, Barbarian, and Bodies, Bodies, Bodies to name a few. I know most people were split on Men, but I liked it a bit more than most people. That film was gorgeously shot and it had strong performances and the score was impressive. Hell, I would even include The Black Phone mainly in turns of performance. Ethan Hawke's performance still gives me nightmares. I still have yet to see some of the nominees (RRR, Women Talking, Aftersun, The Fabelmans, The Whale, Babylon, Black Panther 2, All Quiet on the Western Front, EO, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, To Leslie, Turning Red, Marcel the shell with shoes on, Triangle of Sadness are on my watchlist). There's probably more that I'm missing, but you get the idea. There's also other snubs that I have to watch as well (I have a long list in my mini notebook containing the nominations and the snubs, so I have some catching up to do). I was also surprised The Batman got snubbed for cinematography and production design. In terms of those aspects, The Batman was one of the standouts. Side Note: Since the Academy has ten best picture nominations, I think it would make more sense if each category had ten nominations as well. That way there's more variety. It feels limiting when there's only five, but that might just be me.
I personally liked the fablemans but Paul Dano should've been nominated instead for supporting. He's so under appreciated not sure what else he needs to do for the academy to recognize him
Decision to Leave getting snubbed was such bullshit. RRR getting only song made me sad. But Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Naatu Naatu all in one night is going to be amazing.
Andrea Riseborough gave one of the year's best performances and would be a deserving win. But I predict she and Cate will split the vote, giving Yeoh the win.
I didn't like The Fabelmans either, so count me in. Elvis was also one of them. But do watch To Leslie, and see why Adnrea Riseborough deserved it. sorry for Daniel DeadWyler in Till, biggest snub.
Everyones talking about Andrea Risborough being nominated because of the unprecedented campaign from A-listers to get her considered since her film did not have the studio money or power to be seen or her performance considered, because at the end of the day the Academy has a class system when it comes to which movies it cares about. And because of that shake up and publicity, everyones blaming her for taking the place of Davis or Deadwyler when we all know its Armas and Williams who should not have those nominations.
Danielle deadwyler is a heartbreaking snub for me she is better than all the 5 actresses who get nominated I loved Brian Tyree Henry too much it’s unexpected well deserved nomination
So rooting for Everything to win Best Pic, and all the awards it was nominated for.. I would have loved to seen Aftersun nominated for more, including Best Picture. I know it was on your honourable mentions of ‘22. But it is such a powerful movie. Maybe it’s too ‘small’ and ‘indie’, but I was vibrating w emotions after watching that film. Cheers!
I highly recommend Decision to Leave to everyone - especially those who love noir films. I firmly believe Park Chan-wook is a master of cinema alongside Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Billy Wilder, John Ford, David Lean, Sir Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Siodmak, Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese.
I honestly think All Quiet is a dark horse to win best picture, Babylon while im happy it got the three it did, the film deserves so much more, it was my favorite movie of the year
I need to watch All Quiet on the Western Front now. Triangle of Sadness would get a much higher rating from me if it cut out the entire first act. Everything before the yacht seemed pointless and added to what felt like an overlong movie. Without that first bit it'd be much more enjoyable.
I was shocked and disappointed that Muru from New Zealand didn't get nominated for international feature film for its blend of English and Te Reo Maori plus a powerful message of power during the 2007 Ngai Tuhoe raids in Ruatoki near Bay of Plenty. It's clearly New Zealand's film of the year.
Sad to see no nom for Janelle Monae after her fantastic multi-faceted performance in Glass Onion. Or one for Mia Goth in Pearl but the Academy doesn't seem to realise horror movies exist.
I would say the most egregious snug would be Danielle Deadwyler for Till. She was incredible and it’s a shame for such a heartbreaking performance it was nixed by Williams (as you said, is a supporting performance but decided that campaign in lead and voters validated, and it’s such an exhaustive performance that is overacted without any nuance or restraint). I saw To Leslie a week ago before Oscar voting closed and Andrea Riseborough was pretty incredible. It is the most shocking nomination, partially because it’s for such a small movie no one has heard of and the campaign for it started with that social media blitzkrieg the first day voting opened Abe Edward Norton, Frances Fischer, Gwenoth Paltrow and dozens of celebrities Riseborough is connected through agencies managed to push this film so fast and hard to Oscar voters is pretty incredible. I hope people do watch the film and give Riseborough a chance because she’s phenomenal in it, but that is an example of a film that didn’t have the funds nor resources to have a full on months Oscar campaign so they rolled the dice and decided to go guns blazing in the 1 week window of voting. Someone did the math and she only needed I think 200-230 votes for first place in peoples’ Oscar ballots (based on the number of people in the acting branch) so she reached out to a lot of people and got the movie in peoples orbits.
Second best 2022 film I've seen, after "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio." The nomination of Judd Hirsch, personally the best performance I've seen in 2022, was everything.
If you’ve watched an episode of “My 600 lb Life”, you’ve basically seen The Whale. The people on the show all have a tragic backstory that’s led to their condition.
I can't imagine why 'Moonage Daydream' didn't receive a nomination for Best Documentary. It's a marvelous film - well directed, well filmed - and, it's about David Bowie, for God's sake...
Everything Everywhere got ripped off for visual effects. Maybe worst snub? Still need to see Decision to Leave, so I could still change my mind on that.
Nice breakdown! We agree on "Tar" and "The Fabelmans," but totally disagree on "Babylon." A huge misfire. "Tar's" my pick for BP, BD, BSP, and BA, but I just don't see it winning anything. I think Cate will be sidestepped for Yeoh - the first Asian actress ever nominated for an Oscar in 95 years! Moreover, I think "EEAAO" is going to have a big night. Snubs, from what I've heard, have to include Danielle Deadwyler, although I have not seen "Till." Personally, I'd given a nod to Mia Goth for "Pearl," but I'm strange that way.
Also, Michelle Yeoh appears to appreciate it more. In Cate Blanchett’s acceptance speech at the at The Critics Choice Awards she seemed not to. At least that was the impression I got.
Haven't seen To Leslie yet but watched an interview of her on Kristian Harloff's youtube channel where they talk about it and the movie sounds really interesting. What's great about this nomination is that it sort of came out of nowhere and was just down to her amazing performance. Imagine nominating someone just because they were really good. What a crazy idea right?
I love how you make sound like this is about them nominating movies and categories you liked, while if fact I saw this whole video as “Did she just single handedly predict 80% of the Oscars, what’s happening on this channel?”
I must say, after watching To Leslie last night, Riseborough is amazing in that movie. With Michelle Williams, I would argue that if she overacted Spielberg would rein her in considering she’s playing his own mother.
Im happy with most of the nominations clearly your not a fan of The Fabelmans i personally loved it and Michelle Williams in it. I wish Babylon had gotten more i loved that film my number one is Banshees im finally seeing Tar 2moro it only just came out in New Zealand.
Andrea Riseborough fully deserves her nomination for To Leslie - my favourite performance by anyone last year. Swap Danielle Deadwyler for Michelle Williams and I'd be happy. Expected more from The Fabelmans - it's fine but nothing special from Spielberg. Elvis is a better film and I don't have any real interest in the subject matter. Austin Butler really held it together. Top Gun: Maverick was the best pure entertainment of 2022 but not likely to win any non-technical awards I feel. Happy for Triangle Of Sadness, it was... memorable! Hoping either The Banshees Of Inisherin, All Quiet On The Western Front or Everything Everywhere All At Once win Best Picture. Oh, and yes Cinematography was a bit of a mess but otherwise, not too shabby...
The Fabelmans is EASILY my top film of the decade. I’m so glad Michelle Williams got into Best Actress even at the shocking cost of Danielle Deadwyler.
Eo and The Quite Girl are very, very good. Not necessarily better than Decision to Leave (still upset about that), but more than worthy of nomination, and really should be must watches.
Okay, first of all, how can you look this stunning on a hoodie? Second, your eyes are truly mesmerizing! Sorry, I know that's not what the video is about 😅 I am not a big fan of war movies to be honest, but the way you smiled and giggled at every mention of All Quiet has made me curious. I agree on The Fabelmans (also LOVED your reactions every time it was mentioned xD) and disagree on Babylon (it's not that I didn't like the hate letter to Hollywood, it just felt very repetitive and I think Margot Robbie was, like Michelle Williams, acting too much). I also think you can pick any actress from Women Talking and put them in the best actress category. When you find out how the VFX of Everything Everywhere were done, you know they deserved a spot instead of Black Panther. I was happy to see some love for The Batman and Triangle Of Sadness. I still wish The Menu was acknowledged in some capacity, I think it's an amazing film. EDIT: WAIT A MINUTE WAIT A MINUTE, no love for The Northman??? What? It should at least have been nominated for cinematography. Come on now, come on. It's a good year overall. I really really enjoyed your reaction, very nicely done!
Andrea Riseborough deserves her nomination. She is the best in her category by a long shot in To Leslie. Speaking of "overacting" it was Cate Blanchett for me who was so hammy, mannered, over-the-top and over-theatrical to the point of being cringe worthy.
I was kind of hoping that Tom Hanks would get nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Elvis. I thought he was great in a role he usually doesn't play, even though he doesn't need the award at this stage of his career.
Biggest snubs: - Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler acting - Top Gun and Nope in cinematography - Decision to Leave in acting, editing, direction - RRR in direction, intl film - The Batman and EO scores
EO is a beautiful and devastating experience. The most unique film I watched in 2022. Curious to hear your thoughts if you end up watching/reviewing it.
It’s all about the campaign. Andrea Riseborough’s desperately campaigned for it. Her last month cleverly coordinated non stop celebrities campaign on twitter and social media boost earned her a nomination. They actually had to ask everyone in the industry to gather more than 200 signatures petition to vote for her (allegedly). It is not an illegal thing to do but It’s not good either for the industry in my opinion. It is unfairly done but they obviously allowed it to happen for a reason. Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett actually campaigned for her? which is I find it unusual. felt bad for Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler who really deserve to get a nomination. I had seen the movie “To Leslie” she was actually good in it but the movie was profoundly depressing to watch.
"Das Boot", for me one of the best anti-war films and according to many "the submarine film ever" got 6 nominations and won nothing. Hollywood wasn't ready for war films from a German perspective back then, I think. Well, it will definitely be interesting
Here are the 2023 lists of Academy Award nominees of 2022 that I hope they’d won (even though I never saw The Fabelmans nor Everything Everywhere All At Once), but they’re all great, fantastic movies. They don’t need an Oscar. The Oscars needs them. Awards are overrated anyway. But anyway, here they are. BEST PICTURE: Everything Everywhere All At Once - Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and Jonathan Wang, producers (Even though I never saw that movie though, but I think it deserved that win though. I really want either Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, or maybe even Top Gun: Maverick to win Best Picture too, because they’re all such great movies. If Top Gun: Maverick wins for Best Picture, then that means that Tom Cruise will finally win an Oscar for producing the film!) BEST DIRECTOR: Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert - Everything Everywhere All at Once or Steven Spielberg - The Fabelmans BEST ACTOR: Austin Butler - Elvis as Elvis Presley BEST ACTRESS: Michelle Yeoh - Everything Everywhere All at Once as Evelyn Wang BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Ke Huy Quan - Everything Everywhere All at Once as Waymond Wang BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Angela Bassett - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Queen Ramonda BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Everything Everywhere All at Once - Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert or The Fabelmans - Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAYS: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery - Rian Johnson; based on characters created by Johnson and the film Knives Out or Top Gun: Maverick - Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie; based on the film Top Gun written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio - Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson, Gary Ungar and Alex Bulkley BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Babylon - Justin Hurwitz BEST ORIGINAL SONG: "Hold My Hand" from Top Gun: Maverick - music and lyrics by Lady Gaga and BloodPop BEST SOUND: Top Gun: Maverick - Mark Weingarten, James H.
