I need to hear the Oscar goes to Godzilla Minus One. Toho needs an Oscar.

I'm so happy to see Godzilla nominated.

I was extremely happy to see The Creator and Godzilla Minus One pick up noms for VFX. Both were very deserving and I enjoyed both films overall, especially the latter.

Charles Melton was robbed for May December.

So GLAD Nimona got the recognition it rightfully deserved!

DeNiro now has the record for the longest Oscar career for an actor; 49 years, from The Godfather Part 2 (1974) to Killers of the Flower Moon (2022). He just passed Katharine Hepburn (1933-1981).

I wasn't entirely surprised at Margot Robbie not getting a nomination given the competitiveness of that category -- but I was very surprised that America Ferrera did get a nomination. I enjoyed Barbie, but I really didn't see anything about that character/performance that ever would have made me think it would Oscar-level. I guess the one thing you can always count on the Academy for: to make wacky decisions.

Not sure if you've seen the video of the Godzilla-1 team celebrating their nom for VFX yet, but it is super wholesome. Glad to see The Holdovers and Past Lives at least get best picture noms, despite them almost assuredly not having a chance at winning.

Congrats to Godzilla! While most nominations were to be expected, Minus One is an underdog, and if it takes the gold that'll be an enormous achievement for Japan and minimal-budget filmmaking in general.

Best bit of the nominations was the loud cheer that Godzilla got when announced. Hope it wins.

Society of the Snow has been pretty succesful here in Spain, everyone's talking about it. Definitely worthy of a Dan Murell review ;)

America Ferrara's character in Barbie was no different than her character in Superstore

Agreed about Asteroid City's production design. And regarding Saltburn blanking, I would have put it in Cinematography.

Zac Efron = he needed to be nominated. I also feel bad for Margo Robbie

I knew it wouldn't happen, but in my opinion, Godzilla Minus One was Best Picture of the year. Glad at least it got nominated for VFX with the low budget and team of 35 VFX artists that worked on it.

Love seeing Godzilla get some recognition. Miyazaki as well!

I kinda felt that Godzilla minus one should've got a best foreign film nomination

To me the biggest surprise was Once Upon A Studio not in the Best Animated Short category.

Whenever the discussion of "snubs" occur, I have to ask the person who they would have removed from those who were nominated to make room for the "snubbed" person, show or movie. And either the person doesn't have an answer, or it leads to a more interesting discussion about who should make the cut.

Godzilla Minus one deserved a best picture nod, It is a better movie than most on this list. I knew it would not get one though since Hollywood is more about politics than quality.

I think this is the first time a Mission Impossible movie has received an Oscar nomination. I looked a few weeks ago and none of the previous entries had an Oscar nomination.

So happy for Godzilla! Im sure now everytime I step into my local toho cinema it will have a well deserved 'oscar nominated' banner everywhere!

Robot Dreams made a lot of noise at TIFF this year. Definitely not a movie you’d expect to be honored by the Academy to this degree so it’s amazing to see that it will get way more recognition now.

I knew it had no chance but personally my 2nd favorite score of the year was easily The Boy and the Heron, I've been listening to that and Oppenheimer constantly for months

I’m pretty happy with these nominations, really glad Anatomy of a Fall is getting well-deserved recognition, the Holdovers nominations were good, but I’d have liked to see Dominic Sessa nominated. Oppenheimer is my personal favorite of the year, so I’m glad it’s still the frontrunner

I would’ve liked a BP nomination for The Color Purple, Across the Spider-Verse, and The Iron Claw, a Best Original Song nomination for Am I Dreaming from Spider-Verse, and TMNT should’ve definitely gotten an Animation nomination.

Was so ecstatic to see Godzilla Minus One get a nomination for VFX that I didn't notice Neil Corbould was nominated 3x in this category on this year! Whoa has that ever happened before? Simone Coco came in close with 2 (you go Simone Coco!)

It's hilarious to me that Barbie, a movie based on a doll with an exceptionally vague backstory, is called an adapted screenplay, but Maestro, a biopic about a real and very famous person, is nominated as an original screenplay. What's the justification for that?

I have yet to see Godzilla Minus One, but it's honestly so great that even though it's on a technical level, this is the first time Godzilla's ever gotten recognition at the Academy Awards (unless someone can fact-check me on that). Bit bummed about Mario not getting nominated, but I wasn't holding my breath for it either--that said, I am pleased to see Nimona in the line-up.

The Iron Claw not being nominated for anything is absolutely insane. So unfair. One of the best films of the year

It's kind of interesting how expectations can affect your mood. Godzilla fans are super excited for the lone Visual Effects nomination, while Barbie fans are disappointed with their 8 nominations including Best Picture.

I'm for some reason glad Godzilla got a nomination. It deserved it!

Though Iron Claw is my Unsung Hero of last year, i'm comfortable with the nominations. I did think it would be sprinkled with some salt and more purple but its okay. The upper categories are HARD, as there were alot of great performances on all-fronts and everything is subjective. I was suprised about Boy and the Heron and Spiderverse for score.

Anatomy Of A Fall getting 5 nominations witnout France backing it up for a campaign or even submitting the movie as their entry for Best International Feature Film simply because of Justine Triet's critique on French politics is absolutely amazing Justine Triet literally said "screw you France" and then gave them 5 nomination, she literally beat politics, oh my god i love her so much 😂

2023 really gave a bang. It was a really strong lineup of varying degrees of films.

I would like to see Dan's review of El Conde. It's quite unique. Also, I'm glad for Gojira. The big guy deserves it.

It blows my mind how so many people are watering down Godzilla getting snubbed out of at least four other categories.

Shocked by no Saltburn, I had it nailed for cinematography at the least. Also annoyed by Shinkai getting snubbed again. The Oscars are really embarrassing for their omissions of top anime movies in favour of mid US animated films.

Can't believe "Peaches" by Jack Black wasn't nominated.

I felt really underwhelmed by these nominations. Nothing too surprising. America Ferrera is probably the biggest surprise but even that didnt feel too out of left field. And it just felt like The Academy only watched 10 films and went "Good Enough". I know that isnt actually the case obviously. But it just seems like they went out of their way to nominate the same films over and over or the same people (I mean at this point both Diane Warren and John Williams could fart into a microphone and the academy would bend over backward to nominate them). I think I would have liked if they spread the love around a little more.

You nailed the real reason I started caring about the Oscars in the first place. As a teenager in Australia, the Oscars were essentially "here's a stack of films you've never heard of, but they are all some sort of great". The main reason I give myself until Oscar night to make my top ten films list of the respective year. While these days, with streaming and me being more plugged into the film world, I'm normally aware of the films beforehand, it still is significant to me for that

Godzilla Minus One should have been nominated in the sound category - the sound design was the thing that stayed with me the most after watching the film. Glad it got at least one nomination though. Daniel Pemberton and Greta Gerwig not getting nominations in their respective categories is actually criminal.

I'm so happy Mission Impossible received their first-ever nominations. After the weak box office this was a well-deserved W. El Conde might be a surprise but those 5 nominees got in a vital precursor which was the American Society of Cinematographers. I'm also very disappointed with Gerwig's snub but I really like the Director 5 so I'm not complaining.

It would be wonderful Dan has time to review the other "Best Picture" nominees. I have followed him long enough to have a decent idea of where his sensibilities are compared to my own. Years ago I got to that point with Roger Ebert and, even though we had different tastes, I could usually tell from his reviews if I might like a particular movie.

The Iron Claw, John Wick 4 & Priscilla getting 0 nominations is absurd.

I'm happy for some movies and animation on the nominees I was surprised that Suzume got snub but you can vote at Anime Awards until 27th of January.

I was surprised robot dreams was nominated, I heard great things about that movie and can’t wait to see it in theaters

I hope Oppenheimer can sit with the Company of Titanic, LotR RotK, and Ben Hur.

Hey Dan, I recently watched all of your "If I ran...." videos which are quite interesting to hear your take. I was wondering if you could do a video of "If I ran the Oscars" which means what would you do if you were the head of the Academy or the producer of the show in making the show's production given that the Oscars have been lacking in the past few years so there has to be an improvement in the show's production so I'm interested to see your take if you led all this. Especially that the Oscars is right around the corner so it's a perfect timing. Hopefully you consider in making one, thanks Dan, you're the best! 🤗

I thought Taraji would bring it home 😢. She’s different in every role she plays. A true actress. The Academy may not believe that show stopping performances are as tough to do but I’d love to see them try it.

Dan, The Holdovers did get a Best Film Editing nomination, and that can be seen as a show of support for the film. Film Editing is the category where you usually see a Best Picture nominee with unshowy editing nominated just because it's popular (Green Book won Best Picture 5 years ago with almost the exact same nomination package as The Holdovers, and CODA won 2 years ago with an even lesser package)... One thing I've learned the last few years is that where the Academy is at during the nominations is very different to where it's at when it picks its winners... I still think Oppenheimer is the frontrunner, but it feels like the type of the film that would have won Best Picture more easily in the 80's, 90's or aughts, so we'll have to see how it does now.

As a Finn I'm sad that Fallen Leaves didn't get the nomination. Also, it would've been nice to see Joe Hisaishi's name too. But overall I'm fine with these!

I watched Robot Dreams at TIFF last year and loved it. So glad on the nomination.

Love that the terrifically true and bonkers Nyad is nominated in both actress categories. Such a fun movie and it relied almost exclusively on the power and efforts of Bening and Foster.

In my opinion, Godzilla deserved to have a nomination for Best Picture. It was a better movie than some that were.
