Folks! I (and "old" norwegian 77yrs) discovered Oscar P in Oslo,Norway back in 1956! He was touring thru the town with JATP (Jazz At The Philarmonic) got his autografh! Still has it! Man he's always since been One of my all time favorites! R.I.P.
Such great comments by an amazing collection of appreciative, knowledgeable people leaving comments. Very feeling group. Losing Oscar Peterson, Niels-Henning Pedersen, Joe Pass, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, etc. is heart-breaking. There will never be another period of musical geniuses like the 50s and 60s gave us. It was a high-water mark never to be achieved again it seems.
I think I would like to pretend that Bill Evans never died. I know how crazy that sounds, but I love Bill Evans for making me feel the way I do when he plays. I cannot explain it. Listening to "Never Let Me Go" for the nearly 15 minutes he plays is like my soul got touched and I left the earth crying all the way. I need to stop.
@@maureen7746 Look up Monica Zettterlund. She played with Bill Evans a short period. There is even a swedish film about MS named "Monica". You may find that too!
Saw him live in 2002 with NHOP and when he entered the stage I had tears in my eyes. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Unforgettable!
There was one table left when I took my son to hear him......it was right by the piano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!He sang what he played!! He winked. He smiled. Oscar, my man.
Can't ever get tired of listening to this. Bass players dream of playing like this. Hell, I dream of playing piano like this, and guitar, and drums, and bass. We need to dream.
@@torbenlarsen331 @Torben Larsen Much, much too young. Sometimes . . . I try to imagine what NHOP, and others who died too young, might have given us if they were still with us.
Heartbreaking. Oscar was 80 years old in 2005 and this must have been one of the last concerts he gave. This has always been one of my favorite tunes. Bless you, Oscar, for all the years of great music. Also rest in peace, Niels-Henning.
AECSRQ Not heartbreaking to me. This is marvelous! Even after the stroke and loosing his left hand his genius and skill is remarkable. Plays better with one hand then most will ever play with both. I join your blessing with a heartfelt Amen!
@Dominic Mullan……you are so very right and this kind of performance be it musical or simply as a reflection of our incredible ability to being creative, openly throws a bright light of how we can benefit from a single note, a gesture of love. Sadly our dark side seeps into what could be a permanent display of what should be a wonderful future for us now and for all the generations to come. But then I am the eternal idealist and have forever felt that music in all its forms is our ultimate saviour.
For me this is the best interpretation of "You Look Good to Me", not only by the fantastic minimalist play by Oscar Peterson, but also by the swingingg and deep play by Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Such a pleasure to listen. Thank You
This too was one of my all time favorites of Oscar's. Saw him play it several times on both coasts. Talked with him briefly after one of his concerts at Symphony Hall in Boston, while I was a student at Berklee Music College in the mid-80s. He was generous with his advice and as personal as though I was a friend. It only deepened my lifelong, heartfelt joy at his technique and musicality.
I had the honour to meet Oscar Peterson many years ago. I built cabinets for his home studio equipment. He was a lovely man. You could feel his strength. A great Canadian but a spirit of the universe. This is s great setting...nice one!
I saw him at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland and the ONLY table left in the place was BY THE PIANO!!!!!!!!! Mr Peterson sings every note and winks at you!! MY MAN!!! OUR MAN!!! Forever in my heart.......Forever!
Sad to think Oscar and Niels are no longer with us. A beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. I have listened to it many times and every time it brings tears to my eyes. It is simply exquisite.
My God, what a player, what a group, what a production all the way around. I'm just knocked out that Oscar is still sounding great, clean, accurate, just plane wonderful, and I'll tell you what--That guitar player is no slouch either. Really, the whole group is amazing, and I'm so glad someone taped this and put it on you tube. Marc.
Very impressive ... I had the privelege to see him at Marciac in 2004, and i remember how it was moving when he confessed that he could not really use his left hand, and Everyone understood why he has a very gifted bassman close to him on the stage, and the second time when he played a ballad and cried at the end of it saying that it was the preferred music of his late wife. A great musician and a very humble human, Respect Mister Oscar, you’ll remain as a legend in the heart of all music lovers.
Indeed. You can hear the few inconsistencies in his runs, where he "dropped a stitch or 2" with his right hand, but even so, he still outplays the best they have today. Rest in peace Baba ...
I once turned down a perfectly fine proposal of marriage when the man said he did not like jazz!!! OH, please do not make fun of older women who still would love to have a boyfiend!!!
Jesus Molina got a chance to be as good he's really young and is killing it. Let's see in 5 years where he'll be but right now he's doing a lot of Peterson type riffs and runs effortlessly. Don't kill me for sayin that go check him out he's just a different cat from other guys.
He was classically trained. Played both books of the Chopin Etudes (Op. 10 and Op. 25) said he changed to jazz because he heard the music going different directions than the composer was taking it.
Looking down from above, hic sum et in spiritu hic. Oscar is still the man!!! and my favorite composition "You Look Good To Me" was his outlook on the life that he and Neils-Henning shared with us.
probably one of the last concerts for NHOP before he died. Great to hear all those marvellous and monumental musicians. Oscar Peterson was awesome : such a dexterity at that age !
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen - bass Absolutely amazing. Listen to him take off at 200 - 210. It was only 10 seconds and must have been at least 45 notes!
This is my first exposure to Ulf Wakenius on guitar, and all I say is "Wow!" What wonderful taste and technique. A perfect compliment to the rest of the group. Guitar and piano sometimes clash when together in a group, but not here, not with two masters of their respective instruments.
Oscarin nelimiehinen orkesteri ei metelöi. Tätä jaksaa kuunnella ja rauhoittua seuraamaan muusikoiden osaamista. Basisti Niels-Henning sai aloittaa hienon sooloilun!!! Voi ku mahtavasti alkoi swengaamaan....!!!???
Sat down for some supper with Oscar at the Roland Japan's owners house who had formerly been president of Hammond Japan. Oscar got up and played the Hammond organ, I think it was a M Series, and just blew us away.
How Blessed we all are to be able to listen and see these incredible legends masters of their instruments in performance displaying their well-learned talent in Jazz. I can't think of any better way of God giving all of us this great gift.
Just glad to see a jazz musician from his era make it past 40 something. Those cats used to smack and booze it up. Oscar kept it clean and his longevity was a testament to that
Prior to this performance, Oscar had a stroke that incapacitated his left hand. I He overcame this and still played with same excellence and high level of emotion as he has so displayed in his entire career. God Bless his soul; he has been my musical hero since 1962.
The Worlds best bassist died shortly after this show. I heard him in Oslo at the Django Festival 2001 together with Bireli Lagrene (The worlds best Jazz Guitarist) and Florin Niculescu (Violin). I was spellbound by the play and interaction between these three masters ! NHÖP may 27 1946 - april 19 2005.
