I really can't wait for this Barbie bubble to burst. No disrespect to the film, I liked it quite a bit. But I think Scott and Perry are both a little hypnotized, thinking this is going to take off like EEAAO did last year. This isn't the same thing. The fact that they think Barbie is a serious contender to win best picture or that they think Margot is a lock for a nomination or that Gosling should be considered the front runner. Their wake up call is coming. Typically I find Jeff to be the delusional one, but in this case I'm on his side.

I agree with Jeff that Robert Downey Jr is the clear front runner with Oppenheimer, but completely disagree that his performance in Barbie as Ken will not be considered as one of Gosling’s best, or if it cheapens the film. I love Jeff’s contrarian attitude about Gosling. He’s more Gene Siskel. Perri and Scott are more Roger Ebert lol. Perri and Scott have a point. Gosling is the best part of Barbie. They lose me when they equate great acting with box office success and critical acclaim. And that’s where I agree with Jeff. The academy doesn’t always think that way. They whipsaw us sometimes and go their own way. If Downey starts winning the precursors, I’m going with Gosling at the Oscars. If Gosling wins the precursors, then I’ll go with Downey at the Oscars. Like Eddie Murphy vs. Alan Arkin in 2006 or Lauren Bacall and Juliette Binoche in 1996. That said, Jeff is being a little dismissive comedic performances winning in the supporting category. It’s actually not as rare as he’s making it out to be. But I agree with them that as of today (11/10/23) it is a two-horse race.

The thought of Ryan Gosling winning for a broad comedic performance is not without precedent, Jeff. Remember Kevin Kline and Marisa Tomei. It does not happen often in supporting actor, though.

My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 11.11.23): 5. Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) 4. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon) 3. Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) 2. Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 1. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) #AnOscarforDowney les goooooooo I feel very confident about my top 5 getting nominated but the 5 spot is a crapshoot. Charles Melton (May December) and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) are quite close behind, and I'm not ruling out the double Poor Things nomination with Willem Dafoe. John Magaro (Past Lives) is starting to feel like this year's Ben Whishaw. I'm not believing in Colman Domingo (The Color Purple), Glenn Howerton (BlackBerry) and any of the other Oppenheimer guys (though I'd vote for Benny Safdie if I was in the Academy).

People may criticize the last third of Oppenheimer, but I’ve seen much more dissent on the last act of Barbie where its social message becomes pretty clunky and a little hokey. I think people love the “fun” parts of Barbie and some the more directly “serious” stuff toward the end too obvious for its own good. I loved both films, but I definitely enjoyed Oppenheimer more front to back and as the months have gone on that movie has only grown in power for me where as Barbie was good but mostly just…cute.

I kinda agree with Jeff in this sense. Look at Best Supporting categories in the past. They’ve mostly went to legends in Hollywood that have an underdog story because they’ve never won an Oscar. Look at Jamie Lee Curtis, Laura Dern, Brad Pitt, Key Hu Quan, etc. they always have a narrative when it comes to that story and RDJ fits the narrative the most because he’s a two time Oscar nominee and has been in the industry for even longer then Ryan Gosling but has never been awarded for his work. The “it’s their time” narrative is what I call it and that will apply with RDJ.

Never mind the movie's subjects. After almost two years in lock down, with dire news dominating television, people are ready for a bright, bouncy, funny, colorful evening at the theater. Oppenheimer may very well be the more "important" film, but a lot can be said for being the right picture at the right time. Barbie is the right movie at the right moment and Gosling is going to be one of its beneficiaries. By the way, love your show!.

I personally think Ryan deserves the nom definitely, but I don't think he ends up winning this. I think Robert Downey Jr will battle it out with a few late sparks like Ruffalo or even De Niro. I still believe Killers of The Flower Moon has win potential after seeing the movie, it is the kind of movie that can peak at the right moment. I never got on the Barbie train, it is a very significant and important movie and Ryan Gosling is terrific(its not just comedic, its very layered), but I see Barbie as a movie that gets a lot of noms, and maybe wins Adapted Screenplay, and it will definitely get a boost with the actors strike ending. But I don't see the wins! I don't think it needs any wins though, the movie is a cultural phenomenon regardless.

Sorry it's late, just catching up on the vids, but I could not agree with Jeff more on this. I mostly enjoyed Barbie, but I wasn't blown away & I thought the worst part of the movie was Gosling. I found him horribly miscast, he only seemed to have one facial expression and I found him awkward to look at and listen to, especially during the musical numbers. I actually kept trying to look at Simu or Ben or Ncuti - literally any of the other Kens or Allen. To think that he is even in the same conversation with RDJ or entertain the idea that RDJ might lose after giving a flawless performance in a flawless epic film in a class by itself makes me want to jump off a bridge. Then again, I'd feel the same if somehown American New Yorker Commander of the French army beats either Cillian Murphy or Bradley Cooper in best actor. I feel like I'm from another multivere right now 🙃😵🤣

Barbie was bound to make a billion dollars at the box office no matter how good it was and who made it because the name barbie was attached to it. Similarly The Super Mario Bros. was destined to make a billion dollars because of it's pop culture roots. Please stop citing Barbie's box office as a special achievement. Oppenheimer's box office is a real achievement that defied all odds for the kind of movie it was.

I have seen May December and in my opinion Charles Melton stole the show from two Oscar nominated actresses (but they all were amazing) and he shouldn’t just get nominated he should WIN the Oscar. Best supporting performance I’ve seen this year so far.

I also watched May December and I think he sucks in the film. In his most emotional scenes, he seemed constipated.

If Ken doesn't get a win,I'd be happy because it's on point with his character.

I understand though why they want Gosling to win.
