In this Part 2 of the Oscilloscope Basics video series, we will cover Channel 2 Invert, Add, and the Seconds/Division adjustment, with emphasis on calculation of frequency based on the number of waveforms on the screen and the time allotted for each horizontal division. Finally a brief overview of the purpose of Triggering and how to switch it on and off.

I tried it, but found the majority of students to be unprepared, undisciplined, and unwilling to learn what I was presenting. So I shifted to Middle School and found the students to be far more cooperative and responsive.

Boy did i need this tutorial, perfectly explained for newbies like me. Thanks for taking the time to explain this complex topic to us. I would really appreciate the follow up turtorial where the occiloscope is used on. 1) Battery powered items 2) mainsTransformers, with and without shared common between primary and secondary 3) Isolation transformers 4) Mains powered items Like you say, there is so much hype, contradiction and waffle around on youtube its difficult to know what to believe. Being a person that has a dozen scopes and use them daily, these types of basic tutorials are great refreshers. Really helps bring us all back to the basic of how to use these wonderful pieces of test gear. Thanks for the great videos as always Uncle Doug. I really enjoy them. BTW I have one of the all time favorite solid state Tektronix scope arriving tomorrow on UPS. Will be doing some videos on getting this classic back up and running and adding it to my collection.

Uncle Doug! Firstly thank you for your amazing content and your kind and giving manner. I have learned so much. I have taken what you have taught and put it into practice restoring and repairing some amazing old amps. I had the same problem with my roll top desk and a cat who would always “unfile” any paperwork in the pigeonholes onto the floor whenever it was open. Bad Kitty!

Another very informative video, very good explanations of the timebase function and triggering. Great demo with the signal generator too. I wish I would have had an instructor like you all of those years ago back at tech school. We had a cat “Katy” that loved to chew on those orange disposable fingernail files, sharpening her teeth as I always told my wife. Our dog “Heidi” comes running when she hears the freezer drawer open to get an ice cube.

Doug, I love hearing your gentle slow talking voice which explains things very clearly to me. I have to think hard about the math part with how many thousands of a second are the same as so many hundredths of a second etc. This has always never clicked with me. Mental block. Great video Doug, i have a very similar tecktronics scope and have used it for years without really understanding exactly what every knob does and why. After your last video i quickly checked the calibration and found one of my probes was way out! Will be doing the same on the time div today!

A very clear explanation. Uncle Doug, I wish that those fellas that print manuals for High tech stuff (especially Seimens and Rockwell) should have you layout the method of instruction in their manuals. After the new manuals cover their asses with all of their safety warnings and disclaimers. They usually start with the first items of explanation with the understanding that the reader knows nothing about the device the manual has been written for. Then, after about a page and a half of good basic explaining, the tone of the instruction becomes that of an explanation to somebody that already knows how the device operates and only needs to be technically tuned up to be able to understand how to install, calibrate, commission, and troubleshoot the device. A big jump in the way the information about the device is being presented. Your explanations have no such surprises in them and leave the instructee with a much clearer understanding of the subject by the end of the instruction. Why the big guys can't follow your example is beyond me.

Siemens and Rockwell... bet you're talking about PLCs and/or drives. That's the stuff I've worked on most of my life and I've concluded they write those manuals like that on purpose. That way they can sell you training to the tune of $500 or $1000 per day, slow paced training that keeps you buying more and more classes hoping to get to The Answers some day. Actually, if the manuals or training were any good I'd probably be out of a job. With good manuals, electricians and maintenance men everywhere would soon figure out that what I do (industrial control systems from scratch, plus troubleshooting and repair) is not magic at all. And yeah, Doug is an excellent teacher. Heck, I've been using scopes for ever and ever, but I still come here to enjoy how he presents things. His style reminds me of a math teacher bacm in middle school who quite literally changed the course of my life...

Thanks so much, Tony. What you describe is exactly what I try to avoid. There are millions of people anxious to learn all sorts of technical skills.....but sadly, they are let down by engineers who are either unable or unwilling to provide effective instruction. This is largely why I became a math and science teacher many years ago, and why I have now turned to RU-vid to continue trying to reach the masses with instruction that can be comprehended.......and not dreaded.

It would be great if you can make a video on oscilloscope dealing with batteries, home supply and checking circuits with oscilloscope. Also I have a single channel osci. (It was cheap). So just wanted to know that does it worth to buy it.

Thank you for another informative video. My cat is fond of finger picks. Everytime I play the pedal steel guitar, when I quit playing, she knows it is times to steal my picks.

So far this has been a great topic of videos! I have tried to watch other oscilloscope videos and they either confuse me, put me to sleep, or both.. Not to change the subject...ha ha ha... I also have a BLACK CAT like yours, saved from certain death almost 5 years ago, when she was as tiny as it gets, almost cold to touch; but she made it! Now she provides us with love and despite Shadow's "drama queen behaviour", she is a loving cat! Thanks for your videos!

I have three rescued dogs, and in the past I have had rescued cats as well. Sadly, black dogs or cats are far less likely to be rescued or adopted; apparently for reasons of religious superstition. Sometimes I wonder if we truly live in the 21st century , or if we have been transported back to the Middle Ages. It's not like the animal can self-determine its own color scheme prior to birth. Anyway, thank you for rescuing an animal. I personally tend to identify with those paw- shaped bumper-sticker magnet things that you see on cars which ask the question, "who rescued whom?"

Thank you for your kind words! Cats are a living creatures and deserve to have a safe place - living outside here in Nebraska during winter can be very difficult and many cats don't survive! The cats gave back us -and keep giving us- many great feelings and their personalities are so different, but so much fun to observe. Helping people is also very rewarding and it brings back much more than the original investment! Just like you observed about black cats and how they aren't adapted, compared to other colors...., but also what you say about "Middle Ages".... is sad. Just like people who have not learned (I'm including myself here also!) from our past mistakes, we are likely to repeat the same bad decisions! Good example is communism/socialism and or Egypt and Rome.... they all destroyed themselves from inside out! It is so sad but that is how we people do things!

Uncle Doug.....Where were you in 1969, as my beloved military instructors (who were most definitely never trained as teachers) tried to convey the same information, albeit somewhat less effectively! LOL Thank you so much for prompting my aging gray matter to organize and remember the most basic of O-scope info! Without your patient, concise instruction, I *might* have figured it out on my own.....but would I have taken the time?? A very welcome video! Your signal generator is awesome. It may be worth noting that smartphone stereo signal generator apps are readily available for free. All you need to do is rewire a an earbud jack to something more usable, such as quarter inch guitar jacks. Waveforms might not be mathrmaticslly perfect, and I doubt you can get a million Hertz, but it works really well and costs nothing if you have a smartphone.

Cats are fun to watch. When they jump up onto something they first carefully survey the height and then proceed to calculate the exact amount of effort required to just barely clear the edge..... making sure to not over jump or expend any more energy than needed, and they rarely under jump. Doesn't matter if it is 10 inches or 4 ft. Thanks UD for this series. I have always wanted to learn how oscilloscopes work. Your method of presentation is always enjoyable. It is hard to misinterpret the information you provide due to your unique teaching approach.

While an instructor with the US Navy we taught our students that before they could touch the probe to a particular portion of the circuit they had to be able to draw what they expected to see. Voltage deflection/frequency/offset/etc. It may sound difficult to do but actually is essential to understanding what you are looking at. Once you know what to expect you can go to the scope controls and set it up so when you do touch the probe to the circuit you will know if it is good or bad. When I see techs attaching to the circuit and then adjusting the scope controls to get a good presentation it makes me wonder if whatever they end up seeing is really telling them anything they can use. Using this process of figuring it out first and then looking at it will make you a better tech and sharpen the tools in your skill set.

Thanks again Doug, great explanation as always! Are you planning a video series on solid-state electronics? I'd like to see this pro teaching skills in action on transistor based guitar amplifiers. There are a lot of great circuits to work on but they are more complex and hard to read the schematics than let's say a small tube amp. I would be pleased to gain some knowlage on that topic, too. Excellent introduction to oscilloscopes from someone whose explanation-skills are honed to the max. Besides all your great explanations, there is a questions that burns under the fingernails of your devoted viewers: Is Jack only crazy about US-brands like Scotch or 3M, or is this furry connoisseur of adhesive tape also acquainted with the more exotic flavors of sticky comestibles like the German Henkel/Pattex-brands? :) Good show, thanks a lot for sharing!

Great instructional videos on the scope !! Well done and explained !! BTW couldn't help notice the model # of the scope, I have a model 2210 along with two other Tek scopes, both 2 channel, 1 is max 250Mhz, 2 the newer one is 400 Mhz,,

I love the hobby, been playing with radios since I was in my early teens so I have been playing with them since the days when vacuum tubes were KING!! Its nice to sit down and listen to the old radios and bask in the GLOW of the nice warm tubes on a COLD winters night ! the large old AM and single side band transmitters become an efficient shack and or bedroom heater !! I have a Collins KWS-1 transmitter from the late fifties and those Blower COOLED 4CX250B's throw off a good amount of heat when transmitting CW !!!! Good job as always, if I may I would like to suggest that when measuring frequency on a periodic signal it is common practice to adjust the sweep rate such that you have at least one full cycle on the screen and only one full cycle. The frequency is then the number of boxes times the sweep rate divided into 1, which is really what you did without having to worry about how many full waves you had because it is one. If that makes sense? Anyways good jog and thanks for sharing.
