Oshi no Ko - Episode 1- Reaction and Discussion! This is NOT what we were expecting!!!

Oshi no ko is a double-meaning title, it either means "My Favorite Idol" or "Their Idol's Children".

Fun fact; this series is written by the same author as Kaguya-sama: love is war (canonically set in the same universe too). Man sure can make a traumatic tragedy story just as well as wholesome stories….

Didn't anticipate the reincarnation angle. Episode started off with "Ah, how wholesome" to WTF I just made myself sad.

I’m a manga reader, and this is my favorite series of all time. When I say this adaptation was perfect, I mean it. They took iconic panels from the manga like Aqua’s revenge play beginning, AI’s death scene, and Aqua’s determination in the car and animated them to literal perfection. Love is War’s adaptation is perfect, Oshi no Ko’s is also. Aka Akasaka fans stay living good.

I'm the same as you. Idol stuff isn't really my thing, but I still decided to check out at least this first episode (I was also curious about the length, because it's not usual to see an anime episode that is almost as long as a movie). At the end, I was like "Now that's how you do a premise". You get everything you need to know in just one episode : the main characters, their backstory, their goal. And it also conveys some really powerful truths about the entertainment industry. I did find a bit weird how the movie Director had such casual conversations with a one-year old, but it made him stand out when at first I thought that he would be a side character for just one scene. There's also the whole fan/stalker thing that is really well presented, as sadly there are people out there unable to differentiate a character from the actual person playing it, and the way Ai was described as, essentially, being tied to the lies she had taken the habit to tell, and playing whoever her fans expected to see from her. Finally, I'd say the art also played a huge part in this. I know it's become common to have characters with shapes in their eyes in anime, but that was used in a way to carry more than just a strange aesthetic choice or show who's the main cast. For the first time in a while, I'm looking forward to seeing the next episode, because we're getting into the actual story, and a story of vengeance is always cathartic.

Im watching this for the first time and i can say 1st ep is a masterpiece.

If someone introduce an anime that is too cute for your taste that have a grin look on their faces, it’s most likely the anime has some shady elements in this. Don’t underestimate anime. :V

The title "Oshi No Ko" reads several ways in Japanese. One is "My Favorite Girl", another "The Child of My Favorite Girl" I think it's a well-crafted name.

You should go back and re-watch that one show from Mario you didn't like. You might have quit it one episode too soon.

When it comes to manga and anime, you need to check the target demographic. Oshi no Ko is seinen so it targets mature audiences. That should be clue enough that it will not be just some cutesy show because of the art style. The seinen works I've seen so far have been braver in depicting and/or breaking down disturbing topics compared to Western works.

Gonna keep this spoiler free, but the stalker and the father are not the same person - and Aqua recognizes this. Aqua understands that the stalker is just some random student who doesn’t have the intelligence to track Ai down once, much less than twice, and that a mastermind - their father - was feeding him information. Aqua’s quest for revenge is against their father, who was hoping the stalker would get rid of them all for him.
