The writer actually wanted to write Kaguya Sama as a dark drama, his editor convinced him to write it as a comedy instead though. So Oshi no Ko being a tragedy is actually more in his usual style.

When the company president is shown drinking alone toward the end of the episode, there is a second cup of sake next to him for Ai. He's marking the occasion of her 20th birthday. Additionally, what happened to Ai is probably based on the real stabbing of JPop idol Mayu Tomita. A stalker stabbed her more than 30 times outside a venue she and her group were performing at. The attack resulted in changes to police policy and the law when it comes to online stalking and threats. However, a member of idol group 22/7 went on hiatus a couple of weeks ago due to a stalker. So there is more work to be done.

The director did care for her…he was drinking because he was sad about her but maybe you missed him having a cup there for her because he said he wanted to drink with her. Great reaction tho I can’t wait for more.

The first episode went above and beyond my expectations, i cried at the end and the after credits just adds extra emotional damage,and i really like how "realistic" it is to the dark side of kpop and jpop

It was a roller coaster of emotions, culminating in one of the saddest death scenes in anime. They made you fall in love with a character in a single episode (movie, really), only to kill her off. Ai, btw, if you haven’t been told yet, means “love.”

The studio has a behind-the-scenes series on this first episode and WOW! The dedication that each department (art, music etc...) put into crafting an (entirely unexpected) 90 min "first episode" really showcases their talent and drive to respect / make-better-than the manga.

Love is a very important aspect to Ai's character, and how the kids think and feel about her going forward, her name, Ai, literally means love, her full name Ai Hoshino means "Star of Love"

When he showed up at the hospital, he knew that Ai was there and that she was pregnant, and he knew her full name, which was never made public. Later, when he killed her, he knew the address of her new apartment, and he knew that she had children (plural). Aqua is right: someone was feeding him information, and it had to be someone that knew all of Ai's secrets. Ai's manager and his wife would have known all of that stuff, but what's their motive? Ai was their star idol. The father is probably that only other person who had all of that information.

In many east Asian culture, "raising" doesn't just means foster care or raising a kid, but rather a master/mentor and apprentice relation, that teaches you from inside out of the field.

They really did tackle the "dark" side of the Idol/entertainment industry and the Aqua is going to use that to his advantage to seek out and kill his father for what he has done I am definitely on board for this

The show has much more depth into Japanese culture than what we are used to as Western audiences. Idols cannot break the rules, getting prego at 16 is one of those unspoken rules that Idols cannot break because you don't want to encourage single parenting and sex before you are even an adult (regardless of your or my personal opinion on this issue, its clear some behavior is not supposed to be glorified, see American modern culture for reference).

As a Vtuber fan (specially Hololive), all these subjects hit very close to home. The fan that killed Ai might seem too cartoony for people who are not familiarised with the medium, but these types of fans do really exist, and reading their posts online might be some of the most disturbing shit you can ever read. And this isn't the only reality gut punch this series is gonna give you

Most series of this genre tend to follow a self-insert isekai protagonist (usually dying to a stray truck) in a fantasy world of swords and magic, often with a harem. That, or a parody of the aforementioned genre. Oshi no Ko may be an isekai, but an isekai is the last thing ONK is about. 38:55 "Wonder if he's sad about her, or it's business." The former, he poured one out for her in her memory right there. The same drink that he promised her they would have together after she finished her dome concert, which would also have been when she reaches the legal drinking age. Glad you enjoyed the first episode! Happy you found it as wholesome as everyone hyped it up to me - and more besides.

Ai's case is the worst case scenario but I saw one of my favorite group member get sabotaged by the korean fans to the point he can't join group activities anymore just because he got married and "betrayed them". That was on 2014, they still bother him on his solo activities to this day. So yeah, idol culture sadly can get that crazy. I'll look forward for the next episodes! Ahh great reaction guys! I'm really glad you picked this show up, might be AOTY for me so far! Also great cover as always Ange! Like you guys said, it really shocked me how they made us so attached to Ai's lovable character in one episode and then killed her off in such tragic way. I think there's really something to be said about how despite being a self proclaimed "misanthrope" who didn't know how to love, Ai was probably the most loving and selfless character in the entire show. She tried to constantly meet the expectations of everyone in the idol industry who only used her as a commodity for their own self interests rather than caring about Ai the human being. And even before that she grew up in a loveless and abusive family. The whole reason that Ai never learned how to love was because she was used as a tool by everyone around her. And when she finally had her children, who Ai finally realized that she truly loved as she's dying, she never had the chance to live and grow with them as the happy family that she wanted. And the sad thing is that this is actually based off of real stories in Japan. There have been multiple cases of idols being stalked and even murdered by so called "super fans". There is a culture of unhealthy possessiveness that some fans tend to have with these public figures. I'm super happy that Aka (the author of the manga) is bringing the danger of these parasocial relationships with entertainers which a very real problem in our world to light with this show! Btw, if you are re watching the music video, try to watch it with the english subtitles as well if you can! I think you'll find it very insightful! Looking forward to more reactions! :)

You'll absolutely love this one! Both Oshi no ko and kaguya sama are so well-written it was obvious the author had such a big brain lmao idk how to say it but esp for this one, i love the approach they took to expose the entertainment industry the way they did. As a former stan, it really hit hard that even tho i was never in the said industry, ive been following people who had the same experiences and its just so eye-opening. It's a clever way to inform viewers of how stuff works, especially with media and publicity, and oshi no ko might have just pulled it off the best, to me personally.
