Dont pay for water. Tap is exellent!

Oh and the bottle holder thing on the trashcans, is so that poor people who live of taking bottles back to stores and get money for them, don't have to rummage around in the trash.

You can save more money by bringing your own bottle because tapwater is drinkable and delicious on Norway. Sincerely a Norwegian

the reason the "refugees" have enough money for food etc. is that the government funded "NAV" is handing out money and helping to get work for the unemployed. Even native norwegians get this type of support.

FYI for anyone planning on traveling to Oslo and don't want to pay out your ass for a train ticket to or from the airport. Take a NSB train and it is about 2 mins longer and half the price. It is also a lot easier to get your luggage on and off that train.

I would say most backpackers who travel to Norway choose to go to the mountains and fjords to experience the beautiful nature that the country has to offer. Camping is a great way to travel in Norway on the cheap.

8:23 Take the local train instead. It's not much slower and way *way* cheaper. I hope you come back and spend some more time in Norway later. =) Regarding the bottleholders. All places that sells bottles are required by law to also accept them back and pay you a tiny sum for handing back the bottle. Some people still don't take the bottles back though, so the stand is there so people can leave their bottles there for poor people to take back to a store or something to earn that money.

The Norwegians you saw, might have been from other countries. Unlike, in the US, we don't categorize all white people as "white people" :P We emphasize nationality a lot more compared to Americans, who seem to focus more on race (from what I can tell). When I grew up, during the early 90s, the terms "black" and "white" weren't even used here. It has since been adopted from English, but I preferred it when we didn't use those terms. Oslo inhabits a lot of Swedes who come here for work. Only a couple of years ago, before the Syrian refugee wave really took off, the largest immigrant group in Oslo consisted of Swedes. There are also quite a lot of Poles and Eastern Europeans here.

Norway was so amazing for me. Went there to see a friend and ended up loving the entire place. So peaceful, so happy, easy language to learn, and literally everyone is like a 9 or 10 on the attractiveness level there; ethnic Norwegian or not. Expensive as hell, but I hope I can leave America for Norway one day. I love the community and great public transport properties of it, too.

I saw some videos where missionaries go to Norway to get the immigrants converted. They don’t bother w/ the Norwegians as they are too educated

I'm a born and raised Torontonian in Canada, and when my sister and I visited Oslo, we felt right at home. Prices were pretty similar in comparison from home, the people were generally very helpful, but curt, because they're in a major city, they've got places to go! I'm the same at home, I"ll help you, but I'm curt and give quick answers because I'm not out to hang around; I'm either on my way to work, or on my way home and I'm not out to play tour guide, lol. Either way, we LOVED Oslo and can't wait to visit again! I especially want to taste that wonderful Norwegian Cider once again, mmmm.

The rate of employment is very high and its very traditional specially in Oslo that people have a "9 to 5" job. So where all the women at ? Try Saturday night and you'll see how much women this city has

I recoginze the hostel, I stayed at the exact same one a year ago haha! Also in Oktober and there were loads of young people/ backpackers then. So I guess it was just by pure chance that there weren't any this time around :) Anyways, great video! keep it up

The local train takes only 2 minutes more, and cost less than half than the express. Also it comes with an extra hour and a half of public transport within the zones. It also has a convenient app called "Ruter".

The refugees like to come to Norway, because here they are covered by the welfare state, and even if they never work, they can live a decent life. You are in the eastern part of Oslo, which is like the poorer part. The west side is much more wealthy, and also more "white" (no offence).

If you take the regional trains to the airport it is cheaper. But it takes 2-3 minutes more and just jun on 20-minutes intervall compared to express who every 10th minute. It is about 2-3 times cheaper compared, depended on if you allready have a publictransportpass for the day you go out too the airport.

The refugees have enough money to live healthy (and to some degrees wealthy) lives because of NAV, which is a system we have in Norway where those who need it get money to be able to live a normal life, and also help to find jobs. That, amongst many other things, is why Norwegians has to pay almost half of their earnings in taxes.

If u want to save some cash, u could save about 50% with the local NSB train to and from the airport. it takes the same amount of time for 101 NOK each way. Xpresstrain is about 190 NOK. The local ticket can also be used for a couple hours in the city (bus, tram, metro) after arriving too.

8:15 Instead of the Express Train you can also choose the public transport provided by the NSB trains. It's almost half the price: 101 NOK. However, I see how it's more relieving and safe to have a train that goes directly (and a little faster) to the airport.

Most of the refugees that come to Nordic countries don’t have proper education or skills to get a decent job in those kind of countries. The gap (of skills and knowledge and education) between the native population and the immigrants is huge... So there is a high unemployment rate.

What I noticed is wherever you walked, there were very few cars and very few people. Are there really that few cars and people over there? I know Norway has a very small population but I didn't expect Oslo (the capital) to also have a small population. I thought a large segment of the population would be crowding Oslo.

Uppermidwest is very Nordic. Minnesota has the most generous welfare. Spending money is an investment so we do our best to help people regain their confidence with helping people to gain skills to get a good job. I was in Norway, Denmark , Sweden, Finland. Denmark was my favorite. Tivoli, lovely park. Clean, lots of bikes, healthy looking , not many overweight people.. Breakfast is much different, few sugar filled cereals, heavy brown bread, fruits, oatmeal, herring, etc. I did buy a Danish pastry, excellent with coffee. Also a street Hot Dog. I’m Nordic so I guess I have a bias.

So what did you actually do in Oslo?

I have to say something about the place you stayed on, because those buildings makes up not only a hostel, but a hotel and a lot of student accommodations. Even though you have to be a student, some people "tricks the system" and live here without being a student -and they can't throw you out in the duration of your contract. The reason the place has a lot of bad recommendations is because of past history, but also because of the location. It's next to a place where beggars can get food handouts, and also Generius (the shopping center in the vid) is a place where a lot of weird people get together. I live here, so I know a lot of the things going on around here. I've called guards because of people doing narcotics, I've seen needles in the smoking bin, people selling pills right outside... A lot of noise from the kindergarten between the houses... And it always smells like food. Oh and who doesn't like being waked up at 7am from a leaf blower :) However, depending on what building you live in, it's not too bad. It's pretty modern, it's ok-ish price, though not the cheapest student housing and that cornershop is really handy. You can live here during your student life no problems. Coming from the countryside... I'm going to move closer to nature, there's too much noise here :P

One thing I realized after watching today's joint is the perception Americans have that other countries have a lower cost of living than we do. That's clearly not the case in Oslo, Norway. I live in Daly City and I know what you mean about prices for common things like a meal or a bottle of water being high. But in Oslo, it seems like things are off the hook. I wonder how the refugees you spoke to are surviving in light of the high prices there.

Newly arrivals of refugees do get government assistance to live and buy food. And it’s funny you mention that they’re all young guys as the media likes to gloss over that fact. Some of them claim to be under 18 while being upwards of 35 years old. To get permanent residency and a lot more help with free apartments and stuff like that, some of them have been trough hard stuff of course. But I feel personally that the people who should get the support are the people fleeing from war. As it is quite a big load on our welfare system and social structures and cohesion with larger amounts. So yeah it’s a weird issue in Europe right now, but I’m sure you’ve heard about the refugee crisis in America. It was supposed to be about helping Syrian refugees but it turned into an open invitation by the politicians to be the number one altruist. Of taking in people from the 3rd world. To travel from oslo to my city that is around 50 mil/500km away it costs right under 100 dollars

1 dollar a little under 10nok, in norway you can drink water from all taps even from garden taps cause that water is just as clean as Voss bottled Water, no the water was lower when they painted it under the bridge.

The refugees is not the only struggling side. There are many areas here where most the families with foreign background live like Tøyen, Grorruddalen, Holmlia where the rate of families living on welfare, and the amount of ppl living under the EU poverty rate is high. Also crime rate is very high in these areas. And most of these are not refugees, but norwegian born ppl w foreign background

One suggestion for saving in Oslo. Buy the Oslo Card at the info desk at the airport or in the city center. Don’t take the express train or Flytoget. NSB, the national trains, are almost as fast and tickers are way cheeper. The Oslo card will get you into multiple museums, free rides on any of the subways, city busses, ferries and discounts on NSB trains. It’s worth it.

In norway we have this system where if you have a issue with your body and cant work you can get money from the state, Also if you cant find a job the state will help you find a job, its called NAV, and most people in norway that's ''Homeless'' is fake, because we have a system to prevent those.

Another great thing about Norway is that if you're not Norwegian and you have not brought anything in to the economy or the country in general, you get free driving licence, a decent appartment and free monthly salery and the whole world will scream at those who dare to complain about it.

You basically had the north european experience. Bunch of eastern men come to scandinavia to leech on that wellfare money. They typically send their young men, usually not women since you know they are muslims for the most part.

A good observation! You will see a lot of middle aged middle eastern african south american and asian fugees but mostly these are men. Women are "easily accepted" by the society and it's easier for them to gain employment through the institutional racist web in the norwegian job market. After all, this is the only country that has a ministry for women (& children), yes in Norway we have a minister or secretary for women (& children) affairs. Education is free over here but unless your major is health related, construction or law, or if gifted in sports, you will find it almost impossible to gain meaningful employment. That is why alot of meanual jobs (taxi, bus, restaurant) are a reserve of brown and black. Most black and brown engineers tend to get their education here but seek employment outside the country as no one is willing to employ them over here. That is sad. Overall it is a peaciful environment to raise your children, clean air, free education, and medical services..probably the best place on earth in terms of civil liberties, you can walk free and drive around and be a human being without being frisked and searched as they do in your country which we find very sad and inhuman. But every nation has its challanges and Norge is not an exception. But we value human life and human dignity and that is reflected by the overall quality of life for all that live in Norway. Many nations have a lot to learn from our model but we also have a lot to learn in accepting some simple facts and address the elephant in the room, that is institutional racism, which in most cases is very hard to prove.

dude, instead of taking the express train, if you take the local train NSB, its 5 minutes slower and costs 100NOK, $10 instead of $22... so for 5 minutes you save 12 bucks

Norway is one of the richest countries in the world. 2. Tesla actually cost less that's why you see lots of Tesla. Also, when you purchase an electric car, you will get a subsidy. 3. Refugees get housing and $ from the government, yet are taken care of. Hope these details help. 4. Also, two types of train to airport. The flyover is direct which is pricey and the local train is half price. Bon voyage!
