all your videos abuot throwing techniques are VERY VERY useful and clear, especially when you compare the techniques to clarify the differences ! FINALLY I found some videos to share with my students, THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!
@Tovish1988 I agree with you for that case. But I must say that Kani-Basami is very dangerous indeed, no matter how good the technique is performed, it is a common and instinctive reaction to turn the hips (and the knees) to block it; and this often leads to broken joint. So I agree with the ban, despite this is one of my favourite techniques. Just my opinion (What I totally disagree with is the "ban" of leg takedowns. Sport Judo is getting further and further from its martial spirit... =( )
@ Poopwhatever Huh? We were talking about Kani Basami. Also, you could do Tai Otoshi from that grip, but their balance is counter intuitive for the throw. You're way too close to them assuming you actually went for Osotogari for a hand technique like that, in addition to losing most, if not all, of your leverage power. In order to compensate you'd have to drop so ridiculously low to create the proper room, or they'd already have to be off balance in that direction.
@ Poopwhatever Makikomi throws are good for close contact situations that have poor leverage. It relies on weight mechanics to supplement pure strength, which you lose being so close, and not under their center of gravity, such as just after a hip throw or reap block. Tai Otoshi is also good against stiff arming, which is another way to take advantage of an opponent putting your leverage in an awkward position.
Yes it did, but I do not think that was the instance shown in the video. They really should have penalized the player who hurt him, not banned the throw. Any throw has the potential to cause injury if done sloppily.
A couple of follow up questions to this video: What year were these videos filmed? From what year is that All Japan Championship in which the Kani Basami is attempted in the video? Around what time were Kani Basami and Kawazu Gake banned from competition? Around what time were leg lock techniques banned from competition? Thanks.
