The Aether 70 is a really amazing backpack and suits me really well. I'm currently using it on my big summer trip this year, starting from Montreal and going to Helsinki, Tallinn, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand. I also tightly compressed a Kestrel 32 inside as I will be carrying that when skiing in NZ, and it has always been by skiing backpack for the past year. Anyway, back to the Aether, although my 19-inch torso probably suits a medium better I chose the small because I found out that when the lid is taken away, the frame of the small Aether is only an inch longer than the Kestrel of which I have used it as a carry on before. So what I did was to pack up until the top of the frame and no higher, and have all my camera equipment in the lid. I detached the lid to carry as my personal item through security, and the rest of the pack as my main carry on. And it worked! So far it has fit on the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350; however, on the older Airbus A320 (with the old interior below msn 3000) the bins were slightly shorter so it was sticking out a bit so I turned it sideways, and there was just one other bag in the same bin. Overall a really amazing backpack and it's probably the best pack of all time. I purchased it from the SAIL in Brampton at the end of 2016 just before the Aether AG came out, and they offered a discount because of that ($230 instead of $330 CAD). There were some changes in the AG that I didn't approve of at all, most notably the hip belt where they sewn the buckle directly into the belt (like the Kestrel) and that way you can't take the buckle out if you break it. In the 2013-16 design which I have you can take the buckle out as it is not sewn into the belt, and also the triangular design of the hipbelt looks really awesome too compared to the AG one.
i was unaware of the lumbar pack when viewing in store the other day. Osprey really have thought out everything you can ask for and more! I am just a little strapped between this and the Xenith 88, i like this one more and the built in waterproof is a bonus but unsure if i would regret the day i am all packed out and need an extra few litres! great review.
Lee Mc The Xenith is a really nice pack, full of great features, but I prefer this Aether/Ariel Serie because of the J-shape front opening. I depends of what you are looking for.
I have the Aether in midnight blue :D managed to pick one up second for £80 minus the water proof cover, £17 for a cover. All in all a good deal and absolutely it, plenty of over packing available with the external straps so I'm happy with my decision:D
Be aware that the non-European version of the Aether does not come with a rain cover. I really don't understand why. Though the materials of the pack make it pretty water-resistant, too.
what bag would you recommend? I was considering the kelty red cloud 90 and 110, and also this one. which one would you recommend? I want to get the most bang for my buck. 350 dollar limit
i have an issue with my osprey logo at the bottom of the AETHER 70 AG. it peels off, do you have any solution for this? because my lovely pack looks like a bird with a broken wings now :( thank you
Thanks for your question. If it does not effect the performance of your Aether, we'd recommend throwing a cool patch over it to trick out your pack! Otherwise, contact Osprey directly.
Someone please tell me. The term for the waist belt tightening system. I believe this pack has it, it’s like the one on my filbe military pack. U pull to the front to tighten. It’s awesome I’d use nothing else now that I’ve tried it. I Just don’t know what to call it.
Thanks for your comment. Here at Backcountry Edge, we just call it a "pull-forward hipbelt adjustment". The Aether packs definitely have it and it makes tightening the hipbelt loads easier than a traditional buckle!
Mélanie Roussel It looks like only the smallest liter versions had the J zipper removed. It was verified on the official Osprey Packs channel that the J zipper still exists on the higher liter packs for the 2017 redesign. Osprey packs commented on a similar concern a viewer brought up on the Aether/Ariel 2017 promo vid.
Mélanie Roussel I do agree with you that Generation 4 is about as close to pack perfection as one can get. I also personally believe that the classic design will out perform the AG version any day when carrying over 30ish lbs. Scoop up an old one while you can, gen 4 of this pack will not let you down.
Tuba Solo the Hiker Yeah, that was my comment on the Osprey channel LOL! And I already own an Ariel 65 L from the 4th generation! 😜. I'm so glad I found it for 200$ on Amazon in December! I just LOVE it so mutch!
+mike r The color "Bonsai Green" for the Aether packs is not quite a bright Kelly green, but is more vibrant than an Olive green. It's kind-of right in between the two colors.
That's good. I do my best to pick earth toned tents/packs to blend into the landscape. I'll never understand why some companies feel the need to make a canary yellow tent, bright orange packs, etc.
