I went through a stage where my bag was leaking once/twice a day! I was so confused as had never had any problems before... I think I've figured out why...I lost weight after stopping steroids and my tummy had changed shape and so when I was sitting on the side of my bath to apply to bag, my stoma looked one shape (& I'd cut the wafer accordingly) but then when I stood up my tummy would stretch flat and the bag must have been pulling away from my skin! Now I always stand to apply the bag and no more leaks 😊😊😊😊

+kateellenberry Yes! They had me sit and apply my wafer at the hospital, but it really should be applied when standing; not only can it help get a better fit, but it'll also prevent skin tearing!

Vegan Ostomy Everything the hospital told me was wrong! They said to sit also and a Hollister representative showed me how to measure for the hole. He had me cutting so as not to touch the open wound at all. I had a wafer that was 2 3/4 " and the hole went just beyond that and he couldn't find a bigger wafer. Luckily I was hooked up with home health care by Catholic Health Services of Long Island. They knew what they were doing and made the hospital look like clowns.

Terrific advice! I recieved very little training, therefore had lots of leaks. I've been an ostomate for just about 5 years now (tomorrow Nov 20th is my 5yr anniversary). Just this year I have seen 2 different ostomy nurses who had tons of great advice. I am using different supplies, and applying them differently now, so I am having very little problems with leakage. I know when I was in the nursing home they would change it. One day they got so aggravated that they told me I was making it happen. 4 to 5 bags a day. I told them they were bad bags and why would I want to put myself through ripping off the bag and having that burning going on with all that pain. I was in tears. Finally I called my friend from the hospital to talk to them and tell them where to get the better bags.Well guess what, no more leaks. Then this nurse who specialized in applying the bags came in and showed us how to prevent all that, and it worked. I loved the two ladies who gave me extra care and did their best to stop the leaking. Occasionally it would leak either from the way I was lying in bed or like one of these other comments because when the belly shifts it's not going to be secure. Thank you all for your comments. I'm a bit worried, next Wed. I go in to have the reversal and have the giant hernia that grew while postponing my surgery too long. So I am not looking forward to all the pain I will have. Even when it was first done, I woke up in such pain, that I told them just let me die. So I can't imagine this being worse and possibly a longer period of time. Certainly it will be done and no other repairs. Thanks for all the info and good luck to all. God Bless!

Hi Eric, I did have a problem with ballooning, at night particularly, but we have excellent Stoma Nurses in Tasmania, Australia and they put me onto a product called Windless Tablets. They are a light blue in colour & you just put one of these into your pouch especially at night with a Eakin Perform Sachet and I usually have a "unbroken" sleep. They also help with odour. I hope this helps others with an Ileostomy.

I use Welland Brand Wipes skin protector, before applying the flange and sealing ring. They have been the best out of three brands I have used. Only one thing with this brand is you also have to use their remover as well ,because another brand remover may not get the flange off without uncomfortable stretching the skin. I haven't had a single blow out of the sealing ring since I have been using these...Not sure what is meant by pancaking, but I have situations where the bag sticks flat down on the stoma like it had a vacuum underneath it. I clear it by pinching the bag just above the flange, so I get hold of the inner lining. Then I crack open the top of the seal to let air in and pull the bag up, thus improving flow ...I apply the sealing ring to the flange first , not directly to the skin. When I stretch the sealing ring to connect it to the flange hole I put a slight cone shape to it. When it touches the flange (wafer) only the edge of the cone touches first, allowing a little bit of shifting before it sticks right down.

All good points made in this video. I'd add to prevent leaks good skin prep (including shaving for hairy guys), being careful limited creases when applying the wafer barrier, taking a moment press down on wafer around the stoma once applied to ensure a good seal but before bag is applied then using a heating pad or blow dryers to warm the area around the barrier seal. Because my stoma is almost flush with my skin a ring barrier is also a necessity. Think also important advice have all the supplies needed to change a bag with you at all times.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 4 года назад
Great points! I do have way more tips in my written review, but I had to made this video a more condensed version for the masses. Have you used convex wafers instead of barrier rings? They may offer leak protection for your almost flush stoma with fewer steps to worry about.

@@VeganOstomy I was blessed good training while in the hospital and with visiting RN's who came for a couple of weeks after my surgery. The visiting RN on his first visit once discharged ordered all my equipment for me. I've seen the convex wafers but my stoma is about flush with skin level not recessed. Also in a location that the surrounding area is rather flat. Seems like the barrier ring is helping, but was considering trying a liquid stoma sealer instead. Have to say I've appreciated all the advice on the Vegan Ostomy channel! For someone who is new to having a colostomy has been a very good resource to learn from.

I definitely like your videos the best of all the ones I've seen. I just wish that I'd been watching them a month ago when I had my emergency surgery. Instead I avoided anything having to do with my stoma and didn't protest with the hospital ostomy nurses would change mine so fast that I had no idea how they were doing it. And at that point didn't care as I was in so much shock as well as having an 8 staple vertical incision to protect. For new patients demand to be taught how to be self sufficient NOT reliant.

I use to leak daily, and I switched to convex, still had leaks then I decided well I'll try a thicker barrier strip and magic! The only time I have problems now is when my skin is unhealthy under my wafer and I usually can feel a leak before it happens. Also now that I'm healed it changes a lot of that! I have a perfect little stoma and it sticks out slightly! Sometimes playing with products helps a ton!

I'm 5 months in now. At 2 months I was still learning and hating it. But it does get better. And it happens quickly after the 2 month period. I tried to change my appliance like every other day and my skin would try to get a little tender spot or 2. But now I only change it on day 4 or 5. My stoma looks great but it did change a little in size and shape. It becomes easier all the time. If you ever use the 2 piece system where you snap the bag to the wafer, I suggest you definitely snap it on before put wafer on skin. I've experienced leaks only from the 2 piece system. I would first put wafer on then snap bag on. One tiny spot not on right, and you will have a mess. And once, only once, I work up to ballooning and still half asleep I decided to burp my bag, and thought I had sealed it again but later sat up to get out of bed and the bottom unfolded and everything started coming out, in my bed. I now get up if I have to do ANYTHING with my bag, and all is good. Another tip I can give you is always face the bag toward the outer hip, not inward or straight down. That way, if you are female, you won't have leaks getting into the crotch area. That could cause a really bad uti. Keep up the positive attitude. You will start really seeing the pro's of a bag. I hope you are a candidate for a reversal one day. I'm getting mine reversed in June, about 9 months into it. I just feel one day insurance won't always be there and supplies are very expensive, and I can't afford to buy them. Plus most pharmacies around me don't carry them. A time will come when we can't trust big pharma or uncle Sam to have our backs.

Okay so I'm literally only like 16 and my actual bag (not the wafer) came off while sleeping. I've changed my bags by themselves for like almost 4weeks now and everything was done right . I have the 2 piece Hollister bag and I even smoothed the wafer and the bag together until it clicked. And I can't get over the fact that it went all over the place and I'm extremely upset ,and on Tuesday I had to change my bag at school because my stoma was burning and itchy and the only thing I tried different that day was ostomy deodorant. My week hasn't been the greatest and I lost so much confidence ....

Hey Maddie, did the other video answer your question about this problem? The Hollister 2pc should not detach unless you want it to, so it's not normal for it to come off at night. Ahhh... ballooning!! I get this quite often. I call it having a Hindenburg moment. I’m always surprised if I wake up and Kermit’s bag is almost bursting, that I am not floating somewhere just below the ceiling. I used to get a lot of problems with leaks but moving over to convex bags sorted the problem for me and it rarely happens now. As for rings, they are a complete disaster! @Hubs88
@Hubs88 8 лет назад
Putting the wafer on correctly is the first step in preventing leaks. One "tool" I find very useful when putting on the wafer is a hair dryer. Besides drying the skin I use it to warm up the barrier ring and adhesive on the wafer so it conforms to my shape and the heat makes it very sticky. Another thing I find helpful is when I'm ready to apply the wafer I wrap a folded piece of toilet paper around the stoma (held in place with a little tape) to act as a guide for centering the wafer around the stoma without needing to bend way over to see what l'm doing. This stops the skin from being folded or stretched and preventing a good fit.

Pressure buildup in the appliance can be largely eliminated by using an appliance that has a charcoal filter. My stoma was placed about an inch from my belly button & I have two creases on each side of stoma because the way my belly is formed.Very akward spot.I was having leaks all the time causing skin to be very irritated as well.I found out for my situation I had to use a deep convex one piece pouch.I cut the hole to proper size and use stoma paste with the alcohol & apply it to the barrier.The paste burns for a bit but it probably also helps with healing irritation.The wax rings do not work for my situation for some reason.Make sure to clean skin with mild soap & gauze with warm water.If my skin is irritated around the stoma,I do the powder then barrier wipe blot 3 times,not to much powder.And if skin is not irritated make sure to use the barrier wipe anyway.Barrier wipes help with adhesion & skin protection.Stand up when finally applying pouch and press & hold for about 5 minutes making sure everything is nice & flat.Then put your pouch belt on for at least three hours.Try not to sit down for about 30 minutes so everything can adhere.If my skin is irritated,I usually try to change it every two days to speed up the skin healing process.Hopefully this helps with anybody going through the same situation.Good luck & God bless.

I then realised that the adhesive remover was dribbling around my nuts 😫🙄🙈 so the moral of the story is put a towel round your waist whilst changing pouch to avoid any accidents 😁

Hi first of all I would like to thank you for taking the time to do these videos, I learned so much from you . I’m 6 months in ileostomy for me her name is Stella we made friends very quickly, but my problem is my skin is so so sensitive so I switched to a closed pouch system and liners and that has helped but I still leak a lot at night I’m inverted so I have to use the convex flange, I was trained by my wonderful nurse with Hollister but I’m thinking of changing to coloplast. What do you think?

What I found is that to avoid leaks, you have to change your bag once every 24 hours and avoid letting it get full at night. and if its full, dont roll onto your back laying flat. the weight of the bag will pull the glue from your stomach
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 2 месяца назад
Once every 24h would be really expensive, and not necessary when you find the right appliance. I often get really lazy at home and my bag fills more than it should, but I've gotten consistent 7 to 10 day wear for years doing that. Night time is a challenge, especially if your bag fills with gas, which I find worse for leaks compared to just output. It can help to wear a support accessory to keep some of that weight off the wafer. Depending on your needs, there may be several options here.

thanks for a clear explanation of leaks. However, it didn't cover the reason I get leaks. I've had an ostomy for forty five years and for most of that time I could wear my appliance for 7 or more days. When I first had my surgery the enterstomatherpist pointed out that I had one small area that was somewhat indented and suggested that I put extra stomahesive in that area and that worked really well. Over the years, I gained weight and then I started to leak in that area and even when I tried to patch it up with more stomahesive, it seems that that little area is melting. If anyone has a solution for this I will be eternally grateful. Thanks!

Update - I am now waiting for my 3rd parastomal hernia repair (the last one was an epic fail because I developed a massive infected haematoma in my abdomen post-operatively, and the mesh didn’t attach - I was showing 3 signs of sepsis and they told my hubby if they hadn’t got my temperature down I’d have died...) - I have no idea when this operation will take place because here in the UK all elective surgery has been put on hold due to Covid. As happened before when my hernia got progressively worse, I am finding that I have to change the bag more often. When everything is going OK, I change it twice a week but it’s now becoming every other day on a more frequent basis. Eventually, if this isn’t dealt with, I could be changing it several times a day. Every single time I remove the bag, there is a bit of a leak under the flange and I’m getting more skin irritation. I have lost a great deal of weight over the past few years and there is quite a lot of loose flesh on my abdomen, making the area very unstable. I have been referred to a specialist colorectal surgeon who specialises in complex repairs and reconstructions, and he recommends a tummy tuck to tighten everything up (will I actually get a flat stomach after all these years - and free on the NHS?!! Lol!) The leak doesn’t penetrate beyond the edge of the flange because I always feel it and deal with it before it gets to that stage, but I always wear flange extenders just in case. As time goes on, I am becoming more aware of Kermit (my stoma) than usual. When things are going OK, I can forget all about him between visits to the loo. I have no idea when this problem is going to be fixed. I have used convex bags since the early days - not that Kermit is flush or retracted, but it was the only thing that fixed the continuous disastrous leaks - something to do with my shape, I suppose. I am finding that emptying the bag more frequently does help, but when I wake up in the morning the bag is always very full, and often quite ballooning too, and a couple of weeks ago I did have a blow-out but it didn’t make a mess because the flange extenders contained it - the flange had lifted up and poo was escaping and it was a huge mess to clear up when I got the bag off! Kermit’s sixth birthday will be at the end of this March. I’m pretty used to dealing with everything and haven’t needed to see the stoma nurse for ages. I use quite a lot of stoma powder because there is always skin irritation immediately around Kermit because of these leaks. I puff it on and brush it off with a dry wipe, and then dab with a barrier wipe, and repeat the process till I’ve built up a crust, and this really helps things heal up. I simply can’t get on with rings in any shape or form - they make the problem disastrously worse!
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 3 года назад
Thank you for the update. That sounds like a challenge, and I hope you find some relief from it soon. Regarding the leaks and needing to use stoma powder, do you ever have opportunities to simply leave the appliance off for a few hours at a time? Like, to give your skin some time to air out without having anything on it? I sometimes will do this, but I'll hang a bag over my waste to catch any output that comes out. Sometimes open air can have a very positive impact on the healing process, even if just for an hour at a time. But it does sound like these problems will persist until something surgical/medical is done. I do wish you a speedy resolution to this. Please keep me updated.
@ShoshiPlatypus
@ShoshiPlatypus 3 года назад
@@VeganOstomy Hi - thanks for your lovely reply, and for taking the interest! I have found that since going 100 percent whole-food plant-based, with the additional fibre in my diet, Kermit (my stoma) is more active and productive than he used to be. I used to have a good few hours in the middle of the day when he was conveniently asleep, and although he is still less active at that time, he’s usually producing a little. The area of skin irritation is small, fortunately. I try not to let the bag get too full before emptying, and have decided to change it three times a week as a routine, rather than waiting to see if that is necessary, by which time I can usually see the output and feel the irritation and know that a leak is in progress. I agree, the problems are going to persist until I get the operation, and goodness only knows when that will be. It wasn’t helped by the fact that the hospital where I’ve been referred to for this latest operation managed to lose me in its system for several months, and I’ve been having ongoing problems with them (also getting lost in their complaints system lol - who do you complain to about the complaints dept!!!) because I’m trying to make them see that I don’t think it’s fair that I should be put on the end of a nine-month waiting list when I’ve already been kept waiting 4 months because of their incompetence. They are conveniently blaming all delay on Covid, of course. Now that all elective surgery is effectively on hold, that hardly seems relevant now anyway. I am just glad that it’s only hernia/leaks problems that I am having to deal with. An online friend was diagnosed with rectal cancer 6 months before my colon cancer diagnosis, and she was incredibly supportive throughout my treatment, sharing the benefits of her experience which was pretty similar to my own initially, with the same chemo so she prepared me for the sort of side effects I’d have to deal with. Unfortunately her cancer spread and for the past six years she’s had a long battle with it, and sadly she died about 10 days ago. Cancer is such a brutal lottery, isn’t it - one loses the battle, and another is spared. We are all feeling incredibly shocked and saddened and I am also dealing with some fairly difficult emotions too - survivor’s guilt is a toughie. Anyway, I am very glad that I did so well and really don’t have too much to complain about. Hope you are keeping well!

@@ShoshiPlatypus That really is tragic. I'm sorry for your loss. Cancer has taken so many people around me, including online ostomy advocates that I've become friends with. I'd be totally frustrated if my hospital did what yours is doing! I would hope they'd fast-track you after their mishap with your files. A plant-based diet will include more "bulk" due to the added fiber, which, as you pointed out, can increase output. Over time, my body has adjusted to the point where I'm emptying my bag less frequently and waking up less during the evening. I hope that you experience the same shift as it does make things a little easier. I wish you better luck! Again, please let me know how things continue for you.

Great videos. I'm on my 2nd time with a temp ostomy and have had some issues with leaks shortly after applying new appliance (within 2 hours I'm leaking.) Typically it's out of the bottom toward the right side. I've measured, I have an eakins ring on the wafer to help seal especially since my output is very runny, but it still finds a way. I've had to call my ostomy nurse a couple times to come out and help. Its extremely frustrating when you go through all the prep just to have it leak so quickly
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 4 года назад
The eakin ring may not be able to help if you are getting blowouts like that. Its better suited for helping with liquid output. Has your nurse ever recommended a convex wafer? Also, keep an eye out for anything that might be putting pressure on the top half of your appliance, which could lift the bottom up and cause a leak. Things like an accessory belt being on too tight, your belt or pants, how you bend, sitting, etc. These can all potentially contribute to leaks.

at 4:00, you talk about overfilled pouches tugging at the seal. I use barrier extender (the translucent, skin-looking material), or any tape-like material that is easy on the skin. I take a small section and tape the top of the bag, just above the vent opening, to my abdominal skin. So, now an overfilled pouch tugs at the 'tape' and not the seal. TRY IT! But be careful with what you use on your skin. >:D
@VeganOstomy

I've done the same in the past to experiment, but what ends up happening (to me) is the tugging on the tape ends up causing skin irritation so I can't use that trick anymore but it can be helpful!

I have a leak starting in the same place from the wafer each time. Looking at the area from my side looking down it is on the left upper side. I have tried all kind of barriers. Paste around the wafer opening, strips, Hollister Barrier rings, and making a powder crust around stoma base. I use barrier curved strips. Paste around the wafer does not work. Adept made a horrible gummy paste on my skin that was difficult to remove. I never get no more than 3 days. I have not use one, but I read the Eskin ring is very good.. Hey Cleome, high-output bags should have some support via accessory belts, support bands, or ostomy wrap. Are you using anything to support the weight of the pouch? It's possible that it's getting heavy and tugging, which is causing the type of leak you describe.

I like your videos. I have problems with leakage every so often, not as bad now but my problem is that I have an ileo, it is bigger now than when I had surgery 16 years ago, but it shrinks to its original size occasionally and pancakes which is a disaster. I haven't found any product that helps with this. I have to wear convexity due to the stoma shrinking and have developed a pressure ulcer right where the stoma opening points downward. Usually this will go away if I switch to a normal flat wafer for a little while. I wish I could use a flat wafer all the time but if my stool is thick (which causes my stoma to retract) it goes underneath everything, even barrier rings. Do you know of anything that can help?

Sorry to hear about your troubles. There are many types of convex wafers - some that are stiff and others are are quite flexible and soft. Have you tried several types? Also, the pressure sores are more likely to happen if you are using an accessory belt too tight. I had a similar problem with my stoma retracting when my output is really thick - this was actually one of the first indications that I was heading towards a blockage. If I drink enough throughout the day this never happens to me. Do you feel like there's a pattern that you can predict and hopefully alter to get your output to be less difficult?

It holds the bag on snug and stops the wear and tear on the wafer. I always got leaks from the top of the wafer in that thin plastic that holds the firm plastic connection ring to the wafer itself. I use Hollister stuff because that's all I know from leaving the hospital but the belt is made by Adapt (which I see is Hollister). The ref # is 7299 and the upc is10075 11478. You start on a low fodmap then gradually introduce items and find which is causing you to ballon. I hope this helps it helped me loads. But commons sense too such as foods we can’t break down. The whole idea of FODMAP is avoiding the chemicals we can’t break down so legumes skins pips seeds etc theese are horrific for ballooning. For what it's worth, Kirt, I eat the foods (legumes, skins, seeds, etc.) daily and in large quantities and ballooning is rarely an issue. Our bodies need to adjust to the increased fiber intake and for most people that can take several weeks or longer. A low FODMAP diet does have benefits, but I personally wouldn't restrict otherwise healthy foods because of gas (knowing it usually just takes some time for our gut microbes to adjust).

Hi, how to prevent leakage during exercise, like bending my belly?
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy Год назад
Appliance choice may be important here. Some products have more flexible wafers that would allow you to bend more easily. You might also have better luck going with a larger baseplate (wafer) or a smaller one. I've had pretty good luck with a 1pc Hollister while exercising, cycling, etc., and I find that the larger wafer on that product + the fact that it's a 1pc, seems to help.

I'm sorry to hear about that. Trying to replace discontinued products that have worked is very frustrating. It looks like the Softflex is different from what I've used, but I wonder if your mom might have better luck with the Coloplast Sensura Mio products, which also have a soft, flexible wafer. The best you can do is sample product until something comes close (or is better than) what she was using. In the meantime, I would check with other suppliers to see if the product can still be purchased until they are no longer available. That might buy your mom some time to sample other products. Best of luck!

Vegan Ostomy, my fistula is very high output, seen your videos which are great, but noting helps, output can go from thick to thin in an instant use crusting technique, everything, stuff gets on same patch of skin all the time, can't see why its happening stoma nurse can't help either. It's a retracted hole, use eakin barrier ring, large salts ring, Braun convex 2 piece, coloplast tape, plus coloplast adhesive remover, barrier powder cavilon barrier spray, crusting not helping, sometimes takes over an hour to get new bag on stuff keeps coming out clean ready with stuff, whoosh eruption, start all over, might get over a day without change usually 2 times a day, am in Ireland so all supplies are on medical card, so don't have to pay for anything but that's not the point would rather not have to change so often.diet never changes. Is this a purposely created mucus fistula or is it a fistula caused by illness? The latter would need to be treated medically first. If it's a mucus fistula, you may be able to find a special appliance designed just for it. Unfortunately, the tips in my videos only apply to regular stomas and not fustulas.

Vegan Ostomy is not a mucus fistula, caused by illness, had a smaller one ,hap op, but then this one opened much bigger, seems noting can be done with it medically, any operation would be very risky for me ,had lots of compilations and infections after last op, it was unreal, wouldn't go through that again, as my chances of survival would be slim, and more fistulas could open, heard of people with multiple ones, nightmare stuff, have to see stoma nurse again, already changed bag 3 times today, its unreal.

I'm really sorry to hear that. It really does need to be addressed by a certified wound and ostomy nurse. My experience with a mucus fistula was rather short and not bothersome, but it sounds like a radical plan needs to be made before things are more manageable for you. Best of luck!

I'm almost 3 months out of surgery for my ileostomy and I've been struggling with alternating prolapses and retractions, especially at night. My stoma doesn't retract all the time (it's generally "normal" during the day, but then loses its shape and firmness, becomes "mushy" and retracts or prolapses out of the blue.... This happens as often as every day or once a week) but it does so sporadically, which then causes leaks (usually when I'm asleep). Would a convex flange work best in this case? My concern is if using a convex flange would cause more prolapses, since I am prone to those too,and if it would help when the stoma randomly retracts? Can these be used on a stoma that doesn't stay retracted? My doctor wasn't any help with this, so any advice anyone has would be very helpful!
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 6 лет назад
+Veggie Bee That sounds really frustrating. I would request a stoma nurse to have a look. Some people wear convex appliances with protruding stomas, but I've never heard of them being worn with a prolapsed stoma. It may help with the retraction, but a stoma nurse should be able to tell you whether it's OK to use one while prolapsed. Good luck!

Hi there. I had the exact issue and I found that when it would prolapse it would press against the cut ring of the bag and would hurt crazy making my eyes water. I spoke with my surgeon. I myself have just suffered a Panproctocolectomy “full removal” I’m fine now I had 2 month in hospital with a month in icu it was a very aggressive surgury lasting 16hrs. But on the good side my surgeon was able to make me a much smaller Stoma and restrict it !! Meaning it can’t prolapse no more I am so so happy about this as it was hurting me night and day! Speak with your surgeon if it’s a permanent ileostomy then your surgeon should be able to restrict it for you ! Good luck

My leaks come as a result of a dip on the right side of my stoma, about the size of dime. While I apply a piece of the seal in the dip, it doesn’t always work. That’s where my problem lies. The output finds its way into my skin (no outside leak) irritating it and causing burning. When this occurs, I require a change every 2 days. When it works it’s wonderful as I can get 3 days before changing. I seem to get a run of good luck, but it doesn’t last. I use only half of a Salts mouldable seal to create a full seal as I find the full seal is too thick. I have no clue if my explanation is clear or not, but I sure hope you may have a solution for me. ET nurses have unfortunately not been unable to find the magic for me. Almost forgot - the fact that I have a hernia on the left side probably doesn’t help matters. Thank you ☺️
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 4 года назад
Hey, Margaret. That sounds frustrating for sure. Are you currently wearing a flat or convex appliance? Have you tried other brands of seals or stoma paste to see if any work better for you? Sometimes you'll notice a dramatic difference between two of the same products from different brands. It might be worth exploring. Good luck!

My stoma is very close to my belly button, which causes leaks in the belly button since the skin is not flat. I've tried covering my belly button opening with tegaderm and the barrier strips. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Any tips on how to make my bell button hole a flat surface?
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 3 года назад
Hi Aisha, how close is close? I had difficulties after my surgery because a lot of my stitches were very close to the stoma, so I think you're having the same type of challenge. Do you use or have you tried convex wafers?
@aishaliane
@aishaliane 3 года назад
@@VeganOstomy The stoma is about 1.5 inches from the belly button, far enough for me to use a barrier ring/ paste around the hole of the ostomy bag, but too close for the entire wafer to lie flat. I was sent 1 convex wafer in a sample package, but have not tried it.
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy 3 года назад
What I would do in that case, is to cut the hole in the wafer slightly offset from center so that it is placed further away from the belly button. Some will still be over the belly button but it shouldn't be any part of the wafer that would be designed to contain leaks. This also can depend on the type of wafer as some wafers have a full hydrocoloid backing while others like Hollister have a hydrocoloid center and then a tape border around that period it is pretty easy to do this with the Hollister wafers with that design. If for added security, I tended to place some kind of wafer extender or even medical tape on the half of the wafer that is over the belly button. I don't think there would be any advantage to try to fill the belly button with anything, since you should still have enough of an area to adhere the wafer to your skin, including using wafer extenders. I hope that makes sense. 😬

Very very useful information.this query is on behalf of my husband.in your video I noticed that once you remove the layer from the wafer you directly put it on the stoma whereas I have been asked to put brava paste round the cutting and the place it on the stoma.is it correct.

I don't use stoma paste, but the general application is to put the past on the wafer (around the hole for the stoma) and then put the wafer on your skin. You can also put the paste on your skin first, although this isn't as common. In reality, the phrase "whatever works" often applies with stoma management :) Thank you for watching.

I think it's been almost 3 weeks if not already 3½ since I last changed my appliance because this time it's just really holding on tight... Is leaving it on that long at all dangerous?
@VeganOstomy
@VeganOstomy Год назад
What was the longest you've had it on for, or what's your average? The biggest risk I can think of, assuming your skin is otherwise healthy, and you have no leaks, is fungal/yeast/bacterial infection. If you find that it's getting itchy under or around your wafer, I'd swap that appliance out. Keep my posted! 3 weeks is amazing! When I push 7 to 10 days, the edge of my wafer simply loses its adhesion, and I'm forced to change the wafer.

+Dianna Schafer Hi Dianna. The traditional approach is to use a convex wafer, but this should be under the guidance of your stoma nurse since convex wafers can cause complications (like pressure ulcers) if not used properly. The good news is that there are many styles, depths, and firmness to convex products, so you should be able to find one that works for you. Good luck.

+Vegan Ostomy I have a bit of an innie on my ileostomy on the left side and unfortunately am in Chile for work. The lack of stoma product options here is horrible. I have never found a convex product and can only find convatec flat wafers. On top of that, I love to swim, which tends to loosen the seal a bit (although I have never leaked in a pool, thankfully, even after years), and end up having to change my appliance every 2-3 days. Sitting here right now with a leak bunched up with toilet paper between my belt and wafer and waiting for the work day to end because it's a high output time of day so attempting to change it in the bathroom here at work would just be a disaster. Still, this is way better than the alternative of the days of my Crohn's where I went from being fine to suddenly realizing that I had about 30 seconds to make it to a bathroom.
