Should have said earlier, happy new year! I'm getting bac6to fishing after a 20yr hiatus, still using my old OTG equipment, Zzipplex 2500GTX 13ft and a Shimano Aerlex 8000. Watching your videos refreshes my memories of what to do. Thanks. I do appreciate these tutorials. And if your ever home I do hope to catch you on the beach.
I need to know why youtube recommend all the other shite, only to find your channel 2 weeks ago.. Just the best keep em coming... Top man only here for the craic.
Only discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago! Binge watched! Awesome stuff keep them coming. Tried braid for the first time this year….didn’t end well! Mono leaders!! Makes perfect sense what u have just put up! Gonna have to buy more braid now! Burnt the last lot in disgust!
Argghghg if only I saw this last week. I’m usually on 80lb braid straight through. Switched to 50lb braid and an 80lb mono leader with lots of wraps around spool like a multi lol . Just couldn’t stop cracking off when I went out for a cast. Thanks Billy, fantastic advice as ever
Ha! I thoroughly enjoyed the new 'How too vid' Billy. I've a wee fixed spool reel I use for a spot of spinning, I've always been stuck in the multiplier groove but I'm having a look on ebay for a one similar or the same as yours for when I get back into fishing around February (I hope). I'm sure your casting tips will get me off to a flying start, zoom, zoom, zoom. Keep up the good work!! Ps, Poor Mr Wiffels 😢😢 give my best to the Mrs W. She'll not stay single long😉
Mate I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your videos since coming across them. You know your stuff mate! I’ve two months in Odense coming up for work in a dry dock, gonna have a cast out
So glad you introduced us to Mrs Wiffles. Lovely girl she is too. Nice moment of reflection for Mr W also. A video on making the now famous wiffle squid 🦑 would be appreciated. Love ya work. 👍🎄
I can’t get enough of your videos, incredibly informative and you make me laugh at the same time 😂🐟🎣. I haven’t converted to fixed spools, yet 🤔. Keep up the good work and have a great Christmas 👍. And commiserations on Mr Wiffels 😂😂😂😂
Hi Kevin, glad you like the vids brother. I Use multiplaers mostly, but fixed spools have there please too. Marry Christmas to you and yours, fish on 👍😁
All hail Billy fishing!!! In prep for a Norway trip in April I've binge watched all your vids, my living room looks like a cross between a tackle shop and a rig builders dustbin. My secret weapon a sweatshirt with " I'm a ging er fish head" on the front of it and that will guarantee plenty of fish. 👍👍
Thanks Billy. At the moment where I fish I class it a good session if I get a bite. So need some fish action otherwise it'll be ballroom dancing or tiddlywinks for me. 😁😁
@@Billyfishing_watch Somerset mate, the Bristol channel is only 10 minutes from home but it's fishing really slow where I fish at the moment. I normally fish an estuary but the tides are quite low at the moment and I don't think there's enough depth over the beach. Odd flounder, strap and whiting showing but not in any numbers. Easterly winds over the next week or so and really cold so that'll stop things dead but hey, you have to be in it to win it. Roll on Norway and if not then there's always Somerset cider. 😁😁
Hi brother Billy great video as always. I have got my fishing mate on to your videos he watched the one on pumping blowlug last Sunday. On Monday made his own pump Tuesday went out after blowlug got 30 now wants me to take him to get some black lug . Looks like you have a new follower. By the way he loves fishing for DABS as well. Cheers brother have a good Christmas and happy new year.
Thanks Tony. It works fantastic well, the best demonstration of the leader knot is in this video. It was filmed inside unlike the rest of the video you can't miss it. just follow the link 👍😁
Have never been able to get on with fixed spools for beach fishing. A short plop out 40-50yds with a bass rod, or when spinning. But casting 5oz+ leads? I just cant cast one smoothly to save my life 😄😄 Am definitely going to have more practice to it though, so can make a confident switch over to using braid for the sensitivity and lower tide resistance
Hi KF, a multiplier man you are 👍 They are big reel the long casts. But if it is done right, they work well. But the multiplier is my favourite, thanks Brother 👍😁
I have fished for nearly 30 years, always been a Multi man but recently switched over to fixed spool, this video is fantastic, great explanations and content is spot on. Keep the videos coming big lad 💪🏼
@@Billyfishing_watch it certainly is buddy, the videos with your lad, outstanding. Sent them to my youngest and now he's chomping at the bit to get out on the beach. Such a refreshing channel man, great work 💪🏼
Seen Finishing in the UK give you a mention the other day mate they were using the gripper leads that you make they made a load there self love the videos bud 👊👍
Great content. I was freshwater fishing most of my life, fell in love with saltwater fishing. I'm in Southern California so pier fishing was the start...not thrilled with pier fishing so I moved to surf fishing...addicted now. Where I'm at, limited to perch and halibut for the most part so I moved on now to Leopard Sharks, Shovelnose and Rays. Your vids are helping me with the casting...my biggest problem now is sinkers. If I chunk an 8 oz pyramid sinker out 75 meters, it will move laterally about 50-75 meters in 15-20 minutes. Sputniks grapple massive kelp we have which sucks so I've ordered some Hatteras sinkers. Wish me luck!
Billy, you explained everything well about the shock leader for a coil with a fixed spool. What kind of shock leader to put on a multiplier reel ? Please explain what the difference will be .
Couple of tips there have helped me Billy. I used to put too much leader on the reel and did indeed end up with braid wrapped around the rod after some casts. Luckily no snap-offs. Keep hands high is another good point as it adds more leverage to the cast enabling a further throw with the same effort. The only issue with off the ground casting is the tackle needed. When using a regular clipped down rig to the lead or Gemini (Other brands are available haha) rig clip, the hook will fall out. To remedy this you have to use a more expensive clip method such as a Gemini Splash Down.
Another good Craic with Brother Billy! Some great info there Billy. Not sure how it would work with Clipped down rigs? I only use fixed spool and have never tried casting with the reel down - all of my rods have fixed reel seats. Merry Christmas to you & yours mate - stay safe & well! 😁😁👍👍
Hi Trampster, glad you like it , there are lots of bait clips on the market for otg casting. If the rod is a stiff one you cast it like that, but if not it's just standard reel position, thanks Brother 👍😊
Tusind tak Billy! I need to get practicing casting with a new 4.5m rod (and Penn Affinity 7000) and only recently rediscovered my love of fishing. I grew up in South Africa (where I did some fishing) so this should be a doddle. 😜
@@Billyfishing_watch I was young, dumb and full of... London IS hard to fish - have you tried getting a 4.5m rod on the bus? 😆 Kent and south coasts are about 2hrs away so its not too bad. Love gettiong out of the city.
Just came across your channel a week or two ago. Really enjoying working my way through your playlist, it's a brilliant channel. Do you live in Norway now or travel regularly? Some of your beach fishing videos seem like they're Ireland/Britain but the next minute you're on a jetty in Scandinavia?? Nonetheless, great stuff that is inspiring, funny and educational👍 Love it!!
@@Billyfishing_watch Just another quicky, you're the first person I've seen using gimbal/butt rest on the shore. Is that a comfort thing or a bad back thing. I use one on charter boats, wreck/heavy fishing because I find it easier on the back. Never ever thought about it on the shore but I suppose the same principals apply??
Hi Peter. I am not exactly sure what you mean, the group wires on the lead weights fold back automatically when you pull on them. They're held in place by the tension of The wire.
Great content again. I am lkiing the videos which are full of tips..I use fixed spool with 40lb braid and 80lb mono shockleader. Would you recomend to ditch the mono leader and repalce it with braid say 4 strand braid. I am just thinking about fishing for Tope an dsharks where their skin could cut through the braid. Also with the same casting style would 20lb mono to 80-lb shockleader cast as far as tyhe braid set up?
High Gavin. Change the mono leader to braid, just make your rigs longer. 40 lb mainline is just right, the braid setup will cast further. Thanks Brother 👍😁
morning, new to the channel and must say it's as entertaining as it is informative. A question about the leaders, fishing in mostly mixed or rough ground are you better still having a mono leader, and sacrificing a bit of distance? Cheers.
No, if you have any worries just make your rigs a little longer and go for a heavier braid leader 120 to 130lbs. I fish rough ground like you wouldn't believe and never have any trouble. if you use mono, and power cast you will get wind knots. Thanks brother 👍
Hi I'm not sure what you mean by the eyelets facing up! But remember this is for braided fishing line, with a braid leader. There's many advantages, one is. it acts like a counter weigh and will improve your strength. 👍
Hey Billy Can i ask witch knot you use tying braid leader to braid line.I had a couple of breakoffs with mono Leader to braid line, you might have explained why, in this vid, thanks Chears Niels
Hi Billy, all good points. Obviously OTG won't work for any clipped down rigs but I need a Mr Sniffles to practice my casting. I do use 40lb braid with 60lb mono with an FG knot and no problems with line crack off. I do sometimes see the mono slowing down the cast causing a few main line issues from time to time. Will certainly look at braid but does the braid shock leader get easily damaged on rocks, barnacles etc? I know many who use tapered mono with braid too. What knots would you recommend from main line to leader and leader to clip? Great video 👍 tight lines and have a good Christmas and New year.
Hi Paul, is your reel hi or low on the rod, I have my own leader knot, I think the fg is too big, and hard to tie in bad weather. I have no problems with the rocks, with the 4 strand leader . For the rig link , I use a Palamar knot👍
@@Billyfishing_watch High reel seat. I can't move it. Having chased bass on lures using much lighter gear I can tie an FG no problem. Though the advantage of using fixed spools is carrying spares with leaders tides on. Surprised you think the FG is big. If I wasn't using that I would use the uni to uni knot.
If the reel is low the mono is no good for leader on stiff rods, fixed spools are handy, with spar spools. Do you use a long cast spool, and a continental rod?
@@Billyfishing_watch 13' Penn Rampage II built for braid and mono. Medium action and didn't cost the earth. Penn Surf Blaster 7000. However will try a braided shock leader and will upgrade the rods at some point. Loving the braid so can't see myself going to multies any time soon.
I have been experimenting and the south african way is two wraps of leader line on the real.. is it recomended 2 wraps of braided leader on the reel, through the guides plus the length of the drop you use instead of 2 wraps of braided leader on the reel and full length of rod??
@Billyfishing_watch thanks Billy..I'm also using a bionic finger with a grinder and once you get the timing of release right it's a great little bit of kit!
Hi Billy I'm looking a bit of advice please. I have just purchased some circle hooks, based on ur findings of them causing less damage, to try on flats and dogs. Do u use worms on them or simply use fish or squid. There shape obviously doesnt seem to lend itself to threading a lug on to them. Hope u have a great Christmas and a great new year. Cheers
I haven’t watch all your videos so you may have addressed this. You are right handed but you put your left hand at the reel and right hand above even though there is a lot of rod below the reel. I guess you have a really long rod and want to space your hands pretty far apart. I have Penn Carnage III 11’ rod with a Penn Spinfisher 6500 reel. If I do it your way I’ll run out of rod length. Cheers from the Texas Gulf Coast
Hi TX. Yes, that rod is 15 ft long. But that not the all of the story. I will make a video about it soon. But everything else in the video, you can apply why to your fishing. Thanks Brother 👍😁
I thought my 0.70 mm mono leader was the way to go on my braided main line - good to know. It rattles annoyingly when practicing my casting. It's a timebomb waiting to go off...
@@Billyfishing_watchinteresting thanks for replying, never seen a system like that. my current system is similar to Phill Dale's from Skarnsundet fishing (35lb braid mainline via double uni to 80lb braid a few meters as a carrying leader for a smoother transition and then 2-3 rod lengths 80lb mono shock leader which youre casting from).
Billy, want to ask what may be a dumb question. Are you left handed? Or is using your left hand down on the reel the correct way to distance cast for right handed people?
Hi Chuck. I am sure I explained in the video, but this is why. Yes I'm right handed, but these rod are stiff. And if the reel is high up, rod will not load up properly. And not cast will. Also having the reel low down, the reel becomes a counter wight, that improves your strength. Hope this helps, thanks Brother 👍😁
@@Billyfishing_watch I did find where you explained that in another video after I posted question. Thanks for responding. Really like your videos. Easy to follow.👍
4strand is cheaper, but 8 strand casts much better on that type of spool. But if you use a long cast spool, you could use 10 or 15lb 4 strand. Hope this helps out 👍👌
Hi kindly advise for good shop for fishing gear for international shipping in uk. I want shakespeare seat box with full accessories from delmitech. Thanks
