Solo ocean racing, and the types of boats people use for them, is a world apart from Arabella and our crew here. We're getting ready for our own big adventure in 2025-climbing huge walls in Baffin Island-and see similar care and consideration applied to the preparations of a Hawaiian sailor we met in Portland, Maine. Hear his story here and take a tour of the boat with Steve and Satchel.
A boat sinks at the dock in a big blow, Robin docks Arabella, we arrive in Rockland, Maine, and we finally get the final three pins we need to complete the pinrails. Thanks Ron!

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Content of Steve's videos going forward. 30% sailing and fixing stuff, 40% socializing, 10% cooking. Then again more socializing with sailing folks and the visits to marinas, about 20% of that. I enjoyed the build from day one, glad it's done. Now some traveling vids to watch. Thanks Steve.

Dear Steve and and all others who worked on Arabella, It’s really a pleasure to see Arabella sailing over the ocean and even with som tough weather she seems to be very stable what’s amazing for such a relatively small boat. Willeke and I still hope to see her sailing with full sails including a spinnaker because that must be awesome to watch. We wish you and others who are joining a trip with Arabella a safe journey and look forward to your next vlog plus we send you love from the Netherlands

Top Roping sport routes is pretty chill as rock climbing goes. You can just focus on the climb itself with little fear since any fall off the route is only a few inches to a few feet at most. There are no whippers as long as the belayer is on point and hasn't given you tons of slack.

Waking up to a foggy morning is wonderfully surreal, particularly after a stormy night. It is usually so quiet you can hear a pin drop a mile away. I always was reluctant to break the silence the motor to get under way. I could easily get hypnotized with the wake rippling away, adding the first texture to the still waters. Slowly earth wakes up, and before you know it, it is back to normal conditions.

All have been nicely done vids but the sailing episodes are simply something special. I'm not even a sailboat guy (don't like all the aslant stuff) but I'm nevertheless totally fascinated by Arabella's journey. I can only add to so many other people's admiration for the project, and the videos of the sailing off the New England coast. But, while I'm here, please can we get you to reconsider the guard-rails. You saw them, as absolutely standard, on the ocean racer. Those guys are so well adapted to the motion of a boat in rough weather, but most of us are not, even if we sail a lot. I can guarantee you will slip and fall, thrown off balance, at some point. You will probably not survive in cold water unless you have a strong crew able to do an instant MOB manoeuvre. We don't want to lose you!!
@AcornToArabella
@AcornToArabella 8 месяцев назад
Most of those are put on for insurance or even for race rule purposes, and aren’t at a height that is particularly useful. We have jacklines higher on the to-do list than lifelines, but both are coming. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching! -Anne

I realize the two boats are worlds apart, but what Sailor doesn't love all the variations and lore ? The sails are 'Elvstrom'. If you are not already aware of Paul Elvstrom's iconic legacy, then check him out on a 'deep dive' . Elvstrom was a visionary ! As a kid I had the finest dinghy racing PFD (an Elvstrom) and the now out of print Elvvstrom ratchet blocks were on par if not superior to the Harkens. I could go on and on from that start but will leave the exploration of his legacy to you :)

I just started watching and had to pause. Plz, plz, plz put end caps / chamfered blocks on both ends of the jib sheet tracks. I installed and left them off for a few weeks until I almost laid the ball of my foot wide open. A millimeter lower on my step and I would have really done a job on myself !

I am enjoying the side story of the Steve/Robyn dynamic. It takes a strong man to keep up with a strong woman. When 2 strong people unite? They become more powerful than 4. And that is only the start - strong people are attracted into a strong team, and with each who joins? The person-power of community advances exponentially. And much can be achieved.

If anyone wants to read about the first single-hand , non-stop, round the world race, the Golden Globe, there is a brilliantly written book called A Voyage of Madmen, by Peter Nichols. A hand-built boat designed by Atkin won the race, but it was a truly bizarre event, and a fascinating read.
