This is exactly the video I was looking for. Someone who knows about the previous editions of Akira and can compare them to these new editions. Love to hear they are good quality, can't wait to get them and experience this saga for the first time. Hope they amaze me as much as Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell did!

This is tempting. Even though I own the Dark Horse versions, this package had so much passion put into it. Plus the Akira Art Club book has been on my list for years.

Glad to see you're still putting up videos. I can imagine getting quality interviews with artists and writers from comics must be tough and this being a passion project for you, but please keep it up. It's worth the wait fro what you bring to the table.

Thanks! Scheduling is always tough. The channel has taken a back seat recently to some other projects (and of course life). I’ve been working on a graphic novel of my own and that’s been taking up a lot of the creative energy. Though I have a few unreleased interviews from a while ago that I keep meaning to take some time to post.

I waited a very long time for a set like this. I'm relieved to finally have it. It's amazing that it's taken until now for a 'perfect' English edition of Akira to be published! Watched this video having appreciated your youtube content for a few years already. Glad we're like-minded on this subject. Although, I much prefer the black & white pages; as you said, the colour can obscure the linework and, at worst, 'dictate' your perception of the story, if that makes sense at all.
@thecomicarchive
@thecomicarchive 6 лет назад
+YummyBananaFish I’m happy to hear you’ve been following the channel! This is probably the edition I’m going to turn to whenever I want to revisit this story. Otomo’s linework is just too beautiful to hide. And as much as I love the color it does hide some of it.

Thank you for this review and comparison! Watching this convinced me to buy the whole 38 volume Marvel/Epic set in color and it was an incredible read! Your custom hardcover is gorgeous but even though I would love it in that format the original tpb are quite pricey and rare now. Watching this again has me contemplating getting the 35th anniversary and re-reading in b&w!

Glad to hear you got a set of the color editions. They’re hard to find. I really love the job that Steve Oliff did on them. I don’t know that I would bind the issues if I were doing it today. They’ve gotten so valuable. I will say that the black and white hardcovers are really nice and give a different vibe. You can see all the detail otomo put into every page much more easily in black and white.

I understand the value in having the hand-drawn original sound effects. This looks like a fantastic edition for collectors or those who already know the story. My question is that if this is my first time reading it, would I be missing something in terms of experience or understanding because of the untranslated sound effects? Would the paperback Kodansha version be better?

the awesome thing with the kodansha releases is that they add explanations to effects and always have translation notes at the end of chapters/volumes to help you understand why it was translated the way it was and how the author is thinking.

Hello my friend, I have a question about this edition. I am interested in buying it, but I read in a review that the sound effects, the signs and the onomatopoeias are not translated, that is, the kanji is only in Japanese. Is this true?. This is not usually a problem for me, but I find it hard to imagine that even on the side of the kanji or on the edge of the margin do not have small translations like "Crack" "Booom" "Whaaaa". I hope you can answer my question, because it is definitive to know if I buy this collection or I am left with the editorial Panini (The publisher in Mexico), which, although it is in soft paste, does have these little translations.
@thecomicarchive
@thecomicarchive 5 лет назад
The sound effects in the kodansha 35th anniversary hardcovers are not translated. There is a translation of them but it’s in the back of the book.
@luulol
@luulol 5 лет назад
@@thecomicarchive Thank you so much for reply my comment. I was thinking in not buying this edition, i was thinking "Maybe the immersion is interrupted from the constant necessity of going to the last pages to see the translation". But my girlfrend told me "Why you dont take some pictures of the page where the translations are and you keep your cellphone at hand to give it a quick look whenever you need it?" ... Yeah it was so simple, your review and my GF advice convinced me to buy the hardcover version.
@thecomicarchive
@thecomicarchive 5 лет назад
I was a little worried about the sound effects. But honestly as you’re reading it a lot of them are obvious. For instance a lot of the first volume is motorcycles revving their engines. You might not need the sound effect translation to understand.

The Comic Archive I see that you chose the 12” by 24” brodart book cover, but on the video in the scene where you show volume one, it doesn’t seem like the cover has been wrapped completely. Would that mean getting the 12” by 26” size would be better? Do let me know your suggestion as I’m looking to get these covers for my box set as well. Additionally, you did not wrap the Akira club boom did you? Haha
@thecomicarchive
@thecomicarchive 3 года назад
I always go with the 12x24. They cover most of my books very well. I’m not too worried about the inner flap but if you want to be certain getting a longer one would fix that. And I did put one on Akira club. It was a tough choice though since it blocks the cut out.

+Gun_Damn_IT They come with these handy perforations along the top, which work perfectly for the deluxe hardcovers out there. The Akira books are a little smaller than the perforations so I use a yard stick to measure out the 10.25” height of the dust jackets and fold that down. I don’t cut anything, just folding. Other than that they are pretty easy to use without modifying them. I also do a little tape to hold the clear acetate over the paper.

For me I think it may be best to just grab the paper back. I watched the movie but haven't read the manga and I couldn't imagine reading it without the onomatopoeia. The onomatopoeias really bring in the immersion for me. I'm also not very sure I care to keep it forever or anything I just want to read it. The colored version doesn't really attract me either from some over the pages I've seen they definitely are using Marvel like color pallettes and styling which for me takes away from the art more than add to it. I'm not a fan of how marvel comics look.

ARGH, it sucks for me that there's no one decent version of the Akira manga. The 35th Anniversary one would be perfect for me... if they had translated the sounds. What's the point of even doing a translation into English if you don't translate such an important part of it. I'd buy the earlier releases, but flipping all of the drawings to it can be read from left to right sucks just as much! All I want is a version that reads from right to left like the original, but is fully translated into English! Is that too much to ask for!!!!
