Ott’s Garage | How To Build A Crankbait Part 3

Final part on building a Crankbait. This is a lot on the assembly side of it all. Also the final test of these baits that we’ve built along the way. There are a lot of steps to making a Crankbait as you’ve seen. There are some things I wasn’t able to get into these videos or they would have been a week long!

Ott ,I use a first grader’s pencil with the big rubber eraser to hold small parts when routing ,I also drill two small holes in the wiggle lip so the glue has something to grab ahold of

Two questions: what size wire are you using for the hook eyes and what brand glue do you usually use for crankbaits?

Ott, thank you for these videos on making a crankbait. Could you tell us what kind of paint and finish you use on your crankbaits? Maybe show us a couple of your finished baits.🐟🎣

Great tip for you OTT , you can shave the weight with a knife so you can make any bait a suspender/slow float after you’ve done testing

Monel wire would probably work very well, a little stiffer and stronger than copper but still easily bendable. We use it a lot in saltwater fishing. Wire harnesses are standard for bigger saltwater hard baits, even if the bait falls apart around the harness you’ll still catch the fish cause you’ve got wire going from the line tie to the hook. Big tuna poppers and things like yo-zuri bonitas all have full harnesses.

Really enjoying these videos! Im impressed sir! I do my own jigs, spinnerbaits, and buzzbait but have never tried the crankbaits. It looks like a lot of fun! Keep up the awesome work, and i wish you the best of luck with the remainder of the season from here in Rutledge, TN!

Awesome series this is Ott! I was always nervous using single line ties and hook hangers on my balsa bait's that it wouldn't be strong enough and always did through wire... but this may have made it easier and faster for me,god bless you and your family Ott!!

great videos Otter! Are baits you made featured in this video closely similar to Mr Knuckles "Petey"? From these videos I know now "how to" the hook hangers and line tie. I can now replicate the "Petey". I am down to only 6 of them.

how does the balsa not get messed up from testing bait in water and soaking water up I was asking that on last video was just wondering if the amount of time u test baits it not enough to damage wood.

Great video… A lipless crank related question - I’ve had people suggest when fishing a lipless through grass (Florida heavy) to remove the front hook. I always thought it would run weird and hook up ratio would sacrifice. Thoughts??
