It's pronounced "By-Ward", named after Colonel John By, and the original name of the city was "Bytown". And, Rideau is pronounced "re-doe". --A native Ottawan.
@@bespincloudcity7893 Yes, for those native to Ottawa it sometimes feels like we are on the doorstep of the Christian's Hell, but having also lived in New York City, and North Carolina, Ottawa gets off easy!
I'm an outsider, and I find Ottawa very boring (even the fun stuff becomes repetitively boring), lonely (anti-social, not welcoming that much), too cold for too long, too governmental, etc.. At the sametime, I am thankful to God for being accepted, cared, and sheltered for here, due to the economic crisis, war, joblessness, very high prices, lack of insurance over somethings, etc. back home that my parents had to endure. My brother got arrested for defending himself against a bunch of thieves with knives in the Ottawa city area. The cops allowed the thieves to escape and accused my brother of the crimes, even though there was evidence that he was stabbed three or more times. The justice system here sucks. The police correctional jail place in Innes is much worse than the one's in America. They treat the criminals and parents of the victims with abuse verbally, physically, etc. in many ways. Harrasment, rudeness, etc. At the court, the Crown attorney only cares about the public and gives cares little about the falsely accused criminal. He even ignored the past crime scene and defended the thieves. He was against my brother ans mother and myself. The lawyer(s) only care about money, they don't care about if you get out or not. That just goes to show you how corrupt the criminal justice system is in Ottawa.
Happy April Fool's Day!! Found this one in the lost time capsule of travel videos I had never put out and thought it might be fun for a Way Back Wednesday & April Fools Day video. I am glad that I now make sure I know how to pronounce things and I actually know how to count to 5. Notice there are only 4 "hates" I hope you all get a chuckle out of this Historic travel time capsule.
For April Fool's you should do the "Five Love and Hates of Ottawa" and you should do it in Ottawa . .. Ottawa Illinois - just a short drive to the State Prison in Joliet, Not only do that have a Walmart that have a Walmart Superstore, over 14 people have died in the great Ottawa Illinois vicinity from skydiving as the area is a favorite landing spot of skydivers.
@@dennislewis4472 I used to say the same thing about Ottawa, then I moved to Montreal and it was much worse. Came back to Ottawa and everything seemed friendlier and more civilized
The biggest thing about Ottawa I would say is to go during an event. The best part about Ottawa is that the city is great for everyday life for the locals, but as a result there isn't the constant hustle and bustle of Montreal or Toronto. The financial district shuts down at night so make sure to go when there's something to do and not just a random time of the year - and even get out to the Glebe, Little Italy or Chinatown they have great food and shops
lol, “Ottawa is a ghost town with tourists” is how we locals feel all the time. no night life, all government workers coming in and out of the suburbs.
I live in Montreal and I like Ottawa! I'm not a 30 yr old so I could care less about the nightlife. Also, I never found Byward Market to be a sketchy area.
I was born, raised and live in Ottawa. so yeah if your going to ottawa for vacation uhhh i hope your a fan of museums cuz nothing much else to do here. The Byward market is fun along with Lansdown but other than that it doesnt have the snazz of Toronto although the Canal and the rideau falls are amazing for photography.
Love these videos . The negatives are interesting- nightlife- fair enough before COVID, you needed to know where to go, it’s exist but doesn’t jump out at you like Toronto or Montreal. In comparison to Toronto, Ottawa is very clean downtown, and improving. It is a government town, can’t disagree, but doesn’t mean it’s expensive - don’t go to tourist traps (Byward Market) and you’ll find the prices drop fast and quality is good. Ottawa has extreme cold (-40 Celsius at worst in winter) and extreme heat (40 at worst in summer). So dress warm in winter, but pack light for summer. The Rideau Canal is worlds largest skating rink and very fun to skate into the downtown of a capital city. Ottawa’s proximity to nature is probably underrated, yes Gatineau Park is very close but lots of great hiking only about an hour away from downtown on the Ontario side a well. We like to think we are friendly too :)
Byward market is pretty happening at night. The only reason it feels sketchy or run down is because the homeless shelters are right down town in the tourist areas. So alot of homeless people.
Been there a few times. Byward is very busy and lots of activity in the summer. Lots of choices of food and patios to grab a beer. Lots of walking trails and mix of city and nature a great balance. Not overwhelming like the large cities. People always seemed very friendly/happy and seemed family friendly. Prefer Ottawa and Kingston over Montreal and Toronto.
Haha! I’ve been working in Ottawa’s nightlife for 15 years. We have an amazing underground... you just have to look for it. It’s not for the tourists so if you don’t know someone here, you won’t find the graffiti, the film festivals, the concerts, the really weird stuff like drag shows, pop up dinner parties in weird locations, the rap battles, etc... Forget winter in Ottawa though. I travel in the winter 😅
We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. Thanks for sharing!!!!!
Downtown Ottawa was somewhat unkempt for a number of years because of the subway construction. It opened in September 2019. Now, if we could just move past covid, so the city can fully revive.
Very disappointed. Stock footage..and all the Ottawa clichés none of the history. And please learn how to pronounce things before you comment, typical American..puts his views out there without verifying anything.
You can rent bicycles and see both Ottawa and Gatineau. There are miles and miles of bicycle paths. Now they even have the little electric scooters you can rent. FUN! Kayaking, canoing and shooting the rapids on the Ottawa River. Don''t forget that! AND THE food. Yummy, especially the French food.
The worst part about going to Ottawa: it's Ottawa. The best part about going to Ottawa: dear god do you know that nothing in supposed to survive the barren tundra, and look - it's a miracle - the lights are on, you can take public transit and see the capital of the most respected nation on earth who takes in people from all over the world and tries to show an example of how to become better and more decent for the rest of the world to see and my god, the lights are still on and you can go to a store and buy oranges in middle of January.
Ottawa resident here. This video is slightly outdated and contains several inaccuracies.....for instance, it’s Byward Market, not Bayward.....nonetheless, nice to see Mark standing in front of my workplace (Parliament)...
As an 3 years resident of Ottawa I would like to say that : roads quality are one of the worst I've ever seen in my life! When driving my Audi I feel that I drive the old poor quality car somewhere in off roads mountains. Will stay extra few years but no more.
Ottawa is my second hometown, but on the French side of the river..lots of nightlife!! 😉 but don't miss Chinatown and/or Little Italy! Ottawa situated on the Ottawa River, it still takes my breath away! Take a ride across the Champlain Bridge 👍
My favorite place The Rideau Canal,,,walking and biking down the bike paths and skating on the Worlds Largest Skating Rink and takes ya all the way to Dows Lake where theres alot to do there for Restaurants and Boating etc also thats where Little Italy starts Carling Ave and Preston Street ya cant miss it and if ya go on the opposite side of the canal it brings ya to these awesome Falls place,,Im not sure about now but when I lived in the area I use to see teenagers jumping off the rocks,,pretty scary but all in all Im just saying our Beautiful Tourists gotta hop on the O Train (as long as its working right 😂😉)and theres more to see from all over not just the downtown area,,as locals we stay away from downtown but i will go to our Byward Market for our fresh foods and help our Beautiful Farners and their Families but yes Nightlife everyone goes across to Hull Quebec as they call that whole area Gatineau but I still call it Hull Quebec 😊 Yes people are very Friendly here and there are some thinking we crazy trying to talk on our buses or at bus stops and wherever we are but thats up to each individual of trusting and just to Smile every day tho we all have our days,,Great video ❤❤Stay safe and God bless you and your Wonderful Family 🤗🤗
I am from Ottawa... I keep hearing you say "Bayward market" It is "By ward" and yah it is so dead hear at night lol... Go to Montréal for a great night life... 2 hours away worth the drive. :D
It's not a kinda of a cool place It is a cool place . It's called ' the BY- WARD market Not the bay ward market Ottawa is not run down It's a beautiful and clean City
You missed talking about the Ottawa Valley. I've been here almost 40 years. There are a lot of hidden surprises and hidden treasures. Of course most of those are not in view of those who are just passing through.
My hometown. Glad you got a chance to visit. Most people from the US just pass by on the 401 between Montreal and Toronto. As for the parking, we got a new metro system in 2019, so don't drive.
I'm a little surprised to hear that Ottawa may seem unsafe and rundown. I've lived throughout Canada, and Ottawa is generally a fairly well-kept, beautiful city. Agreed, it can come off as dull and you need to look a little harder sometimes for excitement. Also, it's the Byward Market, not Baawyward.
Very familiar with this city. I can't visualize large parts of its layout in my head, like with some cities, but my mom grew up there, I have a lot of family on my mother's side still there, and my sister went to university there, so I've been there a lot. This is a good summary. I especially agree about the winters, which are notoriously brutal. It's simultaneously cold, even by Canadian standards, snowy, and there's always a risk of freezing rain. There are nice byproducts of these winters, such as the Canal, but you MUST check the weather forecast in Ottawa all the time, especially if you plan on driving. Bus transportation in Ottawa is not bad, but there is little light rail and no subway, so you may need to drive depending on your circumstances. Despite that, I love Ottawa. Its museums are excellent, as you pointed out, it has a gorgeous downtown with beautifully preserved 19th century gothic architecture, it's safe, and it's actually not as boring as people think. Your mentioning of its natural parts, I should also include its integration into the Trans-Canada Trail system, is also a real plus. *Just as a side note, it's generally pronounced "By-ward Market" not "Bay-ward Market." Though I saw a comment where you now know. I know this was a throwback. No biggie. :)
You need to pronounce the following correctly, the Rideau Canal is pronounced phonetically as the Ree doo canal and it is not the Bayward Market it is the Byward (Bye ward) Market named after Colonel By was Ottawa's founder and Builder of the Rideau Canal
If you do your homework you will be so busy during the day that all you want to do at night is sleep! Secondly, if you do your homework, you will park your car and buy a bus pass and see the city on foot! If you do your homework you will learn how to say the names of locations before you go to the city so you don't look like an idiot making a video saying all the names wrong! If you do your homework, Ottawa is full of history and culture; all cities have run down areas so it's a moot point! My favourite thing about Ottawa, when you travel to a massive city and it doesn't feel like a massive city like Toronto or meh, DC!
I hate this place. I moved here 10 years ago when I was 17, and it has made my life incredibly difficult, not being bilingual or having a diploma. Everyone here is an entitled lazy government worker. It's a city to retire in.
The Byward market is not sketchy aside from the homeless shelter where people sell drugs out in the open. Only Rideau Street is sketchy at night at this one particular McDonald's which always has problems. There is a video of a massive brawl that took place there in front of the cashiers and a dude pulls out a baby racoon mid-video. There's been many times where I've been trapped on Rideau street because the buses only kick back in around 5AM. Don't talk to anyone and don't try and bum a cigarette and you should be fine. Other than that, there are a few night clubs in the downtown area, bars and restaurants, and a strip club if one were so inclined. If that gets boring, you can always try and find a night club or two directly across the bridge to Hull, Gatineau.
I think you captured Ottawa’s school field trip vibes well- you’re going to learn something and have a pleasant (probably not exciting) time. 😊 Ottawa Valley is gorgeous in the autumn too.
This is a mute city.... Not allowed to make noise... Not allowed to talk to anybody. Everybody is fake... Been here 8 years... Waste your life in ottawa. Nice buildings.
I live in Montreal and tourist to Ottawa a couple times per year for work and friends-visiting. This video is pretty accurate (it's named Byward market Mark! After a Colonel By! Ahhh!), though night life has gotten a lot better in the last ten years. Gatineau is really where people stay up late and hang out, is the thing you maybe didn't emphasize. Hang out at a house party if you can; locals used to say that the best thing about Ottawa is the Friday train to Montreal, but that's a bit over-stated now.
That's relatable. I'm also from Montreal and I used to study at the University of Ottawa. I was, and remain, of the view that Ottawa is the superior city from Monday to Thursday, whereas Montreal has Ottawa beat during the weekend. Ottawa is the better place to work or study, whereas Montreal is where you get your fun, your culture and your parties.
@@woltersworld Oh, silly Wolters World Mark. Stop by Montreal again and we will feed you and make your face make strange noises correctly, when the party at our borders is again ready to accept USonians.
3:13 Yay Friday! I was bored of my accurates in Ottawa! Eated Tim Hortons! Boring Winter school and Winter g seeings on butt boring! Very bored and did dirt's Edit THANSJ FOR LKES Haha comment
Always funny when I hear tourists talking about Ottawa. I think most of the comments are spot on. I live in Ottawa and it is a rather boring city for night life. Don't come in Winter as it is bloody cold. Skating on the Rideau Canal isn't fun when the temperature is -20 Celsius in the open with the awful wind. Hotel is expensive for sure. If I were a tourist, I would spend my money in Calgary, Vancouver ... much nicer places.
LOL. If anyone comes to Ottawa, definitely ask a local. We can give you all the details of where to eat, night life and other things to do that aren't necessarily listed in any tourism brochure lol. Great vid! Any other Ottawa peeps watch this? 😆
Visited for a day as part of a college tour in 1987. Sadly our profs didn't realize the day was Canadian Thanksgiving and it was rainy, so much of an our day there was at an indoor mall. I hope to get back someday.amd actually see the place. Quebec City.was awesome though as was Montreal.
Yes. There are seedy sections in Ottawa, and parking can be a nightmare. Definitely take the tour of Parliament Hill, and the War Memorial. Sample some local cuisine. Especially Poutine!
Best things: biking; kayaking on the Rideau River or Lac Phillip in Gatineau park; cross-country skiing in the winter; live music at the Rainbow, Live on Elgin, Irene’s, or the Black Sheep in nearby Wakefield; restaurants in the ByWard market, Little Italy, Wellington West or Hull; Jazz festival, Bluesfest, and Folkfest; Film festivals, especially with the Canadian Film Institute, the National Art Gallery, day trips to Perth, Almonte, Westport, Merrickville, Aylmer; walking tours, especially the People’s history walking tours and Indigenous Walks tours; the Fringe festival and local theatre, especially at the GCTC and the National Arts Centre. Worst things: conservative/closed mindedness, reserved people, prices, public transit, lacks joie de vivre.
How to mispronounce everything in Ottawa. Otherwise, good video
2 года назад
Hi! I like your videos. May I correct something in the description of this one? Ottawa is a city located in Ontario. On the other side of the river is another city located in Quebec, called Gatineau. They sure are neighbor cities but should not be considered the same culturally, politically, etc. Regards, JRB
I grew up in Ottawa, Ottawa used to have good bars, clubs and just over the river in Quebec, not anymore. Ottawa is boring man, not too hot, it gets humid as hell.
You always give such nice reviews of Canada so I'd hate to say anything negative on your channel. Let's just look at this as some guidance towards local pronunciations. I get it, it's not always easy, especially in a multilingual region like Ottawa. Ottawa is not pronounced Attawa. It's more like Awe-da-wa, we don't even say the T's which doesn't help, right up there with Toronto = Ta-ra-na ByWard Markey. Not sure where you're getting the extra letters but try saying Buy-word Market Rideau stumps everyone who isn't from here. More like Re-dough (sadly it simply means curtains in French which was a description of our waterway) Gatineau - Try Gat-in-no Simply trying to make you sound more like a local than a tourist, please don't get upset :)
This video seems to be limited to the downtown core, Lowertown (Byward Market), and the Museum of Civilization, which is not part of Ottawa. You've missed so many great spots, such as the canal down to Dow's Lake, Hog's Back Falls, Rideau Falls, Lansdowne, and so much more. There is a nightlife but not so much in the core, as it's mostly government offices and retail buildings. If you're travelling with kids, you're probably not going to find too much for them at night (plus, you're probably putting them to bed so didn't have an opportunity to explore the nightlife?). I've lived most of my life in Ottawa and I've always found great night spots. And I've never felt unsafe here.
You need a car to have a good time here. Tourists must hate the fact that the main attractions are so spread out, and the downtown core is so small. You could fit the areas of Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver inside Ottawa. Don't rely on the transit systems exclusively, you won't be pleased. Why anyone from out of town would be attracted to the Byward Market, I have no idea. It's a sty. Positively nothing like being in Europe.
Reserve it as far in advance as possible. Right now I have reservations for all my vacation throughout the year and when I check rates now they are almost double
