This otter was being chased by an orca and knew exactly where to find refuge ❤️ Keep up with John's adventures and animal encounters on Instagram: / ibreathewater
Little guy quite accurately went "Okay the weird thing on that boat MIGHT kill me but this Orca is DEFINITELY going to kill me so I'll roll those dice!"
What I like best about the story is hearing 'the orca got far enough away so I could put my boat into gear and leave...' - not only a refuge boat for otters, but also taking care not to hurt the orca. Respect.
@@TraciPeteyforlife what about the feeling to film that otter from an arms lenght away to scare it and almost make it go back into the water? also, the orca could have crushed that boat if he just wanted to so it's not him watching out for anything except making sure to survive
No, it was more like "Oh shit I got some big thing on this rock coming after me too !" It always bugs me when people think a totally wild animal is going to understand their voice, be quiet and don't make sudden moves.
As a surfer on the NorCal coast, I can testify that you can tell when an animal is “on the hunt”. I’ve had sharks surface right next to me, and I was not scared at all. But one time, a Great White came after us, and you could just tell by the way it cut the water, it was on the hunt. And blind panic.
yep, i can't attest to sharks, but i go fishing in northern canada a lot. you come across a lot of bears, and most of the time bears don't scare me, but there is something in the air when a bear isn't just "in the area" but on the hunt. you can just tell the difference, even if you don't see it. I was fishing at a well known fishing point, and this chill just went down my spine. and i could tell something was behind me. I could barely keep my hands from shaking, it was such a powerful sense of just.... intense... something. and without hesitation i took three step and lept into my boat. good way to break something i might add, i was lucky and didnt. and i turned my head back at the point and this evil looking grizzly just charges out of the bushes, and leaps at my boat as well, ignoring the fish i had on the stringer right there. going straight for me. it landed short because it tried a direct path to the boat, where as i went sideways to get to it. i had an oar out before you could say the word oar and had shoved the boat into deeper water, the bear just looked at the boat... i could tell it was trying to decide if it was worth the attempt, and it turned around, again, ignoring my fish on the strigger, and climbed back on land then vanished into the forrest. i left the fish and the fishing pole/tackle box right were it was, and had lunch in the middle of the lake, a few miles away. only returning 3 hours later after a little tour of the lake. it never touched the fish. to this day i'll never forget that feeling when it was stalking me. just the pure intense... intention, in the air.
@@arizona_anime_fan I caught a cougar off it's guard up in the Olympics one afternoon. It wasn't hunting and looked at me looking at it and took off. Welcome to the food chain.
@@hannabaal150 I’ve seen two mountain lions at once on the crossing the trail right in front of me. They casually looked back and kept walking. Nothing to be afraid of. But I imagine if you panicked and did something stupid, they might react in a dangerous way.
@@arizona_anime_fan I seen a Grizzly chase a Moose for miles and even swam across a lake to kill that Moose. Miles. And swim. I had no idea they had that much stamina to run for miles, swim, then attack and kill a big arse Moose. That's scary sht. You got very lucky you had a lazy Grizzly. ✌🏼
@@Dirtbag-Hyena no shit, I saw that video. it's an insane one isn't it? yeah, at the time this occurred it was about 25 years ago and I definitely hadn't seen that video. I was absolutely not aware they were capable of that, else I probably would have pissed myself (it was close already, the only reason I didn't is I didn't get a good look at the bear leaping at me, I was so busy shoving away from the shore, so I more heard it hit the water then saw it); that scared the heck out of me though. what will fry your mind is the boat was a 10ft aluminum boat with a sideboard about 6" above the water, that bear could have EASILY got into the boat (well swamped/sunk it) had it really wanted to. at the time it hit the water i was about 10ft from the shore in probably 8ft of water. the only reason it was that deep is this was one of those glacial lakes in northern canada, where the shoreline is mostly just bare rock with deep water over the edge. so by leaping into the boat my momentum had shoved the boat away from short probably saving my life. had that thing been on a soft sand/mud beach i would have never got it into water deep enough to matter. and probably been bear dinner. that was a big bear too. never really appreciated how gigantic a grizzly is till i saw that one up close and personal. big f-ing animal.
That otter kills creatures every single day to survive, as does the orca. As does humans. Something has to die every day so you can stay alive. yes broccoli is alive too.
I saw a video one time where a penguin jumped on a tourist boat. There was a whole pod of orcas circling that boat for probably a good hour before they finally left and the penguin felt safe enough to go. Also, the boat can't move while the orcas are there because they could get injured. So they just hung out until it was safe. It was hilarious and cute the way the penguin just hung out in the boat like "these are my people, they'll protect me."
I love that the little guy gave love bumps to the boat after getting off. As if to say - "thank you for this boat, and thank you boat, for being there." 🥰
Right place, right time for the otter. Cap’s saying “you’re safe, dude, I’m not going to hurt you,” almost choked me up bc as he also said how small he felt w all this wonder around him! Beautiful man & experience.
@@CalebBerman Quick question. Do you believe it's right to evangelize or do you do that because it's your duty If this is the latter, were you chosen by the god to evangelize, or by humans If it's the first, is it right to evangelize like that, by just spreading words that people will ignore, or should you rather search for people, who have lost their way in life and help them find it back
Every Christian should tell others about the Lord's Jesus sacrifice for sinners like us so we don't go to hell. You willingly and freely choose to ignore and reject the Lord' sacrifice for you or to accept it, hopefully... It is every Christian's duty to remind you of this.
It's kind of amazing when the otter figured he was safer on the boat rather than in the water. Granted it may be the circle of life, but letting the otter take refuge, even for a little while, was cool to watch (and I'm sure he didn't mind either). Well done and well handled.
Otter breathes a sigh of relief "Thank God I'm safe. Oh no, there's one of those humans coming at me with a phone. Maybe I'll take my chances with the whale"
I am so glad for that otter. You did something wonderful! You gave the otter a chance to save itself by providing a safe haven for it, and at the same time, you got the satisfaction of giving it a little more time to be alive and free on this beautiful world. The otter somehow knew it would be safe. ❤
I hate to think the otter might’ve lost a friend out there. Orcas are cool but this is one of those times where their nature is heartbreaking. Glad that Otter was smart enough to trust that boat.
You are very fortunate to be able to help a little guy like that out. I'm sure that memory will stay with you for a long time. I hope you left your name & address so that he could come and visit. I would! My compliments to you.
I love otters, if this guy had a little otter buddy with him that day and he was indeed getting back into the water to check on him, I hope that little otter also made it out okay.
He didn't show any kindness toward the orca or its next victim. It will just eat another otter. Or do you think the boat should follow the orca around and save every otter? Dummies
Good job on your part for not interfering. As of the boat, this is how I see it: we are a part of nature and so are the things we create. The moment we decided to put boats on the water, it's fair game. The otter made a clutch call and it paid off; good on him/her.
Got to love it when the Otter goes "time out" to an Orca and uses the Human as an accomplice! Sir, I'm not sure you know this, but that Otter now owes you Oysters or Clams for Life every time you pass by there, make sure he keeps his end of the deal cause he'll try to stiff you since he's an otter.
Not necessarily. Sure, he didn’t die that day but statistically speaking humans are the most dangerous animals on the planet. There are actually different types of orcas (just as some humans are vegetarians), some sustain themselves on fish only, others sustain themselves on small mammals and sharks, etc.
@@SunDedGon ha. I know. .it's on the top of the most recycled comments on boobtoob. And i don't know why. So many better lines in that movie and most were from the mighty Quint. And hooper
@@Kgio-2112 And the line, "you're gonna need a bigger boat" was unscripted.....Roy Scheider made it up on the spot and the director decided to keep it in the final version.....
To someone new to water, large predators and prey, this would have been one hell of an experience. I get that 'energy' thing. It is real and part of the scheme of things. Like an invisible force we can sense and are actually a part of. And,when the whale surfaced near the boat, whoa! Can you imagine the horror if these incredible predators starting attacking the boat by pushing it to tip and ramming it for weak spots?! They must know our species is on board and respectfully leave us alone. I'm just amazed at the intelligence of these majestic beasts.
Orcas learn to hunt from their mothers and they have extremely strong cultural traditions when it comes to hunting. There's been no record of orcas ever intentionally hunting humans, throughout all human history that we know of. It's possible to speculate endlessly as to why that is, but unless we figure out how to translate orca squeals to English and vice versa, we won't ever really know.
@@biosparkles9442 I'm pretty sure it is to do with the fact we don't have enough fat on us and in our history with orcs is very recent compared to other animals, so they don't hunt as they haven't been taught to. Transient orcas live in the artic water near Alaska, so it is possible humans don't swim there due to the icy cold waters and thus orcas don't hunt as due not having enough interactions for orcas to learn us to be food. That's what I've heard at least
@@cherrysquids3994 You're absolutely right, and I'm not sure why I didn't mention it, but the most likely reason that orcas don't hunt humans is that we'd be a wildly unreliable and not very nutritious food source.
What an amazing experience for John and I'm so glad the otter was clever enough to know when to stop going in & out of the water and to stay on the boat as he/she sensed that John was no threat. I just hope the otter did live to see another day and that it's still alive. I can't even imagine having to live a life of constant threat of being killed on a daily basis.
@@grtinfulleffect8349 Yeah, he's heard of it. His statement still stands - "he can't _imagine_ having to live a life of constant threat of being killed on a daily basis." His statements holds true about the otter, and of medieval times. Next.
Wow that was the coolest story I've ever seen and heard. The guy is lucky that the orca wasn't angry to the point where it would've wanted to tip the boat over over worse. That an amazing experience
I’m convinced the otter understood John at 1:28 when he said “I’m not gonna hurt you” because he was 100% about to jump in the water then immediately changed his mind & decided to stay for awhile once he heard he wasn’t going to be harmed.
you robbed this poor orca of a perfectly fine meal. you monster. imagine his baby orca's look when he comes back without food. i hope you're proud of yourself.
2:53 did he just high five you? Orca has to eat and all, but when an wild animal looks you dead in the eye and pleads for help... I doubt anyone could refuse. Well done!
Yes, The Otter was lucky your boat was there for refuge at the right time. If the Otter had a buddy or a mate, it probably wasn't so lucky. Thanks for the video. Take care.
O GOSH 😯 THAT would put the fear of GOD into me too! POOR Little Baby, Talk about being in the right place at the Right Time, for THAT Otter 🦦. Precious Beautiful little Pet 🥰❤️❣️
That was miraculous that you were there as a LIFE BOAT for that little otter. Bless You! Sorry, Orca. But I know you got some food Off Camera, LOL. Circle of Life. Whew! Talk about REALITY TV, 😘
you can tell when he got back in the water at the end that he was thankful that this guy had saved his life. if he wasn't there, that orca would've caught him and it would've been lights out for the poor guy
@@fatalshore5068 I wasn't saying that the orcas would have killed the humans, I just wouldn't want to be on that boat if the orca wanted to go after a seal that jumped on a boat.
@@gio7796 sorry, I meant wild orcas. 4 people have been killed by non wild orcas which honestly just speaks to their intelligence even more. Those were seemingly pre meditated murders
Next time bring fish for the orca -- they can be bargained with! Human: "Hey, dude. You leave the otter alone and I've got five pounds of sea bass with your name on 'em!" Orca: "Make it ten pounds and you've got a deal."
@@jonriley8342 animals don’t have souls. Hate to break it to ya. If they can choose between Heaven and hell OR GOD and the world…. They would have souls. But they can’t choose. They simply are beautiful creatures that are purely instinctive to survive.
