Imagine being the King's son, newly ascended to the throne of a crumbling nation, fraught with grief for your father and the sure disappointment you will bring to his name in the coming end to this war, when all of a sudden, you see that out of a dust storm on the Red Sea, you sight the billowing flag of the Portuguese Navy as dozens of great warships sail into harbor. Offloading hundreds of soldiers and thousands of muskets, their captain comes up to you, pauses, and offers you his hand, saying: "Olá meus irmãos. @@SalX22 hello; no my friend, Portugal was for sure a colonial empire, but the early stages of this mega venture was to reach India and secure its trade for us. The conquest and or construction of forts, garrisons, and the establishment of treaties served the interest of snatch the Indian trade from our rivals - namely the Ottomans and Venice. Colonialism came precisely after the disastrous Iberian Union, where we lost the monopoly of India, and then turned to further exploit the territories of Brasil. Even the African territories of Angola, Moçambique and Bissau are a much later affair.

Well,...if I remember well, the chronicles over here in Portugal doesn't say quite that (the ~50 remaining training their allies in the use of the musket) otherwise this would make a lot of sense right when they landed from the Armada heading to the Red Sea. Indeed there was a big cache of material, some heavy, that had been buried because it was not feasible to move it around, and in some extent the training could have happened but it doesn't look to have been written by the writer which accompanied the expedition. What it is written is that a complete change of tactics took place for the final engagement with the Portuguese contingent taking care (aim) solely against the Ottomans while the Ethiopian Cavalry and other forces doing as much as possible to cover them. Eventually one good aimed shot made the difference. It is also not commented that the Ethiopian Royalty weren't impressed at first with the number or ability of the Portuguese that came in their help. Cristovão da Gama was aware of that and in one of the early skirmishes when the Ethiopian allies advised to simply go around an enemy high ground stronghold they classified as too difficult to take, he took a chance to single handed with his men take it out without help of their allies. The description of the events is interesting. For some days the Portuguese would probe the walls with small groups. On a safe distance, hidden, the Artillery commanders were observing where the reaction was showing in the walls and doing their maths. When finally the day of the assault come, they divided the group and storm the fort from 3(?) sides. Already knowing where the defenders would gather, the artillery showed up and fired simultaneously for the 1st time with repeated precise hits, creating havoc in the structure & defences. Casualties among the Portuguese were very low. At the distance it is said the Royalty was witnessing the events astonished and from that point onwards they would comply with whatever the course of action the Portuguese suggest.

@Forsaken Janissary Actually, many Africans voluntarily converted to Islam and then created large empires. Mansa Musa's wealth resulted more than from a trade in slaves. Mali's wealth derived from it being situated between lucrative trade routes connecting North Africa with lands south of the Sahara. Gold and salt were shipped through these routes. Mali's taxation of trade routes is what made Mali and its emperors exorbitantly wealthy.

Fun fact. Before the battle began 16:16 the Ottoman soldiers made a great speach to the Adal sultanate soldiers. In the past we didn't know what they said because there were no records. But now after the joint 2018 somali turkey history search we can finally know what they said. Today's battle is sponsored by the Ottoman empire, one of the biggest empire of the 16th century and it's totally free! Currently almost 200 thousand soldiers have joined sultanate over the last century, and it's one of the most impressive empire, in its Sipahi with detailed armor, horses and smooth Kilij that decapitate 100 Hussars and landsknecht per month! All the army in the empire can be customized with unique gear that changes your armor buffs and firearms! The Incest Habsburgs have some ridiculous skills of their own and figuring out the perfect party and strategy to take Vienna is a lot of fun! Currently with over 15,000,000 subjects, the ottoman empire has almost a perfect score on the Balkans! The empire is growing fast and the highly anticipated war in the indian ocean feature is now live, you might even find my squad out there in Hindustan! It's easier to start now than ever with rates program for new soldiers. You get a new daily akce reward for the first 90 days that you join the empire! So what are you waiting for? Go to the nearest ottoman ship, click on the special links and you'll get yatagan sword and a free epic cossack slave as part of the new soldier program to start your journey! I wouldnt call them perfect, they still use the Crescent and star as the symbol of Islam but its not. Those symbols represented the ottoman turks nothing else. Yes, the europeans started identifying them both as one and the same, still doesnt make it right, its the equivalent of the vatican flag representing Christianity not the cross. If both symbos represented Islam, you would see them in all flags of majority muslim countries but you only see them in turkic countries or former ottoman client states like tunisia. Most Arab countries will never accept them as symbols of Islam, just look at their flags. Pakistan uses the crescent and star as their founder was a big admirer of Atatürk. Thats also a big indicator, that most of their sources comes from the european side, not that good if you want to tell History as objective as possible.

This part of Abyssinian history amazes me !!!!! It was so devastating war that the Oromos migrate or expand to the north with no or little resistance. Little correction: Atse Libne Dingill was defeated and murdered in Shimbra Kure ( a place around Debre Zeit) One of his son (MInas--he was around seven years old ) was cuptured and sent to the ship of Othomans in the Red sea. The other son Gelawdewos was hiding with around 40 of his soldiers in the Shoan mountains- (The 400 portuguese soldiers contacted him after their arrival in Debre Damo ( where they meet the queen of Abyssinia -Seble Wongel)). Surprisingly, after defeating Garad Ahmed, Gelawdewos crowens as a king died right away in the shore of Zeyla fighting for Abyssinian port. Minas has returned to Abyssinia in exchange of war prisoners and became king. As he was so young and did not have the expertise of leading and lack of soldiers (Abyssinian men were almost murdered by the Adals/ Othomans, he left south abyssinia and fled first to Gojjam and then to Gondar. The portuguese soldiers (they had also preists with them) asked Gelawdewos to convert Abyssinia to Catholisim becuase they said his father( Libne Dingil) has promised to do so. But he refused to abandon Orthodoxy and the portguse were bewidered and devided in to three. 1. Those who took the King's offer and wanted to help King Gelwdewos in his adventure of returning his lost port in the red sea. 2. Those who wanted to go back to their homeland, portugal or to India (Goa) 3. Those who were so angry at Gelawdewos and stayed in Abyssinia and conspired with other tribes to attack Gelawdewos. (these group were so shrewd that they almost succeeded to converting the country to Catholisism some years later -- During King Susenyous) This part of history is so fascinating and has brought a huge shift to Abyssinia.

It could be that the Ethiopians had spent the years before the decisive battle slowly building up a strong army. And while the Adalites didn't expect opposition maybe they kept their army together to march unopposed through Ethiopian territory in a show of force to break the enemy's spirit and bring about final victory. Those are possible explanations for the suggested sizes of the armies.

The Ethiopian government in the past committed atrocites and attempted to wipe out the harari community for what Imam ahmed did to abyssinia. Adal sultanate was established by harari. @@mrhassanali3297 actually most leading historians state Imam Ahmed Gurey was Somali..most of the soldiers were harari? Then why does the yemeni scholar and writer of the Futuh Al Habasha clearly state that the majority of the Adal Sultanate army and cavalry was Somali ? He even mentions all the Somali clans in detail from their leaders' names the cities they occupied and how many elite soldiers, archers, swordsmen and cavalry soldiers that they sent ..for example the author calls the Harti Darod Somalis the most famous swordsmen of the entire Adal sultanate armies, he also calls the Gerri Koombe Darod and the Marehan Darod the most famous archers in the entire army..he then mentions other major Somali clans that sent huge numbers of knights and soldiers such as the Habar Magaadle, the Karanle Hawiye and the Jidwaaq Darod who alone sent 2000 knights, not soldiers but all 2000 were called knights as reported by the yemeni author..its a historical fact that is mentioned by all leading historians (well educated western historians who arent biased unlike an irrelevant Harari who doesnt even control his own city Harar where your people are outnumbered by Oromo and amhara) that the majority of the Adal sultanate forces at an overwhelming number where Somalis from various Somali clans..this is a fact which I can provide sources of well known historians with PHDs from internationally revered institutions, who state this fact..they also all affirm and corroborate that Nur ibn Mujahid was Somali, these are historians saying this and I can show the proof yet you cant 😂😂on top of this the descendants of Emir Nur ibn Mujahid exist to this day within the Marehan sub clan of the Darod Somali clan family, their lineage goes back to Nur ibn Mujahid, and they are known by all Somalis.. R.Basset (editor), Histoire de la conquete de l’Abyssinie (History of the Conquest of Abyssinia), Paris, 1897-1901 ^ Dr. E. Cerulli, Documenti arabi per la storia dell’Ethiopia, Memoria della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Vol. 4, No. 2, Rome, 1931 ^ Richard Pankhurst, The Ethiopian Borderlands (Trenton: Red Sea Press, 1997), p. 373 These sources all state Nur ibn Mujahid was Somali Show me authoritative peer reviewed academic sources that refute this Also, the Walashma dynasty of Adal and Ifat were Somalis ...their first capital was Zeila, is Zeila also harari now? Are the ancient Dir clan who are native to Djibouti and the Awdal region of Somalialnd as well as the Ogaden region, are they Harari? So, original capital of Adal and Ifat was Somali.. 90 percent of the army was Somali, the royal family was Somali, nur ibn Mujahid was Somali Go read the futuh al habasha and show me anywhere that says Hararis made up the majority of the army 😂😂😂😂😂it was Somalis who were the majority as the book clearly says The reality is your harla ancestors were ruled by my Somali ancestors, we even built the jugol wall of Harar, and you repay this with trying to distort historical facts 😂😂😂pathetic, say thanks to your former rulers and protectors You are a delusional fool..you're people have become so irrelevant you are reduced to one city of which you are a minority in 😂😂😂whereas Somalis control all of Ogaden region, Djibouti, Somaliland, Somalia and nfd kenya Harla (not Oromo and amhara admixed hararis) were an ally of Somalis but they were a minority in the Somali led sultanates of Ifat and Adal Ifat sultanate (predecessor of Adal, both ruled by Walashma dynasty who were Somalis of the Dir clan) was founded in Zeila, this is where they originated according to arabic sources from the 13th century such as the arab historian al Maqrizi..so if Walashma dynsaty was Harari like you erroneously claim, why did it originate in an ancient Somali city that was well known even before islam as being a Somali city, Zeila ? Leo Africanus in the 1600s also said the Walashma dynasty was Somali You cant show me sources for your revisionist claims like I did My Somali ancestors were the most powerful muslims in the horn after the Somali Ifat Sultanate headquartered at Zeila conquered the arab ruled Sultanate of Shewa, since then it was Somalis of the Ifat and Adal Sultanates that protected Islamic in the horn Keep crying, it wont change facts, all historians and pretty much anyone who looks into and researches the history of the Ifat Sultanate and Adal Sultanate and the Walashma dynasty and Nur ibn Mujahid, quickly discerns these were distinctly Somali in origin Instead of attempting to claim well known Somali kingdoms and historical figures like Ahmed Gurey and Nur ibn Mujahid, ifat and Adal, worry about your insignificant Harari ethnic group who have lost all their lands becoming heavily admixed with amhara and Oromo, with the sad status quo of Harar where you are outnumbered by Oromo and amhara 😂😂😂😂😂😂 (a city whose jugol wall was built by my direct cousin Nur ibn Mujahid since he was Marehan Darod like me) whereas Somalis still control our lands, the largest in africa settled by one ethnic group: from jigjiga, qoraxay, Dire Dawa, Qabridahar, Gode, Fafan, Aw Barre and Moyale in the Ogaden region to Djibouti, Somaliland, Somalia and the NFD region of kenya (Garissa, Mandera and Wajir counties)

@@mrhassanali3297 you must be extremely asinine, for you to attempt to distort historical facts with a revisionist agenda..but you didnt realise that even this very youtube channel and video reaffirms and corroborated the historical fact the the majority of the asal Sultanate armies were from Somalis and that the capital was Zeila Zeila has a recorded history of being Somali going back 2000 years (600 years before islam and 1300 years before the Ifat or Adal sultanates)..the proof is the 1st century greek document Periplus of the Erythrean sea So basically Hararis cannot claim Zeila as it has been a well known Somali inhabited Somali controlled and Somali dominated trading port coastal city in recorded and documented history going back 2000 years, yet we know as per this video and historical sources that the Walashma royal family of Ifat and Adal came from Zeila and their headquarters of both sultanates of Ifat and Adal were at Zeila ..how could laangaab (irrelevant) Harla or Hararis establish a kingdom in land belonging to powerful Somali warriors 😂😂😂😂such absurdity.. reality is Somalis established Ifat and then conquered the Shewa sultanate (arabs of makhzumi quraysh origin who were ruling your harla ancestors and lands)..so Somalis of Ifat Sultanate conqjered harla lands ..this is a fact because historical sources from europeans and arabs confirm that the Ifat sultanate and its Walashma sultans from Zeila overthrew the makhzumi sultans of the Shewa sultanate, thereby annexing those lands😂😂😂not only was Ifat somali, we also conquered your ancestral lands, and the successor state to Ifat, Adal sultanate continued ruling over your harla lands from thr 1200s till the 1500s, with the last Somali ruler being emir Nur ibn Mujahid Wow 😂😂😂I'd be ashamed too if I was Harari Ruled by makhzumi arabs of Shewa sultanate, annexed by Walashma Somalis of Ifat from Zeila, then passed over to one of the Walashma descendants who established Adal sultanate, then passed over to the famous Marehan Darod Emir of Harar Nur ibn Mujahid ibn Ali ibn abdullah Al Dhuhi Suha ..then passed over to the slave of Nur ibn Mujahid Usman Al Habashi😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
