Just to settle the argument... In the 2013 NCAA Rule book, the organization offered clarification in Section E, Article 3, which discusses editorial changes, to what it considers to be an interception and recovery. The following won't be fun to read if you bleed orange. "a. To catch a ball means that a player: 1. secures control of a live ball in flight with his hands or arms before the ball touches the ground, and 2. touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then 3. maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform an act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball, advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc., and 4. satisfies paragraphs b,c, and d below. b. if a player goes to the ground in the act of catching (with or without contact by an opponent) he must maintain complete and continuous control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone … if he loses control of the ball which then touches the ground before he regains control, it is not a catch." c. If the player loses control of the ball while simultaneously touching the ground with any part of his body, or if there is doubt that the acts were simultaneous, it is not a catch. If a player has control of the ball, a slight movement of the ball will not be considered a loss of possession; he must lose control of the ball in order for there to be a loss of possession." Later on the rule book announces the inevitable: "When in question the catch, recovery or interception is not completed."
The rule has BEEN in place. Must maintain throughout. Ball came out when he hit the ground. No INT. Same reason Green didn't get a TD for OU prior to the fake FG. If either got screwed, it was OU on that play because the defender hit him in the face to break up the pass. Should have been a personal foul on OSU.

Here is why Gilbert's play at 1:58 WAS NOT an interception: Gilbert catches the ball, but when he falls, he lands on top of the OU player. He's not down at that point. When he actually hits the turf, the ball pops out immediately. Therefore, the apparent interception did not "survive the ground", which is the requirement on a play like that. Three different officials clearly saw what happened and made the proper call.
And then, after proving himself as a passing QB, Blake Bell switched to Tight End to give Trevor Knight more snaps but ALSO....to make room for Baker Mayfield. He landed in the NFL where he was used in 2 Tight End sets....and as a backup to Travis Kelce....on the KC CHIEFS. Mr Bell won a ring just this last year. #BoomerSooner
I was at this game. I saw OSU fans crying, and saw 2 OSU students get into a fight with each other. It was a weird vibe. OSU really thought they were going to win this game, and probably should have.
This is an example of what is referred to in the local vernacular as "The Poke Choke". The "interception was not the last play of the game. OSWHO had several opportunities to stop OU. They did not do it.

I was 10 years old when I saw this game. I’ve been looking for it for so long and I finally found it again once I remembered it happened the same year as the iron bowl miracle.
OU deserved to win and did. No arguments, other OSU fans need to stop complaining we still have up the score. But OU fans complaining about the "classlessness" of OSU is quite comical, knowing OU owns the title of the least classy fans in the United States of America.

He FELL on the Sooner WR?!?!? He was already down by contact!! When he caught it, he came down on the WR, then rolled to the ground and his arm hit the field, that's when the ball came out. He was already down by contact. If he had caught it and hit the ground straight away I can buy the argument, but he didn't. He LANDED on the OU player, who was already on the ground. He was down. Blown call, OU pulls out a win in a game that was called completely one sided. Congrats.
Ryan Austin If you actually read the rule book you will see that you have to have full possesion of the ball even when you hit the ground. So that means if you hit the ground and then let go of the ball then it is incomplete. Not a blown call OSU still can't seem to best OU as said in our 84-17 record it's also safe to say we've shut you out more times than you have beaten us. Step up your game.

Same reason the pass to the OU TE in the back of the endzone was not a catch. Didn't maintain possession through the whole play. OU 5 penalties, 59 yards. OSU 7 penalties, 59 yards. Super one sided.

Agreed. I used to be one of the "I'll cheer for them if they are't playing OU" people. Their fans made it so hard that I always cheer for their opposition. Even if that opposition is...texas.
True story here... In HS, when OU was WAAAY down in the mid-90's, I went with one of my buddies and his family to an OSU game in Stillwater (They were all OSU fans/his dad was an alum; donor, etc). I had grown up an OU fan, my entire family had gone to OU, but Oklahoma was playing Texas in dallas that Saturday, so I figured, what the heck. I will check out an OSU game as a neutral observer. Well, OSU proceeded to get their asses whipped by A&M i believe it was... However, do you know for what the LOUDEST cheers I heard from inside the stadium that day were from ??? It had NOTHING to do with the OSU football team..plays they made, etc.. Every time they put the OU-Texas score on the scoreboard, that Oklahoma was losing, announced the score, etc....the place erupted like OSU scored a td (which didn't happen often that day).. Anyway, from that moment on, that second on, I made up my mind that I would NEVER pull for Aggie, in ANYTHING, vs ANYONE... And the rest of my HS, college, and professional career, never have, all due to that Saturday in High School....
@boomer13ish - I had something similar happen to me too. I would always be the fan who would "support every team" when they didn't play each other. Then I was around my OSU friends at a watch party when OU was playing Tennessee and those people are disgusting. The look on their face when OU came back from 17 down to win in over-time was priceless. I will never cheer for another aggie.

Its a *hatred (and in turn, due to OSU's hatred, and the behavior you mentioned), I have grown to HATE OSU. I mean HATE... The color, the mascot, the radio play by play, all of it. We OU alum say Texas is the hated rival...but in all honesty, deep down in places we don't talk about at parties (thank you A Few Good Men), OU-UT have a mutual respect for each other. Man of Low Moral Fiber stfu Oklahoma State got beat by the refs in this game one Justin Gilbert intercepted the ball and for two Oklahoma last touchdown wasn't a catch the WR was juggling the ball so no touchdown Oklahoma State wins. 2 times Big 12 Champions and probably Sugar Bowl champion 2 for 2 with BCS bowls games.
This was anything but a "vintage" OU team, but there was something delightfully satisfying about breaking the ol' Pokes hearts quite like this. They thought they had it. Except they didn't. So fun.

It's crazy, both of the biggest games in the OU season ended with a fumble and touchdown to seal the victory. this game with the fumble at 0 seconds on the clock, and the Alabama game where AJ fumbled at 50 seconds left...... man our OU defense brings the BOOM. BOOMER MF SOONER!

Ou won this game, not because the Gilbert dropped interception, but because of the WORST time management of the Gundy era. Running hurry up inside the redzone while ou has 1 timeout. I remember being at this game (oSu freshman year) knowing that “OU Magic” was going to happen.

This game was about athleticism pure and simple.OSU went into the game with a solid plan but it boiled down to who was gonna make the big play. I do believe the cowboys were a play away from taking it BUT sometimes you can't beat determination.
I feel sorry for the Cowboys - the worst thing to ever happen to them was to be in the same state as the Sooners. They trail the football series an incredible 90-18-7.....only a slightly better winning percentage than the Washington Generals basketball team has against their traditional opponent.

The only call I think was maybe wrong was the pass interference. The near interception was just that, a near interception. The pass Bell threw wasn’t passed the line. His whole body was behind the line, and the qb only has to have any part of the body behind the line of scrimmage. And it was a clean touchdown to Saunders. He even had two feet down. OSU had that game. They just couldn’t get the stop, which they had done all day.
OU beating the pokes in this game was just big brother looking out for little brother... osu got beat by mizzou 41-31 in their bowl game... can you imagine the score if they took on bama?

As an avid OSU fan: THEY DID NOT DO WHAT WAS NEEDED TO WIN. They played like crap all day long. Gilbert dropped the pick. Even if Bell crossed the line (which DID) it doesn't matter. Hang on to the ball and the cowboys win. Don't allow a TD drive in the last 100 seconds and the Cowboys win. Don't get a BS pass interference, don't play prevent defense, use a f-ing timeout!!!! A. The rule states that a player's feet have to cross the line of scrimmage. From the freeze frame photo of the Bell throw - his FEET did not cross. Yes his entire arm and thus the ball crossed, but since his feet didn't = legal play. B. Craig clearly 'held' Saunders' right side of the jersey as ball was in air. He then let go to lunge with left hand to breakup the pass and let go of the jersey with his right hand. Now the argument can be made that this was still not a PASS INTERFERENCE call, an should have been a less severe DEFENSIVE HOLDING. Regardless though. It would have been a 1st down. Field position would've changed but that doesn't equal OSU not losing the lead. THANK YOU, COME AGAIN!

I like the "OSUs win was lucky this year because we always own them" comments. Over history, yes. In the past 4 years bedlam wins are split. The total points in the last four years favors osu. If they would have tackled bell in 12 and Gilbert had caught that pick then OSU is 4-0. Total wins are tied. Both teams have 1 bcs bowl victory, OSU has more ranked wins, OSU has more bowl wins, and all signs point to OSU winning again this year.

We blew a 14 point lead because we had no offense after those 2 went out. We had a backup QB with no receivers to throw to, and both starting tailbacks injured. It's not rocket science.
But you blew it at home to a team that had lost 5 straight in blowout fashion, with it's 3rd string QB and 3 true freshman O-lineman. Let's not get stupid and act like without Trevor knight OSU is better than OU. Whether OU had Sam Bradford or Keith Nichols back there at QB, they'd still be better than that terrible OSU lineup. It wasn't that OSU came back because injuries made OSU better than OU. OU still should have won. Call it what you want, but up 14 with 5 minutes left at home to that bad of a team and losing is a choke. Period.
