I was thinking the same! Matt once said it was a "strained neck". They need to find a gentle chiropractor in the area. It can work wonders, especially if it is primarily percussion tool adjustments and not necessarily traditional manual style. My practice is way too far away over here in Sacramento. I use the Arthrostim tool. It could most likely significantly speed the healing process.

Differential advice from an ancient retired technician. When regearing a differential I always reuse the pinion depth shims. I do this because it's the housing that is likely to be out of spec and pinion is a highly tolerance item so you're not likely to go wrong reusing the shims. For the preload on your carrier also like to go + .001" to .0015" do the measure Gap to get the proper preload on the carrier bearings. But you probably already knew this stuff
@hillarylevenworth8824
@hillarylevenworth8824 Год назад
They have no press or bearing separator to get the old pinion shim off. They talk about it when he starts his setup process.
@marlobreding7402
@marlobreding7402 Год назад
@@hillarylevenworth8824 hot retro take that old bearing off and you could still save the shims at least enough of it to get a measurement. You're talking to somebody with over 50 years Automotive experiencing hundreds of differential so I know what I'm talking about. Unless of course you have the setup jig for that particular differential then you could go from scratch. But regearing a differential isn't terribly hard especially Theory use the pinion depth shim.

Just in case you were serious about throwing the old drill press in the scrap pile - I encourage selling it cheap or giving it away with all the caveats you want. There are tons of aspiring machinists and young shop people who would benefit from it, or taking it on specifically as a project to make it better (replace bad bearings, bore out the casting to true things up or sleeve bad fits, etc) as a learning project or use parts from it to repair other machines. Thanks for the great video on the front end repair and upgrades!

One thing I've found that seems to work well, is use whatever amount of shims that were in the axle initially with the new gear set. It either gets right on, or really close. Reason being is that the gearsets themselves are all pretty consistent regardless of make. The housing has about 95% of the variation. Your results may vary, but you probably will have more inconsistency with older axles.

Matt, your philosophy of abundance is so refreshing, compared to the many examples of scarcity that are on display these days. For those that have not heard of this concept it centers around the idea that there are plenty of successes and resources so that you can share graciously with others. I have so enjoyed watching your channel and the multitude of others that I've found through you. Thanks so much!!!

I love your enthusiasm, I have been following your channel for years now. As your welding knowledge continues to grow, please stop using your slag hammer as a pick axe. Every indentation you make is a stress point that may lead to failure. The hammer is designed to be slid along the toes of the weld to remove most if not all of the slag. The better the weldor's control of parameters such as amps, weld speed, rod speed, rod angle, base prep and more will cause the slag to release more easily. Jody from the YT channel WeldingTipsAndTricks is a phenomenal weldor worth watching and learning from if you get hungry for more! Love the channel and all your wild adventures, just want to save you from the mistake many weldors from outside the trade make. A wire brush wheel or cup on an angle grinder can help remove what the slag hammer leaves behind.

So was the reverse band smoked or was the band snapped in the 4l80e? I have a shift timing mod that I came up with years ago that prevents the band from being damaged due to repeated forward reverse forward shifting. Rigid type bands have limited adjustment ranges due to the ends of the band touching so running tight tolerances is extremely important. When people perform the dual feed direct mod a reverse engagement delay is created due to the larger volume of fluid needed to fill and exhaust from the direct drum. I run well over 2000hp in 4l80e transmissions with trans brakes and bump buttons for staging turbo cars and I never have problems with the reverse band. I run billet servos in all 4l80e builds.

Hi folks, I build motorcycle trikes and for years used plastiguage to set pinion gear preload . Now I use clingfilm. I find when the taper roller bearings just start to cut through the clingfilm, the lash is bang on. Love the channel, I was into off roading for 15 yrs with a heavily modified Daihatsu Fourtrak so your videos speak to me 😂

Hey Matt, can you please get someone to post the stats of how each of the teams scored in the welding challenge, the dyno numbers, the flex tests, and how far each team went on the dead pull? It'd be cool to be able to compare this years' stats against what everyone does next year & beyond. Thank you so much for everything y'all did to put on the event. It exceeded all of my expectations.

The Misadventure of Pappa F - Dyno - Eric=176 , Rory=188, Paul=196, Merlin = truck was broken down with a transfer case problem , Matt - vehicle was too big for the dyno platform RDI ( Flex numbers )- Eric =804 ? , Rory=702, Paul= 809, Merlin=793 , Matt= 665 Welding ( Strength test ) =Eric =2900+ , 3700, 3687, Rory=2900+, 3687? Paul=2250, Merlin=2461, Matt=2943 ( All the chatter made it hard to get the numbers right .) ( I did see a summary from MORR at one time , but , I think that even that had mistakes in it . EXAMPLE: Rory had 3 dyno chances and got 122,186, 188 but the MORR summary had his dyno number at 122.)

It takes time to do things right. Don't feel bad because estimated time is never the same as real time as I have been down that road before. I'm not surprised but glad you showed how to measure gear lash in the diff. Many DIY's don't do this and wonder why it fails after minimal use. I used to work on my own car years ago and had to improvise different ways to remove or install components but the one thing I wish I had was a lift like yours. I am glad you post videos for us to see the reality of building something but I would like to know what video editing software you use. It is also a big investment and now that I am retired, I have many home videos to edit and transfer from VHS (yes you read that right)!

Through trial and lots of error finally got a worthy racer. Note we needed the help of pros that had skills like Matt and Tom for the more technical things.
