Hi everyone! This week's video is a little kitchen upcycle home project we did at the end of last year. We turned our dark and outdated kitchen into a light, bright and more stylish space for under £200.
In the video I'm sharing what we did to spruce up our kitchen and utility room on a tight budget with a few easy upcycle hacks.
I've linked all the products we used below.
(I worked with Valspar Paint on an Instagram collaboration for the paint used in this video. This video isn't sponsored but the paint was gifted as part of a previous collab)
Check out my blog post on the upcycle as well for more detailed info on how to lay the worktop.

ONE PAN ROAST CHICKEN WITH BUTTER BEANS, CAULIFLOWER AND POTATOES
INGREDIENTS:
whole chicken
Butter beans
Cauliflower florets
New potatoes (cut in half)
2 x Chicken stock cubes (Kallo Organic ones are the best)
Tub of Creme Fraiche
1 x Lemon
Olive oil
Butter
Salt and Pepper
Greens as a side ( I steam kale and spinach and add lemon juice on top)
METHOD:
- Heat over to 180 degrees
- Place chicken in roasting tray and cut open skin down centre of the chicken. Place cubes of butter under the skin. Squeeze the juice of the lemon over the chicken and place the lemon inside the chicken carcass. Add salt and pepper all over.
- Put chicken in the oven roast. T-1hour until ready remove the chicken from the oven and place the halved new potatoes around the tray. Cover with some olive oil, salt and pepper and put back in the oven for 20 minutes.
- At the T-40 min point, remove chicken again. Make up the two chicken stock cubes with one cup of boiling water and five tablespoons of creme fraiche. Mixture together unless creme friache is dissolved. Add the can of drained butterbeans and cauliflower florets to the roasting pan and the drizzle the chicken stock creme fraiche mixture all over. Give the vegetables a big stir so they are coated in the jus.
- Cook for a final 40 minutes (or until chicken and potatoes are fully cooked through) and remove from the oven serve up with steamed greens. I love steamed kale and spinach with lemon juice squeezed on top.

It's blown my mind that this is exactly what I want to do with our kitchen when we complete on our new house, as we will need a temporary fix before reno' for a kitchen that looks SO much like your 'before'. And your 'after' is exactly what I had in mind for ours!

Tip for next time. Paint a section off lining paper using the paint you have chosen. Then place the paper on the wall or areas with blu tac and in different lights and it will save you a lot off time if you decide to change your mind. I do love your taste

You always look so great on camera! How cute are you guys...team work = dream work. Love the white on the walls & the stick on counter top paper & vinyl floors look reall great. i must admit that I am not a fan of that camouflage green kitchen cabinet color with the new black handles, and perhaps the vinyl floors should have been placed in a horizontal layout to give the illusion of more width instead of accentuating the length & bowling alley feel of the galley kitchen, but overall really nice work you guys. really just appreciate your sharing your renovations & how honest you are about the process & results. great job.

Hey this video is great! What was your opinion on the vinyl flooring in the kitchen once you lived with it? did it peel/curl up at any point before the full Reno? Im about to do alot of upcycling and you're videos have been great for tips and idea
@Jessroseparr
@Jessroseparr 2 года назад
hey thanks so much! I thought it was great quality it actually lasted so long even once they begun knocking down our kitchen during the refurb and it had to be prised up by our builders. The only damage to it prior to refurb was our washing machine flooded and it did loosen the planks around that area. so I would just be super careful of water. you're not meant to steam mop it but we did very regularly and had no issue with water then just with the actual flood xx

Great job, how durable is the worktop cover? We need to do ours. Will a hot cup of tea melt the plastic film?
@Jessroseparr
@Jessroseparr 2 года назад
thank you! it was pretty durable I always used to put pans on it and it never melted. The one thing I would say is if you didn't perfectly cut the corners eventually they will start to peel as water seeps in when you run a cloth over them. but for £6 a roll they did a great job for a year and a half before doing our renovation

I loved everything. How is the worktop after a year?
@Jessroseparr
@Jessroseparr 3 года назад
thank you! the stick on stuff is SO strong. it's worn really well in places that we did it properly. But the cut around the hob we overshot it a bit and now it's peeled back so when doing it it's essential you get the cuts right down to the exact millimetre. The stuff we bought wasn't expensive so it's worth a bit of trial and error but if you're buying pricier stick on worktops I'd definitely recommend hiring a tradesperson so apply it. xx

I think the cabinets looked fine unpainted, all they needed is new hardware. Also, the countertop was great before you applied the tacky marble effect paper. Then again why make all those changes if you are going to replace everything again in a few months.
@Jessroseparr
@Jessroseparr 4 года назад
nycgraphist thanks for your thoughts. I guess we all have different interior taste don’t we 😀
@nycgraphist
@nycgraphist 4 года назад
Jess, you are right, there is no accounting for taste. ☺️ (It actually looks quite good After too.) But how sustainable is it, how is it good for the environment, when in just a few months all that will be discarded? The question here is how we can collectively minimize our consumerist footprint for the benefit of sustaining the planet. This is something for us all to consider, not just you, of course. I understand that a few rolls of sticky paper and buckets of paint are nothing in comparison to the damage many corporations are doing to the environment. But if we as end consumers start buying less, they will produce less thus limiting unearthing of the natural resources. Good luck to you both.
