Better remove that tag. It is starting to girdle the tree.

Thanks for the heads up! I appreciate that. 😎

Do you have a Black Madeira or Bursa Black? Want to know how well they do here in AZ.

We do not but I have a friend near us and they say the figs love our heat. They have a fibrous root systems so they done like to dry out when newly planted. After about 3 summers they are 'drout tolerant'.

I just started figs this spring; one is a small Black Mission. It's nice to see what it can turn into, although mine will stay in a pot since I'm in the Northeast, Connecticut. zone 7a with winter temperatures sometimes in the single digits or below. How has the summer been this year compared to last year for your trees?

Welcome to growing figs! Fig trees do great in pots. We have two in pots right now. Just 1 year cuttings. Hopefully it will fruit this fall or next spring.

All of our fig varieties are doing well with our heat. I hear they can handle a lot hotter! Our average morning low for the past 2 months has been 94°f - 34°c. If you haven't visited PHX this time of year, it's hard to imagine just how consistently HOT it is. Thank goodness for our luxury of air conditioning.

Hey I just saw a Desert King and Brown Turkey at Home Depot. Have you ever had those? Wondering if they are any good. I heard the Desert King is very productive.

Yes we have both of those, they love the Heat and are in a very hot & windy spot on our property. This will be the second summer, we are already getting ready to harvest Desert King figs, brown turkey fig is just starting to push out tiny figs now. If you see them, get them!

Here in Las Vegas, I'm keeping my black mission in a large pot against a western wall. We can get hard freezes here. How do you keep these ant free, as the little darlings are attracted to the figs? I use dried coffee grounds.
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard 10 месяцев назад
We place ant traps at the base of the trunk. In about 3 days they are all gone.

Are you growing fruit trees? Or fig trees?

It looks so healthy ❤I need to research figs for my area and see if they’re work here. I’m zone 9b but we get no heat in the summer.
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
I believe most fig varieties are anywhere between 100 and 150 chill hours. And a lot of them are also Frost resistant. We get about 300 a year, this past fall, winter, spring I think we got close to 800! I've noticed ours are hit and miss with varieties loving the heat. Some love it and thrive while others struggle.

@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard wow that is a lot of fruit 💚We don’t get any heat. We are lucky to get some days in the 70’s during August and September. I’m sitting in my car right now in a sweater as it’s 58f degrees at 12:50 pm lol. Figs in the yard would be amazing 😊
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
If you do try a fig variety, I can suggest the Chicago hardy, it does love the cooler weather. Find the warmest sunniest spot you have and see if it works!

How do you find sun protection for a fig tree the first year in Arizona heat?
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
We make it out of shade screen and what we have on hand. We have left over rebar from other trees and reuse it to support the shade screen so it doesn't blow away in the wind.
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
We will make a video about that very soon! I'll show you how it works for us.

How far away from the block wall are the trees planted?
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
Most of our trees around the perimeter of our property are planted anywhere between 12 in and 24 inches away from the wall. Two of our trees are about 3 ft away from the wall and those trees are 30 ft tall 30 ft wide.

@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyardthanks for the reply. I'm planning on planting some of my container trees in ground along our west facing block wall here in the valley. Just trying to figure a good distance.

It got pretty bad here in south Mississippi to, some of the hottest days and no rain for like 6 weeks at a time. It was frying everything, I had to water almost every day and the humidity is unreal!!! So hot and still is in
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
My heart goes out to you all in the South. That high pressure this summer was not budging and was cooking everybody hardcore.
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard
We lost a lot of our 1st year shrubs by not sun protecting them. Rookie mistake. Shade screen is legit and saves lives..
