The Differences Between Blue, Black and Celeste

First.. why do we even care about Celeste? What makes it so special? Well... it's easily one of the most humid climate tolerant figs in existence. Having a teardrop shape allows it to shed water easily, it rarely if ever splits, has minor cracking and has a high enough brix content to using avoid fermentation and spoilage. All great traits in humid climates. However not all Celeste figs are created equal...
They can in fact be quite different even though some may share parentage or be related in some way. The flavor on some however may not be all that different. As most of these fall in the sugar fig category.
Celeste vs. Blue Celeste - As I currently understand it.. I'm not sure there is a whole lot of difference genetically. As Jon Verdick mentions here: figs4funforum.a... - "Generally, I propagate from Celeste JN, GM, IS, and Blue Celeste JN. Those are my favorites, which is why I propagate them. Fruit drop has not been an issue with any Celeste in my collection. USDA / UC Davis DNA testing indicates all of the Celestes and Blue Celestes are the same (I think we tested 19 different ones), but performance here is not the same." So I kind of think of them like HC types. They may be genetically equal, but show different characteristics. Some much more than others, which is where I think the whole "Blue" Celeste comes into play because some Celeste figs will not turn blue. Typically these are sugar figs. Some with concord grape berry notes. So far some of the standout Celeste strains are: The One, Stallion, Sweet Diana, Bill's Patrick Supergiant "Not" & Violette de Marseille. I'd like to grow some of the strains Jon is recommending at some point to compare.

You've been talking about Blue Celeste for some time. I love that fig!! the color of the leaves alone is gorgeous. I have one in the ground in 6b. Now I wish I saved cuttings. it's a special fig. It's a funny thing, with honey figs for example, there are some complex varieties, like Izbat, or comparable varieties like Lattarula, but Peter's Honey is just so solid and special like Lou says. I feel the same way about Blue Celeste, so many other figs are comparable but it's just more special in a way that's hard to describe unless you own the tree.

I noticed the bluish color on some Celeste trees in the 70s in Louisiana. My just plain Celeste trees have both long 5 finger-like leaves and some shield shaped ones with slightly jagged edges. They came in a 4-pack. None have three wide lobes like the leaves shown here. I did see my tree`s leaves shown as Celeste on a fig grower`s site. It`s puzzling trying to be sure you got what you ordered but they came from a Florida nursery. They didn`t fruit this year. They began growing fig nubs and those dried up and died. Maybe next year. They`re in the ground and most are in very poor soil in a hard packed gravel and red clay old parking spot but I`m creating mounds of compost around them of a mix of layers of all sorts of green and brown organic matter, forest debris and forest soil and topping with thick pine straw and leaves before winter. They`re small enough to cover if we get a bad freeze in Louisiana this year. No rain all summer so it`s daily watering to establish roots.

A lot of people think that 'Malta Black' is a strain of 'Celeste', the leaves are way more like 'Celeste' and so on, I forget the details off the top of my head. I personally think that it was named 'Malta Black' because 'Malta Black' reminded someone of the 'Celeste strain' called 'Malta'. Apparently in some climates 'Malta Black' does not have 'Celeste' like leaves, and instead has Mount Etna kind of leaves, I suppose that it could be a hybrid of both 'Celeste', and some Mount Etna like fig.

I have a Celeste in south Mississippi and it is taller then my house, it's to the roof and equally as wide and I've taken hundreds of cuttings. It's an amazing tree.
