I love the Lyra by Tilly and the buttons. I’m in the buttons, some kind of collar (even mandarin) and waist seam/band/shaping camp. In my mind a shirt dress needs to be kind of like a men’s white shirt they wore to the office in the 1940’s. But the sleeves, type of collar and skirt could be up to design choice.
The filippa by Fibre Mood is one of my favourite shirt dresses as it is so quick to sew up!! I think the definition of a shirt dress which something which looks like a shirt if you cut it into a top and bottom
I tried clicking on your link to the blog post and got an error 404. Love your podcast and videos! Thanks for all you do to educate and promote sewing!
For me, a shirt dress is a dress shaped like an extra-long shirt, that you might cinch at the waist with a belt. It wouldn't have a waist seam. It would have collar and cuffs. It looks distinctively like menswear, but in dress. That's why I've always loved them.
A shirt dress borrows details from a traditional man's shirt, but which details are borrowed is up to the designer's interpretation. There is such a variety of styles that there really is something for everyone!
Hi Sarai, hi Haley! Can you please share the details on your beautiful shirt dresses? 🙏 I’d also love to see ideas on how to hack seamwork dresses to get those looks! 😍 (A blogpost or vid would be amazing!!)
Sarai is wearing a vintage pattern, and Haley has on a Ready to Wear dress. You could lengthen the Roan to make it into a shirt dress similar to Haley's, and adding a belt to Chantelle would give a look close to Sarai's dress. Thanks so much for watching!
Super cute dresses. My favorite ready to wear shirt dress is by Gary graham I get tons of compliments then I wear it though the fight to keep the girls from busting out is intense. So looking forward to trying Chantelle now that I've opened my mind to shirt dresses. 💞 I am very short at 5ft so I don't know they always made me feel like I was wearing a shirt that was too big on me and no pants. Like Winnie the pooh 😂
It’s 6:20pm ET here, and your link isn’t working for me. Buttons, buttons, buttons make a shirt dress for me! I’m happy to see the one with the curved neckline because I like to mix things up! Even if it’s not technically a “shirt” dress with a collar, I love that neckline on me. 😊
I think a traditional shirt dress, needs a collar and buttons, however a more modern shirt dress can be scoop neck, but without the bottom up, but still needs some sort of sleeve and a fitted shape.
Thanks for your feedback! You can always slow down the video speed if you find the scrolling too jarring, or check out the hashtags on Instagram so you can scroll at your own pace!
IMO Hughes is not a shirt dress. At all. Scoop neck. I'm here because I'm searching for a pattern that would make something like the terrific $400 princess seam shirt dress I tried on recently. No luck so far. Chantelle is too short and shift-like in silhouette, and the collar is smaller than what I'm after. Did you happen to see any patterns for a longer dress with princess seams and a generous collar, preferably with a partial stand?
The Lenox shirt dress could be lengthened easily -- it has princess seams and a banded collar. You can find info on how to lengthen/shorten a pattern here: www.seamwork.com/articles/how-to-lengthen-and-shorten-a-sewing-pattern
