Culinary student here. In the kitchen I call the "pancake flipper" a spatula and then the "spatula" a rubber spatula. Also, no one tell Emily about off-set spatulas

As a chef, I call them a spatula, and a rubber spat (ula). On a different note, Ed being so excited for the eggs is a far cry difference from how shy and quiet he was at the beginning of the channel. Makes a heart happy.

I looked it up: it looks like they're both spatulas, just one would be considered a flipper/turner, the other scraper (and there are also froster/icing spatulas)! It looks like spatulas come in all shapes, sizes, and materials 🤷‍♀️

As a person who works in a kitchen: one is a ‘spatula’, the “pancake flipper” is a ‘slotted spatula’.

The so called pancake flipper is called a "stekspade" in Swedish and literally is translated to "frying-shovel".

In Swedish the silicone spatulas are called slickepott (licky-pot), the plastic ones for cooking are called stekspade (pan shovel) and the thin metal ones used to ice a cake are called spatel (spatula).

The rubber spatula thing is called a Slickepott in Swedish, because you usually use it to get the last of the dough/mixture out of the bowl/lick the bowl clean. It's also called a Slickepott since many lick the last remnants off of the spatula since mostly the dough/mixture that you're making is very tasty^^ The regular spatula we just call a Stekspade

Fun fact! In spanish you can call the rubber spatula “lengua” wich means tongue, because it “licks” the dishes leaving nothing behind 😂

I took foods class in high school and we were taught that they are both spatulas but ones called a rubber spatula which is used for baking so for icing and the other is typically a metal spatula for pancakes or burgers

Theres accually three kinds of spatulas. Burger flippers which are made of metal, pancake flippers which are made of silicone, and baking spatulas which are also silicone but they have an rounded edge to get the last of batter out from the bowls

We realised how wild the english language is when we had a kitchen misommunication where he asked for a "spatula" aaand I handed him the flipping variety. It's impressive how varied people's experiences with words can be based on geographic location (we both grew up in different states). I only knew the "flipper" type as a spatula, and apparently the "scraper" I grew up with was actually a spatula too... soo weird!

I don’t know about in America, but in Australia the “pancake flipper” and the spatula used for scraping things are both called “spatulas”. It’s like how we also just call both fries and packet chips “chips”.

As far as culinary school goes we were taught egg flip and spatula, I personally call them both spatulas or occasionally call the silicon one a bowl scraper

In Germany we say „Pfannenwender“ for the Metal one and „Teigschaber“ for the Silicone one

There's a slotted spatula, a rubber spatula, a solid spatula, a straight edge spatula (like the ones used for cake icing, the metal ones). That's just the names I've always been taught to call them but to each their own
