Buddy and Winston know we are quite likely to mess things up, so they supervise the second part of the septic tank installation. This is part two of installing our cube septic tank for our temporary caravan home.
These septic tanks are available from www.septic-tanks-emptied.co.uk

Every step you two take is very gratifying for the armchair watcher. I don't know why, but your project and energies have captured my heart. Maybe it's the awesome station and garden. Maybe it's the cute doggies. Maybe it's your lovely gentle manner on the videos. Maybe it's hubby's willingness to take on anything. I dunno. It's just magical. 🧡💛💚

I visited a great reclamation yard today in Bridgend, all I could think about was that you absolutely have to visit there. Lots of stuff that I’m sure would be perfect for your fabulous station. It’s called Theodore’s sons and daughters.

Brilliant, thanks for this! I used to work not far from here so know the area well, although I didn’t know about this yard. We’ll get over there in the next few weeks for a look around.

Regarding all the mud between the caravan and the rest of the world, if there is any additional carpet in the station you don't plan to keep pull it up and throw it across your paths. You can always remove it later (or it breaks down) , it gives you a much cleaner experience. It might still be wet but you won't sink in it
@theoldstationrenovation
@theoldstationrenovation Месяц назад
There’s a bit we’ve taken out of the station that we could use but even though there is a lot of mud, between the platforms, the chippings and the paving it can be quite easily avoided.

Here in Ecuador we don't flush the toilet paper. Sounds bad I know but keeps the pipes from clogging up. Just keep a sealed garbage container beside the toilet and throw away frequently.
@theoldstationrenovation

That makes sense, nothing worse than blocked pipes and overflowing toilets!!
@Vault57
@Vault57 2 месяца назад
Flushing toilet paper (toilet roll) is pretty much a bad thing for most septic systems, especially ones with small storage/processing capabilities. This particular system may work well for small-scale use, but loading it with extra material wouldn't be advisable. A septic treatment may be in order to maintain the system's balance.

I believe Wales has a more temperate climate than Ontario, Canada. But it's hard to compare the climates between Europe & North America: I was surprised to find that Portland, OR is the same latitude as the French Riviera -- yet the climate here is closer to southern Britain. I would be sure and remove all the bamboo roots as they are invasive and will grow into the system. They love the water and the human fertilizer . I have had them grow through my asphalt drive. Also I would made sure to have a good angle to the tank so there is no standing water in the pipe and bury the pipe to the tank to protect it from freezing.
@theoldstationrenovation
@theoldstationrenovation 2 месяца назад
The bamboo is a nightmare, I just keep finding more! The tank had to be at a slight angle as per the instructions so hopefully that means no standing water. My next job is to bury them, hopefully we’ll have about eight months before we get any freezing weather…. that said we’re in Wales so it could freeze a lot sooner!!

I had a panic that the septic tank was the wrong way round, but when I had a think about the ones I have installed, it actually isnt!! I used to put in the conrete sectional type which had an inlet tee and an outlet tee so that the incoming didnt disturb the top layer of scum which seals the air out of the liquid below, the bacteria that do the work are anerobic, and exposure to air makes them go dormant or die. The vent is to get rid of the methane they produce as they break down the solids, and the liquid that runs to the soakaway makes excellent fertiliser! Good job! Enjoyed the video! Phil

@@theoldstationrenovation the cost of a drain connection to the mains, even if one is available will be high, and of course ongoing. A properly maintained septic tank is a very good alternative! I got the septic tank/ digester bug in the seventies reading “ the mother earth book of home made power” you get three outputs from a septic tank, a high grade liquid fertiliser, an innocuous odourless solid that can go straight onto the garden as it is sterile but contains lots of nutrients, and methane you can cook with! Remember if a septic tank smells bad it is not working! Good luck with it all! Phil

The pipes on the tank look strange. Apparently the rules aren't as strict in the UK but according to what I've been taught the in and out pipes are exactly the wrong way round with the straight pipe as the inlet and the bell end on the outflow. Had it been the other way round you wouldn't have needed that slip coupler on the inlet. Installing the pipes this way round creates small lips inside the pipe that solids can snag on and cause blockages. The pipes are also slightly more likely to leak.
@theoldstationrenovation

Absolutely, as soon as it’s level we’ll get it seeded and see if we can get a nice lawn growing.

As long as the pipe slopes down from the caravan it should be fine. I would have preferred it to be deeper but the earth is so hard on the trackbed the digger just couldn’t get through!

We put bacteria in our septic tank. It helps break down organic material and reduces overflow. Is that something you can use in yours?

Thank you for the tip, is that like yeast?
@carolemg

@@theoldstationrenovation No, these are bacteria specific to septic tanks. In France, we use a product to start the tank and then we "feed" it every month. The professionals who installed my tank told me not to bother buying special septic tank products in the shops and to use 2 plain yoghurts that I leave to ferment outside for a few days and then put in my toilet.

We do too. We get ours from the septic clean out guy who comes once every few years. The instructions are to put 7 scoops to start it then a scoop every month.

Those two dogs were not great supervisors, they showed no leadership whats so ever, the other supervisor was sitting down on the job😃 seriously guys that whole place is coming together very nicely, what about a crop of spudx to get the ground turned over? Very best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les

Ok, I'm mildly confused. Not, you understand, an unusual situation. Aren't you supposed to fill those boxes with gravel as part of the filtration system? What filters the runoff if the boxes are empty? Obviously, most technology boggles my mind. Congratulations on your septic system! I look forward to your next project!

@@theoldstationrenovation The soak away crates are still supposed to be bedded and covered (not filled with gravel. This just helps it drain out into the surrounding soil. You might get away with it as it’s temporary but you may also create a bog.
