This video is about our experience with feline asthma and it doesn't contain medical advice. If your cat has asthma or any other symptoms, please make an appointment with your vet for a consultation.
Roy was diagnosed with feline asthma in July 2021. His diagnosis was frightening and a relief at the same time as we finally knew why he was coughing so much. Roy was amazing during the inhaler training. He was mostly confused about the whole thing but he enjoyed getting more snacks. In the end, he got used to it and it's part of our life now.

I really like the way you were patient and tried to get him used to the inhaler before you put it on him. I think if I were in the same situation I might not have done things the same way and caused my cat unnecessary stress. You did a great job. Thank you for the great teaching tool!

Thanks for this one, I think it was a great educational video. First, showing the coughing will help others recognize the possible difficulties. Second, that was a wonderful process of getting Roy to willingly accept the treatment. I hope Roy (and Moss) remain healthy and enjoys life to the fullest.

@@RoyandMoss I do (and did), indeed, find it useful. I've always been a "dog guy" but adopted a pair of cats in my newest home instead because I did not want a fence and didn't have the time to walk a dog two or three times a day. That was 18 years ago and I still don't feel like I "understand" cats. This helps. My remaining cat does not seem to have asthma but she throws up several times a week. It's undiagnosed, but NOT because of hair balls. Roy and Moss are *_incredibly_* handsome cats. I cannot tell them apart except by behavior. Both are clever, but they are different in they way they interact with toys and food. I might not comment often but I very much thank you for your postings! Long Live Roy and Moss _( and their servants!! :-)_

Cat asthma is not a common disease therefore some vets are not familiar with the diagnosis and the treatment. If you live close to a bigger vet clinic/hospital it worth to ask them if they have vets who are specialized in feline asthma or similar diseases. I hope you can find out what's causing the cough.

This is such a wonderful video, thank you so much for making it! Showing large parts of the teaching process is invaluable, too. My sweet girl of 20 years passed almost 10 years ago (gosh, so long?), and she had asthma from an early age. Her attacks were very pronounced, and honestly scary to see, but the same exact behaviour symptoms Roy shows. I'm SO glad you caught it so early! Later stages are just heartbreaking to witness. This was sadly before we had any kitty nebulizers, and while oral steroids did help, they weren't a great choice long-term because they dampened her immune system, and she didn't have a lot of one to begin with. We wound up with daily oral doses of really small (like, fragments of tablet because they don't come in any lower dosages size small) tablets of Prednisone, combined with some lifestyle changes. Try pilling a cat every day for 20 years ;) They get wise awfully quickly. I wish we'd had something like this, though. Her attacks were fewer with the Prednisone, but they were still violent and scary to witness as she'd be gasping for air with heaves that wracked her whole body. There being NOTHING I could do to help was awful. Then she'd be up and bouncing off the walls again like nothing had happened, cats are so danged resilient. But she had a lot of damage in her lungs from the chronic asthma, and every attack closed them up just a tiny bit more, until she was panting while playing with a toy for only a few minutes. We had to take a lot of breaks, and she protested very mightily, the bean! Many years later, I now have a dear boy whose only goal in life is to be snuggled, so I work hard ensuring his goals are met. But it's so wonderful knowing something like this exists.
@RoyandMoss
@RoyandMoss Год назад
Thank you! I'm sorry that you didn't have other options to treat her asthma but she was a strong girl. Despite her diagnosis she lived a long life. We are really fortunate that inhalers are available not only for humans but cats too! I hope your boy stays healthy and gets snuggles as much as he wants for years to come.

I read that some cats have other symptoms too, like wheezing. We were lucky that he had mild to moderate symptoms and the inhaler helped him right away. We have tried to rule out possible triggers but we are still not sure. However, it started after we had moved to another apartment...so it might be stress related.

@RoyandMoss Год назад
I'm sorry that you had to go through this with your cat. It's a terrible disease. :( You are right, coughing can be a sign of heart condition and asthma medication can make it even worse so a heart specialist did an ultrasound scan before we started his asthma treatment. His blood was also checked for infections and he had a lung x-ray as well. Fortunately, his heart was strong and healthy and every result indicated asthma. He responded very well to the asthma medication and now he is symptom free. Oh and their parents were tested for HCM and they were negative.

Is it a lifelong treatment where you must give him the Aerokat every day?
@RoyandMoss
@RoyandMoss 8 месяцев назад
Vets say that it's not a curable condition so he probably needs medication for the rest of his life. Even though it's a progressive disease, he can live a long life with it, we just need to take care of him. We noticed that his condition fluctuates so if he has no symptoms (coughing) for weeks, we try to lower his dose. Sometimes he's fine with the lower dose for months but if he starts to show symptoms again, we increase his dose. Fortunately, he has stayed stable for two years now, he had no serious asthma attacks and we could manage any flare ups easily. The goal is to keep him this way for many years :)
@larl123
@larl123 8 месяцев назад
@@RoyandMoss Thank you so much for the answer. FYI I'm asking because my cat was just diagnosed, just bought the Aerokat. I'm curious, at the lowest dose, do you still administer at least once a day, or do you sometimes go once a week or anything like that?
@RoyandMoss
@RoyandMoss 8 месяцев назад
I'm sorry to hear that your cat has asthma. I hope the training with the inhaler will go smoothly. :) I'm happy to answer any questions but my experience with treating asthma can be different as vets protocols can vary in other countries. Roy has two types of asthma medication. A short acting bronchodilatator that is for occasional asthma attacks. He has never had an asthma attack (difficulty breathing) before so we've never used this medication but we have it just in case he had a really bad episode. His daily medication is a long acting anti-inflammatory steroid inhaler. It's called Axotide here but the brand name can be different in other countries. As it's a long acting medication, we need to give him at least once a day to maintain a therapeutic level. When he started his treatment two years ago, he got 1 puff in the morning and 1 in the evening. We could see improvement after 1-2 weeks, his symptoms significantly decreased. The highest dose was 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. At the beginning, I spoke to the vet as soon as Roy experienced flare-ups or any improvements and that's how we learned to manage the dosage. Now, the rule is that we need to speak to the vets in case the highest dose (2-2 in the morning and evening) would no longer work for him or he had any new alarming symptoms.

I'm sorry that after watching this video, your takeaway is that we took this problem lightly and we started medicating him without exploring other possibilities. My message is completely the opposite. As I mentioned in the video, at first we also thought that he had a hairball problem but the cough became so frequent that we couldn't explain his symptoms with a simple hairball anymore. Roy was examined by specialists and they ruled out other possible problems and diseases which could cause a cough or cough-like symptoms. After we started the treatment, he slowly but surely began to improve and now his symptoms are almost completely gone. If it was a hairball problem, he wouldn't have reacted to the asthma medication. He also gets malt paste daily.
