Our family in Hawaii experienced COVID-19 a few weeks ago and I just wanted to make a follow-up video on our experience, symptoms, day-to-day timeline, and recovery. To make things a little more complicated, my wife is pregnant and we have a two-year-old. Thank you and mahalo for all of the wonderful messages and comments during this time. It was very encouraging. The Hawaii State Department of Health also reached out to us with some questions for an article they are writing. I figured we'd share our answers to those questions in this video as well.
And again, thank you to the health care workers, Department of Health, St. Francis, and Kaiser Permanente Hawaii for all that they do to keep Hawaii and its residents healthy.
I hope this video serves as a reminder that COVID is still happening in Hawaii, even if we don't see the daily counts. Please continue to be safe as life in Hawaii continues to return back to normal.

Appreciate the commentary. Indeed, testimonials of personal experiences are impactful. Real talk without coming off as fear mongering or patronizing. Wanna be hopeful and encouraging, but also diligent, vigilant, and proactive. There's been a spectrum of desensitization, denial, apathy, and anxiousness. Trying to find the middle ground in navigating this grayer time of the pandemic has proven that public health communication is not easy. Continue to stay safe!

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s practical, real world experience. It’s helpful to know. I continue to hear about friends and co-workers testing positive but there isn’t much dialogue about it, especially with many co-workers still working remotely. We just get announcements that someone in the office tested +. We are only notified directly if in direct contact w/that person. Stay safe and well and very best wishes for your family!

I am so glad that the three of you are on the brighter side of this and recovering. And thank you for sharing your story. It's always better to have a face with the statistic. I have managed to avoid covid so far, but I have lost several friends and even more relatives. So this is a very real situation. Thanks again

THANK YOU SO MUCH for being open to share a bit about your COVID journey. Hearing how your wife went through the initial symptoms while pregnant is so helpful. This video gives the practical, on what having COVID really like - you guys have helped demystify the onset and recovery, as it can feel scary. Glad all of you are in full recovery and are feeling much, much better. Sorry again, that you guys caught it in the first place. Blessing to you all.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It was linked to an email that I receive from the health department. I am a senior and appreciate the real life testimony from your family. I've been vaccinated and boosted 4 times altogether but have found myself getting lax about masking. I really don't want to get sick especially because of my friends who are older and more frail than me. I DO NOT want to get them sick accidentally. So a big Mahalo!

I’m happy you all are on the mend. Hearing about your experience, I think, was reassuring - especially for local folks who could expect similar circumstances. Not that it was pleasant, but that you got such good care, and that all your shots worked to keep you all out of the hospital. Mahalo for sharing your experiences.

Glad to hear you and your family are recovering well. I had covid early in the pandemic before vaccines were available and experienced symptoms similar to those you had with the exception of having some difficulty breathing for a duration of about nine days, my cough lasted for several months but I am fully recovered now. I am 70 yrs old and fortunately in good health so age wasn't a factor.I continue to watch for different variants and spikes and avoid exposure when the risks are greatest, so far so good.

Good to know that your family is doing better. It's very challenging for families as it affects every member in one way or another. Having the home test kits really help as it's something we can self-administer if you suspect potential COVID-19 exposure.

Thank You for sharing your families experience. I'm glad you are all doing good. My Mom was in the long term care center and she contracted covid from her room mate. My mom had her vaccine and booster, so she didn't have any symptoms... Not even a fever... But Mom ended passing from covid 5 days from being diagnosed... Never thought I would lose someone "really" close to me to covid...

Wishing you guys full recovery. One of my forner co-workers and her husband got COVID the first year, she now is a long hauler, experiencing breathing issues and constant fatigue. She caught it before any vaccine were available, this could be part of the problem.

Glad you and your family are getting better! Case counts are no longer a reliable measure of Covid cases, especially since home test kits are not part of the count. My husband has been monitoring the waste water activity in our area, which can detect Covid prevalence better than test kits. Very informative video. Thank you.

Really glad to see you guys are fully recovered, the symptoms described are typical, and regarding those Covid tests, sometimes they are not very reliable; also been hearing that Covid positively rate has been going higher in Hawaii and they might encourage people to start wearing masks during gatherings. Since Hawaii has fully opened up for travel, this was kind of expected.

Thank you for sharing this. I returned home from Hawaii with my Granddaughter and I noticed that she had a stuffy nose and cough on the plane at the beginning of the trip. Those were her only symptoms. I wore a mask on our long flights and still got a sore throat and a night time cough 3days later. I did not have Home tests with me. I didn’t feel it was bad so didn’t feel the need to test. Once I got home after 10 days away .. symptoms were pretty much gone. But I used ah home test and it was positive

Mahalo for the video! Yokatta that you and your family (especially your pregnant wife) didn’t get severe disease and are nearly fully recovered. Being young and not having other chronic medical conditions or immune compromise is a factor in full Covid recovery (although pregnant women are more vulnerable). However, I concur that the vaccines protect against severe disease, hospitalization and death (but not infection by new subvariants with mild symptoms). There are multiple, well-designed vaccine efficacy studies showing large, statistically significant reductions in severe disease rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals in a population. As a medical professional in the civilian and military community, hearing your experience from a “real world” situation (along with medical expert Public Health guidance) is especially impactful. Thank you for sharing, stay safe and best wishes for a healthy baby!

Nice to see you all survived but I’m curious did the state pay you to make this video? Also how do you know if being vaccinated and getting COVID was less severe than those who aren’t? Did you have it while you were unvaccinated? I’ve seen a lot of people say this but most unvaccinated people I know haven’t gotten it at all. If you’re basing your answer off of what you see on the news I’d take that with a grain of salt.
@HelloFromHawaii
@HelloFromHawaii 2 года назад
Didn't get paid to make this video. Just wanted to share our experience. I can only speculate about the severity of the symptoms, since we only had COVID this one time. It's an assumption I'm making, but I think a pretty good assumption with what we know.

I am on a cruise ship alot of cases we get isolated in a cabin for 5 to 10 days with excellent room service. Feels more like a post nasal drip no involuntary coughing. fever or taste problem just a cold that anyone can usually live with.Problem was Spain changed rules to be to lax late April so their locals partied iin masses to celebrate affecting anyone around.
