You probably have found out by now. But the two throttle valves at the top of the schematic that you left out are actually somewhat important for efficient operation. They increase the pressure swing of the absorber columns and improve the mass of Nitrogen the columns can absorb in one step and can give off in the next. And I think the volume of the hoses at the feed side of the columns is unnecessarily big. That volume needs to be purged every cycle and consumes a lot of air. Having individual 5/2 valves directly at the columns would be more efficient.

Just a thought on the cooler setup: Should you run into Problems with the actual setup, it might be an idea to use a charge air Intercooler, as these are usually designed to handle positive pressure, also the can handle liquid (which in normal operation would be oil). Really good explanation on the machine and although it is purpose made, I really like the 'modular' aspect. Great job!

Something is strange here. The cycle of this machine is different than the commercial machines. I use two commercial machines that are over 20 years old and have 20,000 hours on them and still produce over 90% concentration. There is no water handling at all in the machines and humidity has no effect on the output. (humidity is HORRIBLE here in Houston TX where I live!) Possibly the type of sieve is the reason. Mine use 13X lithium sieve. That is different than what is used here.

Interesting! This concentrator operates a different way than those I am using. I wonder if this is why this design seems to be so sensitive to humidity. I have no problem at all with humidity affecting the output of mine. (Humidity here in Houston TX is AWFUL in the summer!) The sieve in my machines is over 20 years old and is still working fine. Great job on the machine!

@@xpiyrw2374 Mine works on pressure selective separation. The sieve canister is compressed with fresh air. The nitrogen binds more to the sieve than the oxygen. The pressure is released through two valves. The first is the oxygen valve, which lets the pressure drop while the oxygen is expelled. Then the valves switch and the pressure is allowed to bleed all the way down as the nitrogen is expelled. The oxygen goes to the outlet, the nitrogen back to the atmosphere.

Dalibor, what is your cold tap water temperature? You may be able to lower the dew point of the incoming air using a water to air heat exchanger. Alternatively a refrigeration cycle might work if water is expensive or scarse. You can buy commercial air driers. In the US they are common in pneumatic control systems. A silica gell bed with a color change indicator could be used as well. A two bed system would allow you to regenerate the wet bed, while it's neighbor was in use. There are also automatic water drains that have a float that drains water without wasting oxygen. What are you using for fuel gas? It looks like you are using acetylene. We used to use hydrogen as a fuel gas. With no carbon there was less contamination of things like the wires going through the tube seal. Since you need both o2 and h2, what about using electrolysis to generate both gasses at once?
@peterciurea7771
@peterciurea7771 3 года назад
I wonder if it's possible to also capture the "exhaust" air. In theory, just as you are concentrating Oxygen in the gas you keep, you are, in effect, concentrating Nitrogen in the gas you exhaust. So could the same machine be able to generate nitrogen? i suppose sending it to a further cooler for Liquid nitrogen or collecting it as a shielding gas for welding/laser cutting?

However in your cart could you replace the six for say two larger capacity compressors but still feeding the same manifold? The 3 way valve was an excellent idea, you could add moisture sensors inline to each tank that could over ride the valve port and close that unit and light a service lamp! (One of yours of course 😊)

@glasslinger
@glasslinger 3 года назад
The 13X sieve is not sensitive to humidity like the lithium sieve used here. You do not have to pump the oxygen out, it will flow by itself by virtue of the pressure used to charge the sieve bed. Note that there is an upper pressure limit to the process. Going above this pressure is useless, producing no more oxygen but using up power. This could overheat your sieves.

Yes, I used a similar capillary tube permeable membrane unit to generate high quality nitrogen to be used as an inert fill gas for a packaging line, which worked out cheaper than using tanked or cylinder nitrogen, and which had a break even point after 6 months. Just needed a 6 bar supply of very clean air, so had a cascaded series of filters for it. First 2 were regular air filters from the pneumatics supplier, to remove oil and water, and then a 0.3 micron filter after that to get more out. Then 2 cascaded ultra filtration units which got the feed air down to the desired cleanliness. I used to change those filters every 3 months, throw the first one away, and move the second one to the first bowl, and put the new one in the final position. The first filter would be dirty, but in general the second would stay very clean. Took the oxygen down from 21% to around 2%, though you could get to 99% but only at lower flow rates, so the 98% with a higher flow rate was better, as it was able to purge the packing area more effectively, and the product entering there would get most of the oxygen removed from around it during the pack cycle, and finish off at around 4% oxygen, which made shelf life a lot better. Yes i did use an oxygen sensor, but after the testing it was not used again, as it only has a operational life of 6 months once opened to air, as it is an electrochemical cell, and replacement ones were extremely expensive, as it was EEX rated.

He shows this in the video. Output from the six compressors gets sent through a car radiator on the side of his machine. The pipes through the radiator are oriented vertically. When the air is cooled, water drips down (and out a port on the bottom), dry air moves up. He also runs it through an additional water separator before the air hits the zeolite tubes.

Some compressed air dehumidifiers work in a very similar way but with silica gel instead of zeolite. Would it be possible to have it deal with the moisture issue by adding silica gel cylinders ahead of the zeolite cylinders?
@richardohare7708
@richardohare7708 3 года назад
The zeolite absorbs the nitrogen in the air which is drawn in from atmospheric air, and the output from the sieve beds I'd just pure oxygen. Silica gel is used to remove moisture. It is different so I wouldn't think you can use silica gel.
@glasslinger
@glasslinger 3 года назад
The amount of silica gel required would be huge! It absorbs water slowly so to handle the flow of the machine you would need cubic feet of it! Then you would have to have means to dry out the silica gel regularly. The radiator method is much more suitable.

Please sir, how is the air coming out of the compressor cooled to produce cold oxygen for us. What do we use? I would like the name of the device please and the names of all the materials used in the oxygen concentrator. Thank you in advance for your efforts.
@sootikins

Is your collection block and pressure gage rated for oxygen service? People trying to copy this system need to understand that concentrated O2 requires special fittings, piping and manifolds (etc) and everything must be perfectly free of oil, solvents, etc. ("oxygen clean"). Concentrated O2 can and will cause spontaneous combustion of incorrectly spec'd, designed and cleaned piping systems! It is far more dangerous than you'd think.

The oxygen here is never above 2 Bar, what you wrote applies to oxygen under high pressure.
@sootikins
@sootikins 3 года назад
@@daliborfarny Thanks for explaining. I would still advise people to be careful to keep things clean. In my youth I succeeded in making grease ignite spontaneously by sticking the tip of an unlit oxy-acetylene torch into it and turning on the oxygen valve. I'll admit I had to really work at it to make it happen though.

This is not something general medical staff will be able to manage. This machine once setup in a production environment should be isolated and be operated by a single knowledgeable individual.

Be careful to position the air entry where it cannot pick up vehicle exhaust, or otherwise you might be concentrating some carbon monoxide with the oxygen. This has happened to divers compressing air for their cylinders with fatal outcomes.

@KallePihlajasaari

I think he said is was salvaged from the O2 concentrators that were the source of the sieve beds. It is just a simple valve used to quickly pressurise the fresh bed before pushing compressed air in. He said they removed the flow restrictors from the O2 output lines so the valve may not even be needed but using the restrictions and the valve improves the efficiency/concentration somewhat.

Great idea on the concentrator but I think you are using the wrong sieve material. I have no problem with moisture at all with my machines and the humidity here is AWFUL in summer. The 13X sieve is drastically cheaper than the lithium stuff and seems to not be bothered by moisture.
