I run a holiday villa, white linen and white towels are the bane of my life, blood, make up, sun cream and fake tan destroy everything!! Prepare for buying new every season!!!! Do not spend a fortune, it's not worth it!!
After trudging through a dozen episodes of Hotel Inspector, it's an inspiration to see a smart couple execute their dream well. Even better to check the reviews and see that they've maintained that standard for many years - perfect, consistent 5-star reviews. Extremely impressive.
Beautiful, however i would put a little privacy screen made from wood in between the two balconies, just for a bit more privacy, dont neccesarily want to greet the other guests on the other balcony in the morning in my night gown.
I find the grey a bit dark. Would have chosen a lighter shade. Probably would have chosen more of a sandy shade to be honest, to make it look warmer & more welcoming but then I'm probably just being boring.
Lovely place! I'd be happy to stay there. ~I *really* love the all WHITE bedding... I'm always a bit suspicious of dark or too patterned linens. White = CLEAN! (for me, anyway) Also loathe 'decorative' bed cushions - unless it's in my own home (I think they end up on the floor & don't get cleaned)
I’d rather have a full frontal lobotomy than running a guest house or a hotel. I loaathe entertaining guests and having to accommodate paying guests would be my ultimate nightmare.
While they have made a nice job of the inside, even though I don't particularly like some of their tastes in decor. However I absolutely hate that dull grey colour they painted the outside. It just doesn't match the surroundings at all. A lighter colour like sand stone colour or something like that that would be far more inviting and warm feeling. If I saw that advertised and saw photos of the outside of that building I would not book it.
I totally agree about the outside colour. Dreary is the word I would choose. I am so surprised they got away with it - not only does it not match but it brings down the entire tone of the surroundings. I was surprised there were no comments in the actual film about it
30 mins wait for breakfast, you gotta be kidding! Sausages and the like should be partly cooked and left in a warm oven, then only fry the egg with the rest when ordered. 10 minutes is enough
I think child free is a great idea. There are plenty of people without children, or people who have grown up children, or single people, who don't want to stay somewhere with other people's "little darlings". There are plenty of family friendly places to stay, so I like the fact they identified their market. However I don't understand how an interior designer, doesn't think there is a budget?
Because they don't spend their own, only someone else's? I thought she was a Set designer for theatres, not an interior one? Not watched it for ages, but I was looking for Brixham and I had forgotten about this. So I may be wrong.
She is not an interior designer, she enjoys shopping. These rooms do not even have anything on the walls. She just copied a few images from magazines. They look unfinished.
When will people learn that their "budget" has almost nothing to do with what a huge renovation will actually cost?? They need to learn how to project a realistic budget.
The place is lovely but lacks in terms of colour, i think the outside would have looked charming in an off white and as for the inside too much gray and quite sparse. Needs perhaps a wall gallery of art work and some large indoor plants in the dining area.
I do admire their spirit, I would be petrified of doing such a thing. The accommodation is lovely. I wouldn't have chosen the grey for the outside, I found it an odd choice.
9:30 ... the WOMAN carries 15 lbs of grocery to the house every week - from the local grocers. .. but the same WOMAN - can't carry a ... 5lb ... rubbish bin to the street !?
Maybe she shops and he takes out the rubbish is their division of labour. What's your problem? Also, women just don't like touching rubbish or anything dirty or smelly or slimy. So they'd prefer the man takes out the rubbish and men seem to prefer taking out rubbish to shopping, as a rule. Shopping for food is usually done in the morning or at least daylight hours; taking out the rubbish is often done at night or after dark, when there could be rats or other 'dangers' in the rubbish area. Again, a reason a woman would rather the man did that job. The weight of the rubbish has nothing to do with it - personal preference does. Your comment says more about you - and your anger at women - than about this couple.
@@FigaroHey " equality pay ... equality for all" ( what a man does - a woman can to as well ). NOBODY likes touching rubbish - why should the MEN get all of the slimy smelly jobs !? ... I thought women are just as able to do dirty slimy jobs the same as a MAN .
@@FigaroHey hey ... if you don't think a woman can should the same jobs as a man .. why are we (society) paying them the same ? ... if ( a woman ) is only able to do 1/3 the work a man does ( man carries 15 lbs in - while the woamn carries 5 lbs out ) ... shouldn't the pay be to the woman be cut by 2/3 rds ?? ... ( $15 an hour for carrying 15 lbs of food - but if you are only able to carry 5 lbs of food - why should the woman get $15 / hour for doing 2/3 rds the works a man did in the same hour / )
That storm porch belongs in a small modern housing estate. I’d love to see something more statement - bigger canopy, maybe made of driftwood. Glad they’ve done so well though.
Gotta say the tiny TV on the wall is a miss, (it would be funny, if it were not soooo sad.) They could add binoculars to each of the window sills, so the guests can get the most out of the fab view.
WOW, the outside is just gorgeous. Simple, and CLEAN. The breakfast room is nice too. Only thing I would do differently is just put a SMIDGE more color. Just a couple of bouquets of flowers maybe? Just an opinion.
I love it, but not a single piece of driftwood in any room? There's beautiful and upscale driftwood art, or bowls or just a very clean piece on a table would be nice.
I agree that the outside colour is drab. I hope they don’t continue to put ketchup and mustard on the breakfast table in their plastic bottles. If they want 5 stars condiments need to go into small china containers.
Yes, I was shock to see the ketchup bottle on the table.. Also agree a small vase of fresh flowers needed on table which would create a cheerful morning atmosphere.
The grey is beautiful. It's modern and signals that they've gone in a more tasteful direction than "keeping with the area." The whole point of their reno is to go upscale, which the gray is.
Yeah, there's nothing like ashes or charcoal or rain clouds among the colors of nature. White with black, perhaps, might have married the contemporary with the classic (suggesting half-timbered buildings). Though I don't mind dark grey or even black buildings.
@@fireflyrocks1 They are not going for a 'holiday home' vibe. They are going for upscale boutique hotel and adults-only clientele. They are signalling that with the color.
I totally love the grey. Beautiful color in keeping with the modern vibe. It signals to anyone approaching that they're in for something modern and tasteful.
WHY start a project if the 1st question is; "WHAT WILL IT DO TO US ?" !!!!!!!!! If you don't know your partner/wife well enough to even TRUST them to STAND TOGETHER as ONE and think that there may be the slightest chance they just pack-up (or YOU) pack up and turn your back on the project THEN WHY EVEN CONTEMPLATE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE ???? DORKS.
The exterior could be a tad lighter - interiors are nicely done, nice detail. If they want to exclude children, that's their choice. It's a different vibe with kids on premises. Not such a big deal going $50k over budget, but a shame they missed the summer season. Hire a breakfast cook!
In 2023 I had friends who spent over 24K on the kitchen. He said it was going to be white, black and pale grey. I groaned but when it was finished it was fabulous. Helped by the fact that one wall was 4 huge sliding doors.
Not to be redundant but hate the exterior color (or lack of color). But very impressed with their vision and the teamwork. So much work involved and they did a really good job. I would love to stay in this place.
Yeah. Even if I was booking to stay alone, I would not want a bathtub in my bedroom. I have the feeling in 10-15 years all these shows will have people remodeling hotels and houses to do away with bathtubs in bedrooms, with hosts suppressing shudders and sarcasm about what people were THINKING in those days... Especially with carpets or wood floors, the water... no. No.
@@FigaroHey I couldn't agree more, I am a woman and frequently travel with my sister or a female friend and we share a room but I really don't want to have a bath in front of them. Why not put a toilet in the bedroom?? Not to mention, as you say, wood floors , carpet water...........
He can gauge their style and taste by what looking around and seeing what direction they are going in.... Do you know you can tell alot about a person just by their shoes?
The location is not ideal. Brixham is out of nowhere and there isn't much to do or see and no public transportation. If you are at the centre of town, it is a long walk to and from the B&B.
Very Odd: With thank's to the artists residence. Narrated by Alek Pollizi. Loved the end result. Very stylish but welcoming. The Artists Residence was one of Alex's Projects some time ago. I wonder what the connection is. I have subscribed because I enjoyed it very much.
I had to laugh when I heard of the initial timeline and budget. Has they not watched any of the Hotel Inspector episodes? I’m glad they pulled it together and are still together and successful!
8:42 ... WOMAN - I want to come up with ALL of the possibilities. ... MAN - I am ONLY interested in the ideas that - the budget allows - & - the local building codes will allow us to build. ... WOMAN - " I never checked on any of that stuff - I just wanted it to look pretty - I have already spent 1/2 our budget - & - NOW you are telling me we can't use any of it !?" - - - Plans for a 6 foot SOLID GRANITE statue that pees champange - in the front entrance way - should not even be on the list of possibilities - it is out of our budget & the local building codes won't allow us to build it - WHY did you spend time & money on THESE IDEAS - if you know from the start - the local building codes won't allow us to build any of it !? ...
it all turned out beautifully . However lining up all the duces ( tables ) in the breakfast room like that is a turn off . as it offers zero privacy from the couples next to you . They should be augmented
All in all, having read everything from start to finish I reckon, as a package including owners and family, I would give Driftwood 5 points. Pity really as he was a decent chap.
37:21 - Well, that's a Bit Embarrassing for a B&B hotelier, to be acting that way with guests! Here in July 2023 - I'll be surprised if this couple are still together . . . . . . theres a very odd lack of affection, between them all the time ! - and tension in their rare closeness !
She wanted an open fireplace, and he chose to have a woodburning stove. Having had both, I agree with the stove... It burns hotter and more economic, plus it doesn't give off as much dust as an open fireplace does....
Why do Asian people eat rice with meat for breakfast? Why do Americans put maple syrup on their bacon for breakfast? Why do Scots put salt on their porridge? All of these could be considered as just as weird.
As coming from abroad, with a partner originally from Devon, i love the grey, but hate the wallpaper! Otherwise lovely people, lovely view, gorgeous beach.
Hate the wallpaper, hate the dark grey outside building colour , dinning area & outdoor very nice , bright ,modern.. but....rooms & front entrance hallway bland, boring decor ... doesn't have the WOW factor when you first enter ..pity they seem nice people
@@womanonabicycle Thanks a lot for the response, but I am particularly looking for any more episodes in this series " Our Dream Hotel " which is deferent from Hotel Inspector series that I've already seen most of it. I do appreciate your help.
There is a lovely one about a sweet Scottish couple who convert a cave into a B and B in Andalucia. It knocks spots off this place, not because of the location, Brixham is great, but because they got it right decor wise. And they have genuine warmth, are obviously deeply in love and are realistic. They got hit by red tape, but they won through and the place is stunning. Not like a crypt, even though it is a cave! Lol
Definitely no warmth from the woman, l could count on one hand the times she smiled & dreadfully pretentious, walks into a shop "oooo it smells expensive" who says or thinks that? So many similar instances. Not hospitality material.
We are only getting to know each other . After 3 years 😮 .. plus is this a show about a hotels or relationships ? How many times did we here the couple never lived together 👎👎👎👎👎👎
Madness!….40k a year income…..that’ll take them 16 years just to break even assuming they don’t spend a penny for 16 years!!….thats £150k a room, bargain.
Omg from the outside a real blot on the landscape. The woman has no warmth or likability. Prestentious! He is far more amenable. However, after he has taken a risk I hope it's a success. All that (fake) snobbery I couldn't bear. Only toffs can carry it off.
9:30 ... AMERICANS don't put up with CRAp like this !!! ... " If I need the rubbish taken out - I need to ask a MAN to do it for me" ... Your arms work just as well as his ... WHY CAN"T YOU TAKE OUT THE RUBBISH .. instead of thinking that you are too high & mighty to "lower yourself" to take out your own USED TAMPONS to the street rubish bin. - I need a MAN to do this for me . ... !?
