The team here at Slant 3D has been working hard throughout the year to reach our goal of bringing high-quality $10 filament to the market. And now, we are ready to share our roadmap of exactly how we plan to get there. In this video, we will go over the major checkpoints we plan to hit and explain how they will help us bring the cost down.

Regarding the black color, please consider a matte black rather then shiny. Matte seems to be more popular recently, mostly because it hides print errors better. In regards to the spool, please mention the empty weight of it on the spool itself. That way it's easy to calculate remaining filament.

Why not correct your English, so you can seem intelligent? Why, you can't figure out the difference between "then" and "than"? Try typing them into the search engine to find out what these words mean. Seriously, why make a comment that shows the entire word how much of an idiot you are. I would be all for $10-$15 rolls of filament! I will be watching for this for sure. One thought I had regarding plastic spool waste; I hate having big plastic spools left over from filament rolls. An idea I thought would be great is to sell the rolls wrapped on only a cardboard tube. Similar to the cardboard centerpiece on a roll of tape. Then have 2 plastic side pieces that can be removed but are not included by default with the spool. Then you could sell the plastic side pieces separately or even let people print them themselves. That way when you get a new spool you just pop the 2 plastic sides on and it would be exactly like a normal spool. When it's out, pop off the sides to save for another spool and toss the cardboard core. You seem to be uniquely positioned to offer something like this since you have the print farm to print the side parts in-house. It could also help drive down cost. A cardboard tube has to be cheaper than those spools plus it would weigh slightly less for shipping

Pretty cool plan. Something I would love to see despite it not being feasible would be recycled ABS filament. Most electronics use ABS plastic, and it is a hard plastic to get recycled. For the longest time I have been wishing to find a way to shred the plastic and make it something useful. The hard part is people want things to be a single color. I think a recycled ABS filament containing a random variety of colors would be cool.

I used to work in a plastics manufacturing plant. Here are a tip that will help out on the manufacturing aspect of the filament. Tip 1: when doing a color change make sure everything is clean. Clean out your screens. Run your new color. Shut the machine down. Clean screens. again. Then run the machine. Monitor your temperatures very closely. A couple of degrees of temp can change the color and thickness of the end product. That will throw your QA/QC outa spec.

The problem with 3D printing spools is the cost, in most cases you are cheaper just to buy filament with a spool rather than a refill than to print the spool yourself, and that doesn’t take into account time either.
@jblack3761
@jblack3761 10 месяцев назад
@@conorstewart2214 I don't know about that. The SlantSpool can be printed for about 300grams of filament (even less at 250g for the 6 inch version), so you can get about 3 spools per kg of filament. I've been using the PrintedSolid Jessie PLA transition rolls for my SlantSpools, which costs $16/kg, or about $5 per printed spool. If removing the spool from a roll of filament saves even $1 per roll, you'll make up the difference in just 5 rolls, plus you don't have to deal with the empty spools (if you consider that a negative at all). I buy a lot of ABS filament and my manufacturer of choice is Keene Village Plastics. Their Koil line (without the spool) costs a few dollars less than the normal spooled stuff, so I make up the cost in just a couple rolls.

I really think a good consumer level recycler would be great. Id love to customize my own filament and reuse all my supports and failed prints. I dont like the idea of cranking way more plastic into the environment for cheaper

Yes if you guys could have local stations where we can give in pla scraps in return for say, 75% of the weight in recycled filament, that would be awesome.

Where's the 10$ filament? All I see is 58$ for 3 rolls. 19.33 per roll. Is this some sort of scam?

As someone that only makes functional prints, I usually buy the cheapest pla or tpu I can find for a reasonable quality. A spool lasts me a year or so since I don't print that often. A $10 spool sounds magic.

What a great project. I am looking forward to seeing it progress in the next couple of years. I shared this video with my friend. He is. a process engineer at an aerospace 3D printing company in CDA. This would also be a great option for technical schools that teach part design and 3D printing since they work on a small budget.

Looking forward to this! The high price of PET-G compared to PLA has been really getting on my nerves knowing that it's only industry inefficiency/incompetence that keeps it so expensive. And I'm sure that the most efficient production lines currently in existence are making overly massive margins due to lack of competition 😶

Great dedication and transparency from Slant 3D on an industry leading plan. As part of defining better standards related to material consistency, spool optimization, etc., I hope Slant 3D is able to also influence how filament specifications are documented and communicated. Currently many unknowns, inconsistencies exist, unlike materials sourced by woodworking, or metal industries. Being open with the print community/industry and being able to share feedback, or lessons learnt will create a disruption with positive consequences.

May I suggest having a feedback page that you can quickly access with a QR code with the batch number auto filled. This feedback page could have all parameters you are looking for with feedback like consistency, color, jamming, packaging (unsealed bag), printer used, etc. I’m sure people will use it to help you get the most feedback ASAP to help iron out bugs on the production line.

I would recommend a fiber laser as the marking time is low and has a high level of success on plastic. Also 5 or 10 kg spools would be a nice for massive prints.

Actually, as a trucker, distribution out of Denver is about as optimal as you can be for shipping within CONUS. Texas has more flat to the east, but there's still more range when servicing the NE. As for Cali and the PNW, both allows you to service as needed.

If you haven't picked a spot in Texas yet, I highly recommend the Humle, TX area. Intercontinental Airport Houston has a shipping area off FM 1960 and Will Clayton where all the major shipping companies are located: UPS, FedEx, DHL, and even USPS. They're right off the IAH dedicated runway for shipping services. Reasonable cost of living and real estate. If shipping is your #1 concern, you can't beat it.

One thing to consider at some point along this voyage, reusable spools. If you can find a way to make spools that can separate into two identical stackable parts that can be returned to you in large batches for credit on future purchases. You might be able to reduce cost a bit more.

yeah now a lot of people are printing with bambu lab x1c/p1p as well. They come with reusable spools for the AMS and you can get filament without spools that slides right on

Highest of high hopes for this project. I'm a hobbyist, so most of my projects are PLA (sometimes PETG). For $10 a roll (of 1kg) would be amazing. I find it for between $12 and $17 usually. Rarely I'll go above $20 but that's usually for something my family wants (glow in the dark, mate, specific silk, or a color no one else has). I'd LOVE a 2kg spool for $20. Shipping might be the killer though. Best of luck guys, I really REALLY hope you all find a successful path to this affordible filament.

Fun thought, a simple tool for transferring between large and small spools and 10-50kg bulk spools, should save in packaging, shipping, and labor swapping spools on the machine, and even at fairly low volume could increase batch size significantly.

When Noyce in Fairchild suggested to continue going lower in price for their semiconductors, many declared him crazy. The result was they greatly expanded the market for semiconductors since they became affordable for all. Fighting for price won't make many investors warm but when done right, it can be very successful. (Eg. Ikea) Hats off to you!
@jfnotk255
@jfnotk255 7 месяцев назад
Uh, IKEA. I know their products for decades now. That business may be a success for them, but not so much for the customers. If you know their products over decades, especially until they are broken, you would have seen how they can keep the low prices. So here hopefully a bad comparison 🙃
