This travel vlog from St Ives on our Rabbies tour continues on from a video we started in Cornwall earlier in the day and deserves it's own. St Ives and Cornish pasties are on the menu today and we're excited to share both with you, as controversial as our opinions might be :P
Cornwall is home to the Cornish Pasty, another British food we were told we had to hunt out and try. Trying them in St Ives seemed like the perfect place! We couldn't find a nice spot down by the beach so instead found a bakery with great reviews, and apparently awards, to taste.
Cornwall might be one of our favourite places in England, but the pasty probably won't be on our ordering list again. It's not as much about the pasties as it was about our personal taste - not really the sort of combination of flavours that tick the boxes for us!
Rabbies is an award winning small tours company that operate in the UK - 16 seater buses, driver and guide and a load of epic locations to visit. While this is a paid partnership all opinions are our own, as always. We hand pick our partnerships to ensure we keep things real and honest throughout - we genuinely loved our tour and recommend you check out all the tours Rabbies offers here - bit.ly/2OCzRJQ

OK the Cornish Pasty was made by the Tin Miners Girlfriends/ Mothers or Wives. As you said they contained Potato, Swede, Onion and Beef (Skirt). Salt and Pepper with a little flour sprinkle on and knobs of Butter on top of it all. The crimp was probably 3 times as big as on the one you tried but the Pasty was probably at least twice the size of the one you tried. Being a Tin Mine the Ore contained Arsenic. Which was why they held onto the crimp and ate only the middle to stop them getting Arsenic Poisoning. They discarded the crimp. At one time it was rumoured that they discarded the crimp to feed the Knockers (Tin Mine Fairies). As the Tin Mines closed the Miners looked overseas for jobs. On the way over the crimp was reduced and stayed smaller as the found themselves working in Coal Mines removing the need for the huge crimps. These days there are strict EU legislations including what goes into them and how they are assembled. And like Champaign they must be made in Cornwall. To be able to be called a Cornish Pasty.

The pasty shape is because of the tin miners. They have that edge because tin miners had poison on their hands and dirt so they would hold the crust and eat the rest and through away the edge. Some say beef for the pasty and apparently some say lamb. The Bedfordshire clanger is similar but savoury one end and sweet at the other.
@tehminagoskar2043
@tehminagoskar2043 3 года назад
It makes a great story but that is a myth. Pasties were and are eaten from one end to the other (otherwise it would all fall out). There are some wonderful photographs of miners and other workers eating pasties, none show them eating from the middle down to the crimp. PS. Some may not appreciate calling Cornish pasties English food...

Tin / silver can occur in combination with Arsenic and this was what you did not want on your fingers when eating your pastie.

@@DanegerAndStacey The best place in Cornwall to go for Pasties is Padstow. It has many pasty shops in the town, my personal favourite is The Padstow Pasty Co, theirs are really good. The Chough Bakery's pasties are pretty good too but because it's award winning and the first one you get to it's always really crowded. The pasty that you were served was indeed very shoddy as this person pointed out. Not only were they stingy on the meat but on filling as a whole, a proper pasty is packed full. I hope you're not put off and someday you'll get to try a better one.

Pasties can be very hit and miss,but the one place we have found to have the best isn't in a shop.If you visit a place called Coverack on The Lizard,there is a lady called Elizabeth who sells pasties and cakes from her thatched cottage.I think she only opens during the week,but these really are fantastic pasties,made in the traditional way.

The miners used to also have there wives make larger round pasties that were one half savoury and one half sweet. For taste I would much rather have a pie than a Cornish pasty but that is a whole new line of story telling that you need to visit Lancashire and Yorkshire for. Simulate to Devon and Cornwall for there history of disagreements. You would love the amount of story's behind the war of the roses

It was both main course and dessert in one. Because conditions were so dirty down the pit the only way to keep the food untainted was to cover it in a thick pastry. The miner could then break it in half and hold the pastry with his filthy coal dust covered hands and eat the filling out of the shell.

Oggy is the Cornish word for pasty... So glad you had such an amazing time in our Eden on Earth (as us Cornish Call it). Kernow bys vyken! :D P.S presuming you were also told that the last bite of their pasty would be left as an offering for the knockers, the piskies that lived down the mines? Without our miners taking their myths and superstitions with them when they went to America to mine, we wouldn't have the film "The Tommy Knockers!" 😃😃 And have to say that is not the best place to get a pasty! I make Cornish pasties at home here in the U.S., and they look much better than what you had. I didn't see any beef in yours, and the onion should NOT be the prominent taste. The swede definitely gives the pasty its distinctive savory flavor, but should compliment the beef and potato. The onion, salt, and pepper should be more for accent and seasoning. It should taste like a delicious beef stew in a sturdy pastry crust. One of my favorite all time foods...

That doesn't make Cornwall a country though.There are other counties in England that have distinct differences from one another, too. For example, Yorkshire, which has a very strong sense of regional pride. You won't find a person who is more proud of their history, culture, etc, than a Yorkshireman. Us Yorkshire folk often identify more with our county than the country as a whole, but that doesn't mean we're not English or British. Cornish have minority status, but they don't have their own country and our part of England.

To be fair, Cornish Pasties are exactly what they are, meat & potato wrapped in pastry, there's really nothing special going on, despite what the locals think. This is an area where some people think they're somehow different from the rest of England, having a "different" way of spreading cream and jam on a scone isn't a "thing" and it really doesn't make you different, lol. It's a bit odd.

The Cornish pasty has a long history as a workman's food, but it's wildly overrated nowadays. I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole.

There should be at least 12 1/2% meat in a Cornish pastie according to The Cornish Pastie Association. It doesn't sound much but I reckon you were robbed.

Interesting, we sort of found the same. Maybe the more flavoured, but less traditional, options would have been a bit nicer
@paulacnote

@@DanegerAndStacey problem with that is traditionally it's just beef,onion,Swede and potato and kinda bland. Is it not Cornish pasties that were also sweet on one half and savoury on the other? Or is that an incorrect knowledge bomb?
@lokki245

paulaclagueelliott there's an old traditional pastry which was common in East Anglia and some neighbouring counties. It has a few variations in different counties (in both fillings and pastry types) but the one I was first introduced to was called a Clanger, or Bedfordshire Clanger. It has very similar origins to a pasty, although, it was for farm workers rather than miners so didn't need the heavy, disposable, crimped pastry edging. It did, however, have a savoury end and a sweet end. I think the two descriptions get confused sometimes (even by some Cornish people). ...and I also find most Cornish Pasties are quite bland. :-)

"Voted the Worlds Best Pasty" ??? Yes, maybe by the bakers wife but certainly not anyone else. It looked like a vegetarian pasty with no meat at all. Cornish businesses in St Ives should give better value for money and not treat tourists like idiots.
