Not big into gas signs but like displaying old parts. Hand painted drag strip sign, Alexander intake, and a 36 dodge dash out of my dad’s old hotrod are my favs.

I was (and still am, I guess) a collector of automobilia. I had a 30'x40' shop loaded with signs, cans, gas pumps & automotive advertising, I had picked up over a 40+ year span. Most of it, was either given to me or cost very little. For several years, a friend of mine who sells at the Fall Hershey meet, had been after me to sell it. One day, as I entered my shop to work on a then current project, I happened to look at the stuff on the wall, floor & hanging from the ceiling, and thought how, it was the first time in a long time, I had actually looked at it. I realized that the RERAL fun had been the experieces in collecting it. I called my friend and he came over with two trucks and a trailer and I got a little over $8k for mthe stuff !

You talk about grills. Some 50 or so years ago I regularly went to a big flea market miles from where I lived. This is when I owned a 36 Buick 4 door sedan. There was this guy selling a perfect complete 36' Buick grill for I think $25 or something. As mine was in good shape I didn't think to buy it. After gettin home and thinking about it I wished I had. Well for the longest time, a year or so I'm thinking much longer and me still going that flea market that guy had come back and he still had that grill. As you can guess I couldn't get my money out of my wallet fast enough. Wish I still had that old Buick. I'm now driving a 40' ford with a stock 37' flathead.

Another great "Shooting the Sh!t!" For me, like you guys, it's the sentimental attachment and story behind the stuff that follows us home! I have a lot of treasures/junk on my walls and ceiling, but the two that always make me smile are the ITG Ardun poster (framed) that hangs over my work bench for inspiration, and the Bennetts Customs Midnight Special mini banner that they surprised me with! Oh, and your cast off nerf bar from the Sweetheart Roadster that is now on my '46! Everything in my garage and on the walls and shelves has a story, and a connection to the hobby and the great, interesting people that keep this nonsense fueled and going! You said it best, we are just care takers for the next generation! Go Iron Trap, thank you, and keep moving forward!

I have about 40 signs in my shop but they are all small reproduction of varying quality. I prefer repro since I use my shop and don't want to ruin a real sign with paint overspray or other things. I don't have a story of any particular piece, but I went to an auction of a car museum being closed. The auction was automobilia one day, cars the next. I did my research before I went to get realistic values for the items I was interested in. There was one Gilmore gas sign in mediocre condition that was listed as a repro that I found online for $100. Someone paid $800+ comission for it that day. Automobilia collectors are nuts, IMO.

Funny thing about the gas tank side: I also have one hanging on my wall from the SEMA show. Mike Wagner from Cornfield Customs shaped it on the MH19 power hammer, giving a demonstration to a group of guys, including me and Ron Covell. Mike let Ron run the hammer and Apparently that was his first time on a power hammer. When it was done, Mike asked who wanted it and nobody else spoke up so I got to take it home! Getting it through airport security was a little tricky but it made it home to be put on the wall!

We learn and pass on heritage through stories. For me, listening to the back stories of some of the things you have discovered and now have displayed was fantastic. This podcast was so enjoyable from start to finish. In fact, I think I will end up watching it again ... just to pick up anything I may have missed. Like you guys, I have similar items in my garage that have specific meaning to me. All the best from Australia.

Interesting stuff. I love the stories as well. My 2 favorite signs are a racecar releated purchased at auction and another family heirloom. The race item is a signs that reads Panoz and was one of the signs that that was above the team's garage at Le Mans purchased at a Johnny O'Connel charity auction before Petit Le Mans. Le Mans labels each team's garage with a rather large sign and this one of them. Panoz's factory was in Georgia. Johny O lived in Georgia and the first Road Atlanta professional race I attended was Panoz's first at Road Atlanta. The other is a Coca Cola sign with chalk board. It used to read "Go Faster!" which was from use as a pit board during a Southern Tech Bath Tub race. I can see one of Dad's frat brothers writing this while another brother drove the car. The back story is from the 60s to 92, students made basically lawn mower to motorcycle powered go carts with a footed bath tub to seat the driver. Google will turn up youtube videos. When motorcycles started getting faster rules started changing. So at Iron Trap you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a stromberg? We only get deformed dried out squirrels down in Georgia

I have been fortunate enough to grab some interesting signs . Not all have some Awesome stories. But my favorite one is a 3 piece sign that is hand painted on wood. It's 4 fts by 16 ft long. It says THE DYNO SHOP. It's faded but in great condition. I found it in a dumpster that was being rehabed . It takes up alot of space. But makes me smile every time I see it.

As A person that lives in California bay area I've been collecting old things for many year's. I have gave away A lot of old thing's to friend's that I know that would appreciate it as much as I do plus there are many people that have gave me thing's to add to my collections. I hang thing's up or display it to see that might be the reason people add to my collection. Then again some time's thing's have to go because it becomes to much over time looking like a horder over time the stuff starts to stack up.

Got flashbacks when I saw the mummified cat. I found one under a house on Maria Island off the east coast of Tasmania, during a school trip in the 80s. I snuck it home and hid it, but not well enough. My father found it and (disgusted by it) threw it out.

Matt how about you continue making car content and working on that and ask your dad to do the projects like the mezzanine and stay out of it. He built how many things while you were growing up? He can do it fine, you just have to let go and accept the results. It may not be your way but it will be done and built to last. From someone else's dad to someone else's son.
