I really enjoy your teaching style. I was able to follow along and gain a comprehensive understanding without feeling overwhelmed with formulas and jargon. As a newbie, I really appreciate that. Thank you Pi :)

I'm just wondering how do the domes you recommended compare to the stock diffuser dome that comes with our flashes?
@sklba632

My favorite version of the dome modifier is a 1 quart Kool Aid container.

that flashdisc works really quite nice. the only thing i dont like so much, is not its fault. when i do party pics, my flash is pointing up with this. I often tend to go minus 0.7 with my flash anyway, and because my flash ttl automatically gives more power thinking im gonna bounce, i need to correct a little more for it. in opposite to many mini softboxes, its completely filled with light except that little reflective patch, also it doesnt fall of and does not shade the af-illuminator. Nice for product photography. even for macro, because if you tilt your flashhead down (gotta pull it out a little) it covers the area in front of your lens where the bugs are

Okay I judged this course too soon. First video I was confused by the insistence that manual was always best.....I guess it's a useful stance to take when instructing beginners with basic on camera flash without introducing moving subjects quite yet....(where TTL would be very useful). Really starting to get into these tutorials now and great to refresh my old knowledge of lighting. Can't wait to get to off camera lighting to perfect and hone my rusty skills. This is tutorial is quite thorough. Very useful for getting back to basics. Thanks.

Ringflash is nice if you are quite close, but its not terribly soft. ringflash-softboxes are soft , they are big and intimidating and you will only see through your cam anymore. they work nice down to about 14mm on apsc, you sometimes got to push em a bit and they dont sit terribly tight on the cam. a ringflash adapter like here works with any focal length and fits tighter, but isnt foldable and doesnt fit into pockets as nice. also the ring from the softbox is bigger, nicer in the eyes. They both dont create perfect rings

Question: Do you recommend the Gary Fong Lightsphere or the Magsphere? I'd like to use it for weddings, night portraits, receptions, and events. Let me know what you think!
@sceamson
@sceamson 6 лет назад
@8.45 there comes a set of the central discs containing, silver mirror reflector (which is used in this scene) and diffusers which passes light through it (white and orange). Now interestingly, while diffusers need to be placed such that "convex" side is visible from front (think of micro umbrella), but Silver reflector disk, must be placed to show "concave" side visible (UNLIKE as seen in this video)

Can you do a comparison between the Fong Dong and the Magmod lightsphere? I'm personally biased against Gary Fong for putting out a heavily biased, unfair comparison between his Fong Dong and the MagMod system, so it'd be nice to see an unpartial comparison betweeen the two products from SLR lounge. Good video overall!
@payamjirsa
@payamjirsa 8 лет назад
+The Cleverly Named Person They are both great, just different. the Magmod lightsphere pushes light in a sphere pretty equally, the Fong Dong pushes some light into a sphere, but when uncapped, the majority of light still goes in the direction the flash is pointed. This makes the Fong Dong a little better when you need a subtle amount of fill, and a directional light to bounce with.

Hey Monette, This is actually a snippet from our best-selling course 'Lighting 101': www.slrloungeworkshops.com/lighting-101 In the full course we show images using these modifiers and demonstrate how to use them.

Why do they do grids for speedlights come in fraction of inches, and grids for moonlight reflectors come in degrees?

I'm surprised that the Rogue Flashbender isn't listed. Methinks it's the perfect balance of versatility and portability.

I was watching the DVD thing and in Color Temperature, you are talking about "Degrees Kelvin" and Metric System... well Kelvin are NOT degrees, you don't say Degrees Kelvin, but 4500 Kelvin, just like that... and they have NOTHING to do with metric or imperial systems, thanks

Why such a personal dig at a guy who is doing a free video to educate? Something he does very well by the way, and I'd be more than happy to sit with a coffee or ten with him to pick his brain. The man is an idiot Pye who obviously hasn't grown up yet.
