Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2003!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

2003 is one of my favorite year for albums top 5 deep cuts: 1. Heartbeats - The Knife (this is a top 5 song ever) 2. A Wolf at the Door - Radiohead (There There could be here but this doesn't get talked about as much and it blew my mind after hearing it a couple of times. Thom Yorke raps!) 3. Salvador Sanchez - Sun Kil Moon (i don't know how to describe this) 4. Les Os - The Unicorns (the most fun song on one of the most fun albums) 5. II. Solar System - Mount Eerie (this is one of Phil's most solid song-writing, he doesn't do a lot of stand alone songs but when he does it it's often great. Honorable mention: Kissing the lipless by the Shins, this was number 1 last year but I've kind of worn it out

You crazy for this one, Rick. 1. 99 Problems - Jay-Z. A modern Schoolhouse Rock song that teaches everyone about illegal police searches. 2. Out of Time - Blur. Awesome tune from Blur's best album. Yeah, I said it. 3. Sweet Marie - Crooked Fingers. Great song from the year's best album. 4. Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. An all-time indie rock classic with some awesome guitar loops. 5. Teenage Wristband - The Twilight Singers. An overlooked gem from Greg Dulli's post-Afghan Whigs band. 6. Good Woman - Cat Power. Beautiful tune from Chan Marshall featuring Warren Ellis on violin and Eddie Vedder on backing vocals. 7. So Says I - The Shins. Great 60s influenced rocker from the Shins. 8. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes. The best guitar riff you think is a bass riff. It's since become the "We Will Rock You" of it's generation. 9. House of Jealous Lovers - The Rapture. Classic dance-punk track produced by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. 10. Hey Ya - Outkast. You've heard it a million times, but it's still great and demands to be shaken like a Polaroid picture.

"Sweet Marie" feels like it owes a lot to "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves. In a couple spots the melody and chord progression are almost exactly the same. Just an observation.

BILLBOARD 1. WINNER: *Hey Ya! by OutKast #1* (An effervescent pop soul banger that the public was right about. The grooves on the chorus are immaculate.) 2. *Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes #76* (Easily one of the most iconic rock riffs of the 21st century. Reminds me of Cream.) 3. *Times Like These by Foo Fighters #65* (The acoustic version might have the edge, but still a solid all-around rock track.) 4. *Crazy in Love by Beyoncé #1* (One of the best monster R&B songs of this era.) 5. *Slow Jamz by Twista, Kanye West, and Jamie Foxx #1* (Cool neo-soul vibes on this collab.) WILDCARD 1. *Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie* (Beautiful and drawn out indie epic.) 2. *There, There by Radiohead* (The crunchy guitar and groovy bass make for such a delightful combination.) 3. *Far from Any Road by The Handsome Family* (Like many, True Detective introduced me to this track. It really is great alt-country though. Love the vocal tradeoff, and is that mandolin I hear?) 4. *Out of Time by Blur* (Great later period track for them going for more of an art rock approach.) 5. *Where I End and You Begin by Radiohead* (Once making a good song great with the right touches, this time the jazzy drumming and weird off-kilter backing.) Top 10 Wildcard HM: So Says I by The Shins Pretty (Ugly Before) by Elliott Smith La Ritournelle by Sébastien Tellier An interesting year for the chart picks. Three number one hits this late making it on here is quite the feat. Has to be the last time a winner will hold that distinction. A decent showing for R&B and some artier rock. Worst TOP 40: Have You Forgotten by Darryl Worley #22 (Jingoistic country about 9/11. What could go wrong?)

Hot 100: - Audioslave - Like a Stone - Beyonce feat. Jay-Z - Crazy In Love - OutKast - Hey Ya! - Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body - Dido - White Flag Wildcard: - Billy Talent - River Below - The Shins - Gone For Good - Cat Power - Good Woman - Joel Plaskett Emergency - Mystery and Crime Worst: Quite a few contenders especially from my usual targets like Uncle Kracker and Train but I think I am going with "Headstrong" by Trapt, just a terrible sounding garbage song. First: This will likely be this band's last appearance at the top spot but I am going with "2 + 2 =5" by Radiohead. Love this entire album beginning to end but this is a fantastic album opener and always gets me amped up for the album ahead.

@@NaughtyVampireGod Yeah. Ted Leo is known for inserting tons of fairly obscure musical references in his lyrics/titles. For instance, his debut album is called The Tyranny of Distance, based on a line from a Split Enz song (“Six Months in a Leaky Boat,” which Ted Leo covered on an EP; I prefer it over the original because the production is so much stronger).

2003 has some major highlights for me with songs, maybe not so much albums. Reptilia by The Strokes was a close contender for favorite song but i'd have to go with The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by The Postal Service off of my favorite album from '03. The song has this wonderful electronic alternative feel to it that usually wouldn't be my cup of tea, but the way they execute it really makes it and the entire group an outlier in this indie 2000's stuff. Its a very nostalgic song for me as well, something about the breakdown in the middle takes me back to when I was driving home at night with this cd in my parents car. Very much a pick from my heart, but one that really means a lot to me. Also you got my vote once again, Joe. I have a feeling i'm gonna pick your tracks throughout the whole decade, jason and kram by this point are definitely starting to tread beyond my wheelhouse haha

@@adamhasideas6813 In my rankings, Forster's The Evangelist is even higher than anything he did with the band. The issue with all the great Aussie bands is that they always appear at a time when the big selling markets in the world are just focused on some current hype (that is forgotten a year later, but we all know that quality is not a factor for success). Timing can be so essential - a lot of successful albums just came out at the right moment and we can in hindsight just shake our heads about "who the hell bought that?" I like Trouble and Maps a great deal, think Seven Nation Army is very solid, and I enjoyed your Blondie picks when I gave that album a first time listen this week. Pleasantly surprised with the quality of The Curse of Blondie. Alrighty then, 15 songs for me to check out. Totally unfamiliar with Fiery Furnaces, but I've liked songs by all the other artists I'll be giving a listen to. Talk to you later! :)

Hey NVG. I got your tunes listened to. Quite a bit of good stuff, with five songs separating themselves a bit from the pack. Really, really liked The Laws Have Changed. Almost on the same level (IMO) were Plan A and Saint Simon. I'd mentioned that Chutes Too Narrow wasn't my cup of tea, but many years later at least Saint Simon resonated. Down just a little further, I have Imaginary (great voice!) and My Bionic Eyes (great legs 😉). Glad to have encountered some really enjoyable new tunes! Take care.

@@brentjackson6839 Hey Brent - Thanks for checking out those songs and letting me know your takes. Really appreciate it. 😀 I've found the Shins to be very consistent over the course of their five studio albums.. . . That Liz Phair album (w the lucky guitar on the cover) was notorious for getting a 0.0 from Pitchfork. I'm a big fan of Liz and although it's not one her better albums the zero was truly absurd. (The review is - amazingly - still available online. . Didn't age well. Double standard is really over-the-top.) Her next album, Somebody's Miracle, is one my favorites from her. Maybe her best after the first two 90's classics. I think you will certainly enjoy a lot of upcoming picks from the New Pornographers . . SOTY contenders in 2005 and beyond. Glad you enjoy their sound. 🙂 Hope to get back to you with a report today or tomorrow. Till then, my friend, enjoy the weekend.

@@NaughtyVampireGod I love the first 3 Pornographers albums (I’d rank all of them among my top 25 indie pop records) and about 75% of Challengers. After that, I feel that they stopped putting out classic-level material, even though everything was at least decent in quality. Individually, the members have also put out some classics. Destroyer’s Rubies + Kaputt and A.C. Newman’s The Slow Wonder immediately come to mind.

Oh my goodness - 2003! What a great year, probably the best of the 2000s IMHO. So much so that I’ve really struggled trying to finalise my top 10 songs. I’ve actually got 3 SOTY 😂 they will change depending on my mood and I’ve also bumped a Muse song over to next year. Here goes: My 3 SOTY are: Maybe Tomorrow - Stereophonics Stockholm Syndrome - Muse Mr Brightside - The Killers I also have: Crazy In Love - Beyoncé (the 10% diva in me would’ve had that as my SOTY 😂) Clocks - Coldplay Molly’s Chambers - Kings of Leon My Immortal - Evanescence Just the Way I’m Feeling - Feeder I Believe in a Thing Called Love - The Darkness Hey Ya! - OutKast I do have a worse song though - It’s My Life - No Doubt (I mean, how very dare they cover a Talk Talk song, and not very well either 😜) That’s all folks! Hi Lou, we have a few shared choices again. Not least with Maybe Tomorrow - it was a clear winner for me this year (as I hinted last week). If it hadn’t been such a great year for rock, I would have liked to included Crazy In Love and Hey Ya! as these were easily the 2 standout songs from the mostly forgettable ocean of rap/R&B/hiphop that dominated the chart. I am still unsure about David Sylvian's Blemish album...I had him in my 1999 list with Midnight Sun, where I think he succeeds with this style (even if not for a whole album). In 2003 he tries to rival Scott Walker or Björk but somehow he sounds like a mainstream version of something that requires total commitment. I find myself listening and waiting for IT to happen , like the IT that Scott Walker has on every track...Probably it is my fault, because his artistic intention might be just that IT will not be there, no hope for IT and that is the message.

At first, this felt like it might be something of a struggle to find a top 10 from the UK charts this year, without it being almost wholly made up of songs from my favourite albums bands of this time, but there are but some major hits provide some variety. Unusually 2 number 1s make my list - a tour de force of exultant modern r&b production from Beyonce (whose video perhaps marked the first occasion that a black woman became the top crush of British teenage boys) and a scintillating piece of female led 'pop emo' from Evanescence. There's also a slice of irresistibly bonkers pop metal from The Darkness and Justin Timberlake with what I think might be the best single from an ex-boy band member ever and far and away by favourite song by British indie darlings The Libertines. Although it just missed getting my vote as Joe's choice for 2002, Go with the Flow means QOTSA make my list for a 2nd year (maybe I should check out the rest of the album because I never have!). This year's list of acts with more than one song on my long list of 53 but no appearances in my top 10 comprises The Flaming Lips, Red Hot Chili Peppers (3 songs), The Coral (3), The White Stripes (3 near misses), The Thrills, British Sea Power*, Pink, Elbow and The Kings of Leon. Crazy in Love - Beyonce Clocks - Coldplay God put a Smile on your Face - Coldplay I believe in a thing called Love - The Darkness Bring me to Life - Evanescence Time for Heroes - The Libertines Hysteria - Muse Time is running out - Muse Go with the Flow - Queens of the Stone Age Cry me a River - Justin Timberlake * Now just known as Sea Power.

just one thing... but ... the 'drift away' song i only knew from one of the greatest folk singers here in the UK - Scotland - Barbara Dickson, who even in the UK here is not really regarded as wonderful as she ought to be, but I digress, the point being... despite Jet surely being, well, they really were, 'cos I was there with a stupid brother who loved them (and, even worse, loved Maroon 5), the Greta Van Fleet of Britpop, but whatever, thank goodness for, after having to endure a lot of dreck here, not including of course 'through the wire' Jason picks The Knife. And it is the best, But then Jason throws me a curveball and a song and a band I've never listened to before that My Morning Jacket number. Do they have a relationship with Fleet Foxes? Anyway, cool to hear love for The Knife. Think you all know and maybe mentioned Fever Ray of The Knife before. Love you loves, but just one thing more ....

Do you realize Jason picked THE best song (of, of course, the 3 picked)...again, right ? ...actually I'm kinda more partial to Warren Zevons' 'Keep Me In Your Heart'...but 'Golden' is nice.
