Welcome to our favourite walk around Hayle. Hayle, as a town, is somewhat overlooked by the tourist but it has the most fabulous coastline within walking distance. It has also been marinated in history, with rival communities finally coming together as one town.
Follow us as we delve into some of the history particularly around Foundry Square, then walk out to the coast and pay a visit to a pub with a very unusual name! With lots of little anecdotes and stories, there is loads in this video to make you smile and maybe some that you didn't already know!
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RU-vid, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

My daughter's favourite part of Cornwall to stay. She decided to go to the Lizard instead this year, but Hayle is somewhere she loves. She's currently watching my grandsons on the rides at Alton Towers though at the mo (bit different from the beaches of Hayle!) so will tell her to watch this on her return! You are fast becoming The Cornish Walking Trail History Channel and as your vlogs are so much more interesting than anything on TV, it's a wonder no one has snapped you up yet!! A great evening walk. x J x

Great video again guys. I love Hayle, been going there every Summer for the past 30 years, usually stay at the Haven camp, Riviere Sands. Paradise Park is a great visit there too.

Hi Sarah and Andrew. The video about Hayle was lovely, some very interesting stories. As a child, always new we weren't far away from Penzance when we went through Hayle. I think it was maybe the first glimpse of the sea on the North coast that did it! 💖

Had the immense pleasure of visiting Hayle a couple of times a few weeks back and it was a bustling, vibrant place. Unfortunately, my visits were just fleeting, so didn't have much chance to explore properly, but the architecture and general feel for the place will ensure that I return to spend more time here. Oh! And it was nice to see that someone had named a boat after my Wife, Sarah and the Philps Pasties were amazing!!!

A fabulous evening walk around Hayle, the grizzly story surrounding the Bucket of Blood was rather chilling though, no wonder the pub was haunted! the story of the Holy Well was fascinating, the sheep jokes were amusing Guy’s, and the Cornish scenery was spectacular with some amazing blooms you captured on camera, like the beautiful photo of your faithful friend, he is so cute, he was probably thinking that’s enough stroking of walls, let’s get on with our wonderful adventures like discovering Hayle Nature Reserve with all of it’s irresistible smells of the earth and natures amazing creations, much more to a dogs liking, thanks mum! I’m no longer bored! and at last Andrew got his shot of the train 🚂 making him a happy bunny 🐰 Excellent footage as always, thanks 🙏 again Sarah & Andrew for a delightful video! Oh! didn’t ‘The Cornish Copper Mine’ get a mention in ‘Poldark’ 🤗🥀👋

Yes, and Poldark's son, Jeremy works in Hayle Foundry with Harveys I believe, developing his engine (well he does in the books i think but it is a while since i read them!).

Great video! You are correct about the rails crossing the road. From the harbour, across the bridge and then there was a level crossing there. The branch line ran up the incline, now the footpath/cycle way (where you filmed the painted man). The train line ran up and joined into the up main line. You can still see the part of the bridge where it joined in. There was then a cross over on the other side of the viaduct for the train to cross onto the down mainline. Hope this helps!

Like your review of Hayle in beautiful Cornwall , we stayed at the haven caravan park at Hayle last June and loved it the village and benches are fantastic , we have booked and going to same resort and to Hayle again end of June and beginning of July this year 2024 can't wait ❤ been in the bucket of blood pub it's around a mile from resort it's a lovely pub and will be paying it a visit again coming summer 🌞

Superb! Evening was a great time to catch that light over the sea! So many memories of Hayle,my Dad was keen on the industrial heritage of the area so I can almost hear his voice telling us about the conflict between Copperhouse & Harvey's Foundries as we drove through the town. I must get the Book Dad was fond of Clidgy. He bought some & we children marvelled at the glass like rock sweet curled up in its wrapper , the colours almost like the precious stone' Tigers eye' . What a great way to use the by products from smelting - recycling at its best!

Excellent walk! Loved the stories of dueling sluice gates and the Bucket of Blood Pub. Issuing 'script' to workers that could only be redeemed at Company stores is a horrid practice; it happened here in the U.S. as well. At first glance the scoria slag blocks looked like basalt or other volcanic rock. Happy to learn it was an early recycling practice. A lovely area; I really enjoyed the garden at the end, full of flowers and humor. I'm surprised to see palms and such growing outdoors in the U.K., but then I recall that Cornwall is about as far south as it gets. :)

A really interesting walk for us. and yes, we have a mild climate, relative to the rest of the UK. The furthest any part of Cornwall is from the sea is 15 miles I believe so the sea air gives us protection from frosty winters, allowing more tender species to thrive here - as long as they tolerate the salt laden air! Sarah :)

Thank you showing us Hayle. As children we used to stay in the chalets on the Towans . Happy memories. We often walked over towans to town centre. The chalets were basic but it was paradise to us kids . We travelled sometimes twice a year. Also once or twice we stayed in camping coaches right onSt. Ives Station. Old railway sleepers. Then there was no toilet, so we actually had the key to the station . We managed. Ofcourse the station been leveled and now is a tarmac parking place.

The sluices used to scare me as a child. There were tracks on that bridge and there was a line that ran across the road to Hayle railway station.

Another great video. The estuary view from Porthkidney around to St.Ives at that time of the evening was stunning . Here in Bristol we also have a few examples of scoria ,one of which is a castle shaped folly which is now a pub! I agree with Andrew that the figure is not anatomically correct, after all who has eyes that big!!

Hi this was an interesting video, thanks for uploading. It's a beautiful part of the country, we've stayed at Carbis Bay hotel a few times, the first being when it was still a family run hotel and they had their ginger cat behind reception - compare that to now!! World leaders and all etc😄🐱 Also loved our train trip from there to Penzance, changing at St Erth passing the very estuary you showed here - fascinating.

The Hayle harbour branch closed in the 80s after its two main industries closed, firstly the power station in 1976 then the United Octil ( motor fuel additives ) factory, shortly after as it used the power station's hot steam to produce its products... there are many photos of the branch in the 60/80s on the Cornwall Railway Society, an extremely well documented website on all local railways...

Yes, the train track used to go across the road there. Up until the late 1970s I think, I remember the big white wooden swing gates that used to come down before a train was about to cross and had to stop several times there when cycling through Hayle. I like this walk very much as well, I live in Carbis Bay still.

Miss Hayle, been visiting every year for the last 52,! Lockdown etc had prevented this for a few years so this is lovely. I feel like I'm home. Must visit soon. You are very lucky to live in such a lovely part of the country.

Scoria also Scorrier . It means cinders , can be volcanic or man made . The village of Scorrier is near St Day just along the road from Redruth in another intensive mining area . Also refers to mining waste as early as the 14th Century. A fantastic building material which demonstrates an elegant use of waste material. Have to mention the best pasties in Cornwall for as long as I can remember are from Philps , Foundary Hill , Hayle . Rich and buttery , delicious.......

The slag blocks are exceptionally heavy for their size containing large amounts of metal, in places copper can be seen oozing from them. The blocks weigh approximately one hundred weight per square foot. I built my first house in penpol avenue and lived there until 1993, having to remove some of these blocks from below ground .

Hi Sarah and Andrew … so sweet of you both having lunch over that beautiful hill top on that cute bench, the scenery must of been amazing…”the bucket of blood” it’s also featured in an old Bob Hope movie of a pirates town pub! Not sure if same bucket hehe 😉 Hilarious movie! The church is stunning, the black arch door is beautiful…and ancient tombstones! Re railway lines in Hayle. I first visited Hayle in September 1976, I camped in the gardens of a bungalow that backs onto the Towans. I remeber the old raliway lines that came up the side of the river/inlet where there was some kind of works, quite industrial. A line crossed the iron bridge and went over the road passing inland between buildings on the other side. I seem to remeber looking at an old Ordenance survey map and the line eventualy joined up to the main line I think. The remnants of this railway remained for some years after that. I seem to remeber that the detrious from Hayles days when industry flurished was everywhere and it was quite run down then. Cornwall still felt a land apart in those days.

Hayle had a coal fired power station on North Quay beneath the Riviere Towans. The coal was brought by ship from South Wales and off loaded on the Quayside.

Well, your question made us google 'Scorrier' and it is derived from Scoria, latin for mine waste. So I guess that is how you pronounce it, and I have definitely heard Scorrier a few times in my life! Sarah :)

The home of my childhood and I lived there for a while as an adult. We used to go to the Weir beach opposite Lelant Quay, it was perfect for children. Have you done the Rope walk around the Mill pond in Foundry? I used to like walking my children around there when they were little.

Hi Both Yes there was a railway and went to the power station, I can still remember when the swing bridge that the rails are on used to open. If you want to see more of the ‘foundry stone’ the wall around Leland church is made of that.

I would love to see you investigate the magnificent wooden sculpture in the car park of Dobbies in Lelant. No body seems to know anything about it, and it is very neglected and there is no plaque to say who the artist was. It is a sculpture of St James the Greater, and it must have been intended to mark the beginning of the Pilgrim Way that people used to journey to Santiago. Even the friends of the Pilgrim Way seem uninterested. Please go and have a look.

The days of having a relaxing spring/summer vacation in Cornwall are now long gone. The small county is simply unable to cope with the mass influx of visitors. The reality is the very bleak housing situation and economy. The majority of Cornish people are unable to afford the ludicrously high house prices and rentals. All nice and tranquil on the walking trails!!
