I agree, but I feel a lot of people project things onto me when I run away from them. I'm very new to solo slooping, so when I see a brig I unfurl my sail and sail away. I don't try to be a coward, I'm just trying to get a scope of what to do because I've effectively been ambushed. It really ticks me off when someone who doesn't even know my intentions calls me a coward and to "get better" when I'm a solo slooper fighting a 3-man brigantine.
Hey Matthew, I get what you are saying. As a solo player you just need to be more careful. And running or assessing the situation is totally fine. 👍🏼🏴☠
I pulled up on a sloop who just finished a FoF chased them for a little bit and stopped 5 boarding attempts. Then they rode in the red sea and I followed taking a few holes of damage from the red sea. I left and so did they, then they shot all their flares and light their boat on fire and sunk. Giving me the whole FoF
I recently had a Brig run to the shores of gold and hide the fof key inside of a puzzle room and we didn’t have the specific check point so they got away with “red seaing” the key to the loot. I have come to the realization that scared little rats will always find a way to be a scared little rats
As a solo I whole heartily agree what you said about it being a harder way to play. It in most cases is self imposed so you can’t complain about it that way. The Red Sea was made for the gameplay reason of the world is not infinite and the a lore reason to explain it, not made for people to “punish” players wanting pvp. I get frustrated when I get clapped by a brig or galleon, but I always say gg and move on.
I am the same I always solo because none of mine friends play SoT but I never run and always say GG and really enjoy the game: I have 750 hours and just started playing before pirates life
Frankly the long chases usually just punish everyone, it's not something that benefits captains with no confidence in their pvp skills. It's time wasted.
I suppose my take on this is that... I get it. It's insult to injury to be sunk and have my treasure stolen only for the came to indirectly mock me by giving me progress on "Donate treasure to other pirates". Like mocking me by telling me exactly when they're putting my loot, oh sorry, not my loot, but the loot that used to be on my ship, onto theirs. I absolutely understand the idea that I worked for those chests, I solved the riddles and dug the chests up but I don't get to earn the rewards of my efforts. I'd much sooner burn it than to let someone else have it after ruining my fun. But I also understand that's a part of the allure of the game. Perhaps if the marketing of the game gave a better idea of what people are in for aside from just the adventure of the seas and gold to be had. Though, ultimately, that doesn't matter to me anymore. I won't be playing again. Lots of people, I imagine, prosper in this sort of pressure and gameplay but I don't. Not for me.
I think the marketing aspect is a very valid point. When the game came out it was very more pvp focussed and was one of the selling points for the game. Now that element gets promoted less while it's still a core part it. Sad to see a player go but it's indeed not for everyone. 🏴☠
I love Pleys Red Sea video, it’s how I found his channel and that comment section was an absolute hell hole of people disagreeing with the video or defending Red Sea.
"Piracy in a pirate game." Pirates almost never attacked eachother. The few times they did were very restrained. It was to establish territory in a 'stay away from my turf' way. If anything, players who tell you to leave are better pirates than you are. If someone isn't interested in dealing with you and chooses to say that by dumping their loot in the red sea so you get the message, it's your choice to continue to deal with that. They won't give you the satisfaction, so stop trying, find someone who WANTS to go down swinging. You can play the game how you want and so can they. Your attitude towards people using what little power they still have to tell you they don't want to deal with your playstyle is a pretty clear sign that you specifically are why people don't like pvp, not the pvp itself.
I have roughly 670 hours in the game and I would say at least 500 of those hours were playing solo. It's 100% a disadvantage but I know what I'm getting into by playing it. Often my voyages do end in a Brig pulling up and sinking me because I'm outnumbered, but that's the game. I'm not going to cry over stolen loot in a game literally called Sea of THIEVES. I will run, more than I will fight because I see very little chance of winning solo against ships larger than a sloop. There are mechanics in the game designed to benefit that playstyle such as the sloop being the fastest headwind ship. Then I can attempt to gain distance and sell or drop off my boat and anchor them. I play the cards I have, and they make the choice to persue me or leave me be. It's all fair game. The one thing I have never, and would never do (if they hadn't removed it) is sail into the red sea. When I'm in danger I have 2 options: run to save my loot, or fight to protect it at the risk of losing it all. Why on Earth anyone would pick the 3rd option, run to defenitely lose it all, is beyond me. It's just petty for no reason. Like breaking the Xbox controller instead of giving your sibling a turn. There's no justification other than if this particular crew has been toxic and harassing you (which is not the same thing as trying to sink and rob you). Now in Season 9, it's become more easy to solo sloop because of the World event scaling and harpoon + selling QOL improvements, so now I spend less time gathering the loot, meaning there's less time for anyone to attempt to take it from me. Obviously I don't need to explain all this to you, but this stupid red sea apologist made me want to rant.
@@captainblubber haha yeah a bit late but the point still stands. I am happy to say though, since this comment, I'm now at 1000 hours, and just recently got Ghost curse, and all that hourglass has made me 20 times more confident to take fights even against bigger ships and I usually win them. So if that means anything, it's that red sea running was even more stupid and pointless than I originally described in this comment, because even the little guy solo sloop can take down big crews with enough practise.
Look, i agree with everything you said, exept one thing... I'm solo cus i don't have friends to play with, and don't know how to make friends 😭, yet i don't cry over red sea, i fight for my loot, and if i'm not skilled enough to win, i just say: gg good fight, and move on Help me i'm very lonely
You both have fair points, however it's not this simple regarding the solo players, or the small ship players. Not everyone has their friends on SoT, and let's agree that open crew is gambling in the first place. One could say that "then you can join content creator communities", and you'd be right - even though there is still a chance of finding trolls/toxic players. Therefore, many solo/sloop players indeed haven't chosen the hard way because they wanted to, they chose it because that's what they have.
Bit late to reply but yeah, I agree it's not simple for solo players. Playing the game solo is 100% the right way to play the game but it will also be harder. And if you adjust your tactics to be more avoiding than that is only just natural.
I usually (almost always) have to run away from every player ship that tries to fight me because I'm just that bad. I have the right to do so; But running into the red sea to try to deny the people loot is just a scummy move.
You definitely have the right to run, and it can be the best tactic sometimes. But here’s the other side to it; we were all bad starting out. Taking on fights will help you learn and improve the skills to defend yourself. Not only that, just because someone attacks you doesn’t mean they’re “good”. You might even surprise yourself with battles you win.
It's insanely easy to get good at this game, and THAT'S what bothers me. People care too much about virtual gold to play virtual dress up and they let their ego's get in the way of a video game. You'll always be bad at fighting, unless you fight.. you have to be okay with losing a decent amount of loot trying to defend it until you're food enough to do so. A little struggle & grind will pay off big time over a few days/weeks/months
@@Lurch-11 I tried to take a Galleon fight with my family yesterday. Our naval was OK, with me hitting like 70% of my shots or so. However, we got boarded eventually...this caused an instant sink despite them being not that great with their cannon shots (we got hit like 4 times from their cannonball spam). I tried fighting several people during that session...but usually, they just weren't interested and I don't have the heart to kill innocents usually, so getting better at the game is difficult.
I just used B-roll footage over a discussion I hardly participated in. But I'm glad you are happy! The entire podcast will release later this week! 👍🏼😄
@@captainblubber I still enjoyed it! the topic was interesting and also everyone's thoughts. Definitely different from your other videos but I didn't know it was from the podcast ill keep my eyes open for the new episode. 👀😁🦛
Unpopular opinion: I barely have time to play in my day to day. If i spent ahitload of time trying to get loot, and you try to waste that time with PvP, I will 100% make you waste all your time too. Fair play. You troll me, i troll you. I could care less if you want the loot or not, i know how boring it is to follow a ship around for 2 hours and never catch them 😂
Can't say I've ever done the red sea thing myself but I can't really see a problem with it. I think it's possibly too much to say that they're being unfair or cheating the game when it's literally a game about piracy. Can't imagine jack sparrow would ever been a good sportsman. Yesterday was chased by a galleon for 50 mins and I only had a couple chests, tried telling them a couple times that I literally have nothing and they would be better off looking elsewhere since I didn't even have an emissary. They had seen my ship after boarding and knew I had nothing yet continued to chase. flipped the chessboard at the end by dumping my loot on a rowboat and hiding it behind a rock and then sailed away. I led them around for another ten mins and ngl I was pretty happy with the idea that went they caught up and killed me they had nothing to show for it Edit: I comment this respectfully btw, your points r very valid from the perspective of a good player, however I'm not very good and I find that I'm bettered by every crew rather than just the one off you guys had at reapers, hence finding it fitting to 'punish' overly aggressive players that purely kill for sport.
Bit late to reply and thanks for leaving such an extensive comment. The way you describe is really annoying but still very viable. The other crew also has a choice in stopping to follow you and they didn't. There is nothing wrong with running away, It's just running away in the red sea should not result in the loot being gone. Hiding it on a rowboat is the pirate thing to do. Good for you! 🏴☠
@@captainblubber thank you for your reply sir, actually seeing this pop us has reminded me i should get back onto sea of thieves again, its been a while since starfield came out and sucked up all of my attention, many thanks for the reminder to check in on great games.
for me, red sea only became a tactic when the crew chasing me makes it known they are upset that I'm running, because then I'd KNOW it upsets them, I'm not mad about the change though, I understand it's poor sportsmanlike and while not being able to flip the game board on the occasion I'd want to is slightly dissapointing, it came up so rarely I'd hardly consider losing the tactic anything significant when you can just lead them around until you get bored and scuttle before they get to do any meaningful damage robbing them of both time and the catharsis of earning the sink
Yeah, I have been in those situations myself were I was purposely wasting someones time because they used some harsh language. But only when it was also fun for me. Nowadays I usually call in support from my crew to duo sink them. Works pretty well.
Agree Agree Agree Agree. I hate these sort of players, many a time I've been solo and found that people are more suprised when I turn to fight instead of run, like ye surprisingly a good portion of solo players want to play a pirate game, not Table flipping simulator. It's just those few that have to try ruin the experience Although nowdays, it is glorious to see someone red sea who didn't know about that change I've only experienced it twice but mwah, might be my new best feeling.
Twice is still more than I have in the last three years. I'm obviously happy with the change but I don't really bother anymore with long chases. Either way, thanks for listening to our rambles.
Yeah running to the red sea is annoying but I think if you let someone get to the red sea you already have a bigger problem if you chase someone that far just kinda wasting everyone's time I willing to bet you could found better pvp on your server but I also don't really care about the pvp I just like taking there loot so Whether I sink them or the environment does I still get the loot and that's a win in my book
Funny how there is always people like you who believe you're entitled to other people's loot but also believe they're not allowed to get away from you unless it's by your rules At what point do they get to declare a victory? How many kills must they get? Players shouldn't be expected to fight you off indefinitely until you win, that's entirely one sided Absolute L mentality
Yeah, totally agree. Getting away with loot without fighting is a very pirate thing to do. I do it all the time. Sorry you got that impression from listening to this small segment of our podcast. Please keep in mind this is three people (with different opinions) talking unfiltered but I think we all agree with this. It's just that red sea running with loot was never intended to be one of those tactics and the devs agreed and made this change. We are just happy with that.
I've always thought it was super lame for anyone to be bothered with red sea sailing. It's not "flipping the board", coz sinking their ship, doesn't sink mine. I get to turn around and keep sailing. It's up to me to catch them before they get to the red sea. If I can't do that, maybe I need to get better at the game too. Stop blaming others and see if you can get better at the game yourself. That's where it's fun for me.
Tbh I don't care about red sea runners, it was just part of the game. Taking it away now was obviously going to upset some players. The stuff dropped after a 30+ minute chase will rarely be worth it, so I don't see why it really matters. IMO they could have just left it alone, it's been 5 years after all. It would make more sense to me if the ones chasing could send over a rowboat or swimmers to retrieve the loot, if it just pops up outside the red sea boundary then it's kind of immersion breaking.
That's a fair point. I guess older sea dogs have learned to not bother with it anymore. Still I think it's good for new players. Until I hear otherwise I will pretend some mermaid brought the loot for me.
@@captainblubber I feel it's more like it's just the devil's shroud spitting the loot back out, because of how the shroud is often described as living and breathing because of how it shifts and moves, lol
Red sea running is cowardly, and complaining about people being better than you is silly, but comparing that tactic to ddosing COD servers is next level idiotic. DDOSing a fps server is like... ddosing a SoT server.
