Our first DRIVE in an original '70 CHEVELLE 454 LS6

We are fortunate to have access to this original 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6. Since Trevor is just starting to dip his toes in the world of muscle cars, I seized the opportunity to show him what a finished Chevelle is like and some of the differences that the SS option has in comparison to his Malibu trim level. I see the irony, though; this LS6 Chevelle is the complete opposite of his rusted-out 1972 Malibu, not only in rarity and performance but also in its condition!
But more importantly, I want him to start learning the difference in genre between a completely stock muscle car and more of a hot-rodded muscle car. This exposure will help develop his taste in cars. It can inspire him on how he would like to build his Chevelle. I can show him the difference in builds from the LS6 Chevelle to a modified 67 Nova. We can let him experience both of these cars and see what he likes and dislikes about each one.
This LS6 Chevelle came into our family a few years ago but had been abandoned in storage for over 20 years. The Chevelle was restored sometime in the 90s. However, due to it being off the road for so long, it needed a fair amount of work to get back into driveable condition. Because of this work, this was our first opportunity to get it out on the road. It's winter here and not an ideal time to have the car out, so we kept the drive short and sweet. However, it was enough to give Trevor a tase. I hope we get his Malibu over to the LS6 this summer and offer him a real-life comparison between the two!

About AutoTechNick:
Growing up in rural Oregon, I was always around Hot Rods & Race Cars. I imagine my early exposure to this culture ignited a spark of interest in cars, which remains my passion.
🎓 I am a proud Alumni of Wyoming Technical Institute @WyoTechAutoMechanicSchool where I studied Automotive Technology, Performance Engine Building & Street Rod Fabrication. In addition to "WyoTech," I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the "Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards" for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the "Top Ferrari Technician in the World!"
🚀 As my time with Ferrari came to an end, a new career path awaited me…. Aerospace. I am currently working at Blue Origin, helping to build & develop the BE-3PM and BE-3U rocket engines.
With my new career path, I needed an outlet for my automotive passion, thus the reason for this channel…

I am not going to lie. I am pretty impressed that he favors the stock and original Chevelle over the in-your-face Nova. Out of the two, what is your preference? I like the rarity and coolness of the Chevelle, but man, it is hard to beat a mean-sounding hot rod like the Nova!! ~ Nick

I'd love to have a 70 SS . First car was a 72 four door. I'd be happy with a Malibu cloned to look like a SS as it would almost be affordable to get.

I totally appreciated that most awesome blast to the past! I would of been as giddy as a school girl in that beautiful SS 454 Chevelle. My first car I saved and bought was a 1971 SS 454 Chevelle. It was jet black with white stripes. Turbo 400 automatic. Black interior, bucket seats, Thank you for taking me back to 1979!🙂👍

Yeah, it’s really hit or miss. Somedays he is super into it, and others he’s very reserved. Like you said, not unusual for a young teen. The LS6 featured square port heads which flows more air at high rpms plus a solid lifter cam. These two differences in engineering gave it the higher hp output but also made it a bit more temperamental than the more basic 4 bolt main big block with hydraulic lifters and forged crank.

Id do a more modern 6 speed just for comfort on ghe highway. Thats whats cool now adays is you can add some good new stuff, a t56 magnum and a good oil and tranny cooler. Good stuff. If you had a 6 speed you could go with 3.55 gears and it would have a real sweet spot in 3rd and 4th gear, a very very usable sweet spot.
