You need a vision This cabin could have a lot of potential. Take wallboards out, put new walls and flooring in. Use mildew resistant paint when you do your painting. Put new flooring etc, it's go s really cute design from the outside. .

8 tracks were very popular in the 60's/early 70's and I love Cat Stevens. That brought back memories for me. He was very Hippie Dippy, back in the day. You guys have a beautiful property. I can't wait to see it in the Spring/Summer time!

Hey there, i wanted to comment on the 8 track. Cat Stephens converted to Islam and dropped off the face of the earth for awhile. There are lots of classic car owner people that put 8 tracks in their cars to be able to play those old tapes. Hope you find a use for them or can sell them. The old radio is worth doing some research on, but the vacuum tubes can be worth 100s of dollars since they are rare and necessary for making these old units work again. Good luck figuring out what to do with the cabin.@@GoodLivingAlaska

If you had that radio here where I live, I'd fix it for you. I even have knobs for it. Bit I guess we're about 2,000 miles south of you or even more. The big can in the bottom was a special antenna that would allow you to pick up stations from far away without an outdoor antenna. I suspect it was an amplified antenna also. Your cassettes are actually 8-track tapes. They were popular just before the audio cassette came out. We still have a stereo system with an 8-track, but don't use the 8-track. No, I'm not that old, but my Dad had a Radio-TV repair shop where I learned about these things.

That radio takes me back to my childhood. The glow from the dial was so comforting. I used to sit in front of it with my brother, ear close to the speaker, listening to see if our school would be closed because of snow! Such good memories. Also, use to listen to Cat stevens all the time. You may find a collector that would be interested in them but, I wouldn't expect much. Great finds.

Just did a quick internet search of that radio (which is very cool by the way). I found something that looks just like it. It’s a 1942 art deco style floor radio. Anything art deco is very attractive to people, so I’m guessing you could get a pretty penny for it.

@@GoodLivingAlaskaI used to watch my grandfather mend radios like that back in the 1950s and 1960s. It looks to me like you have a complete radio there. The tubes (those metal cylinders sticking up) may no longer work, but I noticed they have their serial numbers intact. There are specialist retailers who can supply those via the mail. If you take the model number and search online you can find the repair manual to show you how to replace the wiring and tubes. With a bit of research and work, you should be able to get it working. No special tools needed, just flat-head screw drivers and a fine guage soldering iron.

I have been restoring antique radios for the past 50 years. That is a General Electric console from about 1940. At this time, on the console models, pushbuttons, internal antennas, and large HiFi speakers were new and popular. DON'T TURN THE RADIO ON AS IS! Doing so will damage the power transformer, rectifier and audio output tube, speaker field coil, and audio output transformer. The problem with these old radios is, the electrolytic and paper capacitors go bad and it basically shorts out the radio power supply. The barrel shaped thing in the back of the radio is the antenna, it should be mounted vertically to an upper and lower shaft that extends from the antenna drum. In use, you can rotate the drum to minimize power line interference. Most parts, or suitable replacements are available for these old radios (except for the transformers). Console radios are not as popular to collectors due to their larger size, even though they are a more premium radio. Smaller table top radios are currently the most popular. As is, the radio is worth about $50. Fully electrically restored, along with a cabinet restoration, with the correct knobs, the radio would be worth about $350.

Our old camper/bus conversion had an 8 track tape player. Some of the 8 track tapes are worth a bit, some not so much. But they are different from regular cassette tapes. Look them up online and see if any of them are worth anything. You have a lot of work to do there, but it is an awesome place. I must say I would love to have a place like yours in Alaska. Great video again. Have a blessed week.

Love the floor console radio! That's an art deco style. It became less popular after WW2. This one was probably made in the late 30's to early 40's. MY grandpa has his own tv/radio/stereo repair shop. He loved working on those old tube consoles. The missing knobs are super hard to find. I noticed a yellowed piece of paper on the upper left corner when you turned it around. It should have a model number on it. It maybe GE Model L -915W.

Eight track tapes came out in the mid70s. Cassette tapes came out long before that. The selling point for the eight track tape was that it ran in a continuous loop and you never had to rewind it. They were great to listen to, but they were infamous for becoming tangled up and ruined. As for any technology gone by the wayside there is a small group of collectors out there. Cat Stevens, tea for the Tillerman… I have on vinyl and CD. Epic album you should check out.

I grew up with 8 track tapes. A family of 9, big old station wagon and beach boys playing on the 8 track as we drive over the hill to Santa Cruz Beach thru our summers. I don’t know about your particular radio but my late husband use to buy the smaller SOlid State radios and tinker with until they worked. It was often just a blown fuse. There’s something about listening to those old SS radios. Be safe and stay warm.

Gosh! You are one brave man! I was nervous watching you on the ladder but, upstairs was freaking me out! The land is valuable and, you can think about whether you want to tear it down and rebuild, while it is wintery. It's a project, anyways. Living up there will be wonderful on weekends. You are such an explorer. I was laughing when you found the old radio. What guy wouldn't be! Another project! Having fun? Mocha is happy to come along. Good thing you remembered your snowblower. The Airstream is a good asset. Good luck on the tree cutting! I gotta keep watching.😅 VHS cassette!

Thank you for sharing your adventures in looking through the stuff on your new property. It's always fun exploring. Your property is beautiful. You could do so much with it for your family. I'm thinking log cabin two story but that's your dream to what you want to put on it. Have fun and enjoy it all. Your young and full of energy to do a lot. The old radio is nice but not worth much these days. Here I see them being offered around $40 or so not working. It would make a nice piece of furniture to turn into something usuable.

The zip-loc bag in the Airstream was coax cable for a CB radio ball mount. It has 2 eyelets on 1 end and a PL-259 connector on the other to screw onto the back of a CB radio, or ham radio.

That big upright radio is an old tube AM radio. Not worth a ton of money but you could sell that to someone who restores them. Might be a little tough to find in Alaska, though. Obviously may not even work, given the abandoned nature of that place. It looks all original, though never seen anything like that big cylinder thing at the bottom in the back. I did notice the electrical cord was the original 2-prong style, which should be replaced if you were to end up using it. As-is, it's a fire hazard, you really want a grounded 3 wire cord for safety. I used to have one really similar to that, I recognized it immediately when you opened the door. Mine was by "Motorola", my dad used to listen to it as a kid (Flash Gordon, Lone Ranger type of radio serials). I ended up selling it to someone who restores them. It was cool decoration and an interesting conversation piece, but I'm of the opinion it should be restored and actually used/enjoyed by someone who is into them. There is a market for restored/working radios like that. Those "cassettes" you found are 8-tracks. I used to go out to my dad's truck and listen to ABBA on 8-track. This was back in the 70s.

Definitely put money into the Airstream . Defintely, dont put money into that cabin. It just looks moldy, poorly built, and a fire hazard. I suppose a water tank would be the way to there. That water looks deadly. The property itself is picturesque and will provide a nice home for a cozy little cabin, especially around Christmas.

The old radio is 1940's ish vintage and the can in it is the antennae. The old radios like that had to have an external antennae in order to realize it's best reception. That appears to be an early attempt at keeping it all contained within the cabinet and not have to run wires outside to an antennae. We had one similar to that when I was growing up made by Sears and it sounded fantastic. All tubes of course since there were no commercial transistors at that point. That would come another ten years or so down the line. If you can get it to work it will surprise you how good it will sound on stations that are reasonably close by. The tuning was not as precise on those old sets as todays, but for the stronger stations they just sounded great.

Another awesome video. must be very cold. It is very hot here in Penrith. It is has been above 35°C= 95°F. We had a temperature of 42°C= 107.6°F two days ago. We have our air conditioners on. I do not enjoy Australian Summer. I am blessed that we have the air conditioners. I am not sure what to think about the cabin. It looks old and shabby, not safe. If it was me, I would tear it down and build a better cabin. My thoughts only. I support you no matter what you both decide. The airstream has a lot of potential. Thank you for sharing. Love and Blessings to you all. ❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏 Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘

I believe the round thing in the bottom of the radio is an antenna. No way to know if it will work except to try it. It will take a while for it to warm up and turn on if it works. Don't plug it in until you replace the knobs. Those old radios fed power to the metal chassis when they were plugged in. This was before the days when plugs were polarized so the chassis could be connected to the hot side of the line or the ground side depending on which side of the plug is up. No way to know so you need some sort of knob that don't conduct to electricity. This also means that the metal in the back of the radio could give you a shock if you touch it when the radio is plugged in. Those tapes are 8 track tapes popular in the late1960s or early 1970's. They tended to stretch and brake so there were unreliable. They also had tracking accuracy issues causing cross talk. They were replaced by compact cassettes in the mid 1970's as noise reduction improved because they were more reliable.
